One of the questions I’ve been asked a couple of times about my new Sons of Wrath series is:  why demons?  So I thought I’d take the opportunity in this guest blog to answer.

I’m fascinated by angels and demons, good versus evil, and how distinctly separate the two can be.  As a mere mortal, I find this duality a little hard to grasp though– that one entity can be so good and flawless while the other can be pure evil with malicious intent.  In my mind, I’ve always had this desire to smear the two a little and give angels some imperfections and demons a conscience.  Call it a human need to seek out relatable and redeeming qualities…

When I came up with the idea of the Sons, I wanted a brotherhood of supernaturals that not only had this dangerous brutality about them and an ability to effectively carry out vengeance, but also a set of morals and an honor code amongst themselves.  In the book, they are summoned by those who’ve been wronged.  The brothers are very selective about the cases they agree to take on, and tend to gravitate toward severe circumstances that might be considered more justifiable punishment. 

What I like about them is that the inner battles they face make them much more than a bunch of mindless beasts out to corrupt human beings and lead them astray.  They’re not perfect in one way or the other—they drink and dabble in sex and drugs, suffer their own inner demons, face relationship issues and loss—just like any human being might.  I think these characteristics give them much more depth and make them easier to relate to.  Yes, they have superhuman strength and abilities, but within their own realm, these attributes are comparable to other supes, making them less pronounced—a food chain, of sorts. 

The brothers are bad boys in that they’re dark and violent when provoked or called upon, but at the same time, they’re also very protective and reverent lovers—a nice balance of evil and goodness.  They have a deep respect for women in spite of their wild sex drive.  They’re also casino bosses who dress GQ and smell good too!  A total package of sexy as hell.
