Interview & Giveaway with Amanda Bonilla

Book Monster Reviews & LITERAL ADDICTION are happy to welcome author Amanda Bonilla to our sites today.

Amanda Bonilla lives in rural Idaho with her husband and two kids. She’s a part-time pet wrangler, a full-time sun worshipper, and only goes out into the cold when coerced. She loves the outdoors, black clothes, pink appliances and thinks junk food should be a recognized food group. In the summer, she can be found sitting by the lake, enjoying the view from her dock.

Amanda is the creator of the urban fantasy series SHAEDE ASSASSIN and the paranormal romance (eBook shorts) series SEXY SHIFTERS.

Today we are helping Amanda promote the newest release in her SHAEDE ASSASSIN series, "Crave the Darkness" which was just released on March 5, 2013.  Amanda also released a new addition to her SEXY SHIFTERS series in February, and we'll be checking that out too.  If you are not familiar with both these incredible series, fear not!  We have posted the synopses below for you to check out…

We know, you're hooked already! I know our bank accounts just dropped lower after grabbing up these books. ;-)

Before you run off to buy your copies, check our interview with Amanda  so we can learn more about the incredible author behind the books and what she has coming up next…

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hi Amanda!  Welcome to Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION!   We’re very excited to have you with us today!

Amanda: Thanks so much for having me as a guest! It’s great to be here! J

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  We always like to start out by getting to know our guest authors a little bit better.
Q1):   Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we can't find out on the internet, in your bio, etc?

Amanda: I LOVE chocolate/banana/peanut butter smoothies, I’m terrified of spiders (even small ones!), and I usually spend the entire month of September canning fruits and veggies. The hubs and I are on a self-sustainability kick.

Q2)  As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Amanda: An actress. I’ve always had a dramatic personality, but since I’m kind of an introvert, I doubt I’d have been very successful. And then later, I wanted to be a marine biologist. I’m a big time animal lover and I like the water. But on the flipside, the thought of taking biology classes soured my stomach so I had to put that dream on the back burner. ;)

Q3)  What are some of your hobbies, or things that you enjoy when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?

Amanda: I enjoy being outdoors. Summer is my favorite season. I hike, work in the garden, and hang out at the lake. If I could, I’d spend every day on a beach. Our teen is a soccer player, so our fall is usually focused on traveling to games. I’m a hardcore sports lover and I’m totally okay with being called a soccer mom. In the winter, I ski every once in a while, though I’m not much of a cold weather person. I need sunshine!

Q4)  Do you have any interesting writing quirks, or things that you must have with you to begin the writing process?

Amanda: I really don’t have any writing quirks. I feel so boring! When I’m writing, I like quiet. No TV, no music, no interruptions. I’m the most productive when I go somewhere without internet or phones and just focus.

Q5)  What are some of the books in your TBR pile right now?

Amanda: My stack is growing to epic proportions. I’m trying to get through HEXED by Kevin Hearne in between writing bouts, and my must reads for the end of the month are TWICE TEMPTED by Jeaniene Frost and LOVER AT LAST by JR Ward. I’m a PNR and UF junkie. If there are supernatural creatures, I’m going to read it!

Q6)  What are the best parts of writing for you?  What are the hardest parts?

Amanda: I really love everything about writing. I enjoy the world-building, crafting a plot, and having conversations in my head with imaginary people. This is definitely my dream job! The hardest part about writing for me is time management. I have a tendency to get sucked in to what I’m writing and forget about everything else. I’ve burned many dinners and left loads of clothes unwashed. I’m sure my family gets annoyed with me, but they’re pretty good sports.

Q7)  What is the most surprising thing you have learned while writing your books?

Amanda: I think the most surprising thing I’ve learned is how much I love the editing process. I was terrified of getting notes from my editor for the first time, but once I read her notes and went through the manuscript step-by-step with her, I loved the collaboration. Editors make books and writers better!

Q8)  What traits do you feel are paramount for a hero and heroine to have?

Amanda: Loyalty, compassion, strength, and conviction. I like unapologetic heroes and heroines. Characters that do what must be done no matter the cost. I can get behind a character who’s loyal to her friends and loved ones, who has the power to forgive not only others, but herself, and has the strength to follow through once she chooses a path. I think the best heroes and heroines are well-rounded, multi-faceted characters with plenty of faults. No one is perfect. Including heroes.

Q9)  For readers who have not yet read SHAEDE ASSASSIN, can you please give us a brief synopsis of the series?

Amanda: The Shaede Assassin series follows Darian, a woman who’s spent the first eighty or so years of her supernatural existence believing she was the only one of her kind. She’s suffered through a history of abuse and mistreatment, making her a very jaded, emotionally closed off character. As a Shaede, a creature who can become a shadow once the sun sets, she becomes an assassin, who takes jobs ridding the earth of nasty, morally bankrupt people and she’s come to realize that she’s not as alone in the world as she was led to believe. As the series progresses, Darian is just trying to learn how to own up to her mistakes, open up and allow herself to love and be loved, and really just live her life. The books are heavy on action, adventure, mystery, and romance, with a splash of alpha male goodness. I tend to write darker story lines, but if you enjoy emotionally damaged, strong-willed heroines who know how to fight, I think you’ll enjoy this series!

Q7)  What you can tell us about "Crave the Darkness" your newest release in the SHAEDE ASSASSIN series?

Amanda: CRAVE THE DARKNESS is book three in the Shaede Assassin series. Darian is broken hearted after her separation from Tyler at the end of BLOOD BEFORE SUNRISE and he’s been gone for months. Xander, the Shaede King, hires Darian to protect Anya, one of Xander’s favorite subjects who happens to be pregnant which is a rarity among the Shaedes. Oh, and Darian and Anya sort of dislike each other so neither one of them is happy about the assignment. It’s a darker book than the first two, but it’s my favorite in the series so far. Darian grows a lot as a character in this book.

Q8)  How many books do you have planned for SHAEDE ASSASSIN series? When can we expect the next book?

Amanda: I currently have books four and five fully outlined for the series, but I think I could go as many as seven or eight books. The key is to wrap the series up before it gets stale. When Darian runs out of adventures and her love life is finally resolved, it’ll be time to give her a happily ever after. As far as release dates go, a schedule hasn’t been set for further books yet, but I’m hoping to update readers soon!

Q9)  What was the inspiration that lead to the concept and creation of the SHAEDE ASSASSIN series?

Amanda: I was lying in bed one morning and the concept just sort of popped into my head. The first scene of SHAEDES OF GRAY was perfectly formed in my imagination. I pictured this woman standing on the roof of a building, contemplating the decisions she’d made in her life and wondering if there was more than just gray indifference. She was waiting to meet someone about a job and just melted into the shadows. I got straight out of bed and hit the keyboard.

Q10)  What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, logistical, etc) in bringing the SHAEDE ASSASSIN series to life?

Amanda: I’ve only been to Seattle a few times, so I spend a lot of time on Google maps, researching landmarks, learning more about the city and its history. As far as the mythology goes, I couldn’t find anything in my research that resonated with me, so I made one up. It was pretty time consuming, but I wrote a history for the Shaedes as well as crafted a family tree. The Jinn mythology was tougher. Honestly, I’m still working on it and it reads a lot like an encyclopedia entry. When I’m writing fight scenes, I spend a lot of time on YouTube. Videos are really helpful when I’m crafting an action sequence.

Q11)   Can you please tell us a little about your SEXY SHIFTER series?

Amanda: The shifter series is a fun, PNR short story series that follows a pride of mountain lion shifters near Kalispell, Montana. I love the aspect of the dual nature that goes hand-in-hand with shifters and I wanted to write a few stories that were heavier on the romance as opposed the Shaedes series which is much more action oriented. Shorts are a tougher for me to write than full-length novels and I see them as scenes with mini story arcs. I left myself plenty of room to expand on them if I wanted to.

Q12)  What you can tell us about "The Sweetest Mercy", your newest release in the SEXY SHIFTER series?

Amanda: TSM completes the story arc of the first two shifter shorts, THE SWEETEST TORTURE and THE SWEETEST TEMPTATION. All three shorts feature the same antagonist, Reece Simonson, an exiled member of the pride. THE SWEETEST MERCY sees an end to his trouble making and ties up the common thread that links all three shorts together.

Q13)  What's coming up next in your SEXY SHIFTER series and when can we expect it?

Amanda: Right now, I don’t have any immediate plans for future shorts in the series, but I’m open to the possibility of continuing with the Kalispell pride and writing stories for a new set of characters, or maybe expand on the world-building, flesh it out, and write a few full-length novels for Logan, Drew, and Carter.

Q14)  Do you have projects that you're working on or any events coming up that you can share with us?

Amanda: I’ve got several projects in the works including book 4 in the Shaede Assassin series, a NA Adult urban fantasy novella, and a contemporary romance project featuring US Marshals that’s currently under consideration by my publisher. I’m enjoying the opportunity to stretch my writing muscles and explore new characters and genres. As far as events go, I’ll be attending AAD in Savannah this year from August 15th-18th. It’s my first con and I’m super excited!

Q15)  Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers or information you'd like to share while we have you here today?

Amanda: I’d like to thank my readers for taking a chance on me! With all of the books on the shelves, I’m honored when anyone picks up one of my books. Also, I love to chat with readers! Look me up on Facebook or Twitter! I’ll talk about pretty much anything. Books, goats, TV shows, food. Hit me up!

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Thank you again Amanda for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us.  We would love to have you back again to help you promote the next releases in your SHAEDE ASSASSIN & SEXY SHIFTER series.
