Desperate to escape agonizing memories of Christmas past, twenty-nine-year-old widow Megan Snow builds a snow family outside the mountain cabin she once shared with her husband, realizing too late that she’s recreated the very thing she’ll never have.

Called to life by Megan’s tears, snow god Owen Winters appears unconscious on her doorstep in the midst of a raging blizzard. As she nurses him to health, Owen finds unexpected solace in her company and unimagined pleasure in the warmth of her body, and vows to win her heart for a chance at humanity.

Megan is drawn to Owen’s mismatched eyes, otherworldly masculinity, and enthusiasm for the littlest things. But this Christmas miracle comes with an expiration—before the snow melts and the temperature rises, Megan must let go of her widow’s grief and learn to trust love again, or she’ll lose Owen forever.

Paranormal Romance is the Ultimate Fantasy
From Laura Kaye

I’m happy to be back at Book Monster Reviews and Literal Addiction today! Thanks to Carla & Chelle for inviting me back for a mid-winter visit! Since I’ve just finished one paranormal story (South of Surrender, releases May 28) and am in the middle of another (untitled Vampire Warrior Kings #3, releases this summer), I thought I’d talk about the lure of paranormal romance. Overall, it seems to me that paranormal romance represents the ultimate fantasy on a number of levels.

First, in paranormal romance, the human hero or heroine doesn’t just capture the attention of the captain of the football team, or her boss, or someone high in the community, the human captures the attention of an immortal creature with incredible powers. That immortal creature has lived through all time and yet one human interests them enough to change their ways, to stop and take notice. If having that kind of power and appeal isn’t the ultimate fantasy, I don’t know what is!

Second, paranormal heroes are the ultimate bad boys. Think about it. Your vampire lover could EAT you! LOL And he certainly has the power to hurt you, if he wanted. In fact, paranormal heroes have so many dangerous, animalistic, and supernatural characteristics, it takes an incredibly strong and confident woman to be their equal, and that’s part of the fantasy, too—that we could be that strong and brave.

Third, paranormal romance takes you to a different world. It’s the ultimate escape. Even when the paranormal creatures or elements are set in the human world we all know—the real world—the very existence of the paranormal changes it enough to make it someplace new. Think about J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Caldwell is set in our world, and yet the presence of the Brothers and the Lessers (and the fallen angels, for that matter) make it something total different. And learning the rules and ways of life in that new world is a great escape.

So, what do you think? What else do you think makes paranormal romance the ultimate fantasy?

Thanks for reading!
Laura Kaye

I think paranormal romance is unique and offers such a wide variety of heroes and heroines. I read everything but tend to like the paranormal because of the almost unbelievable qualities the characters can have.

I have yet to read any Laura Kaye books but really want to! This series looks fun! I love to mix up my reading so paranormals are often in the rotation. :)

Perfectly said, Marlene!!

I agree with you completely Laura. PNR has the best bad boy heroes possible. The fact they we can really enter into a different world is one of the reasons I love them. Have to get away now and then you know ;).

I have not read the BDB series but I see it pop up so often on blog posts and twitter. I think I need to read them! I do like to be swept up in a fantasy story. It really takes your mind off of the daily routines. Plus, I think what draws me to paranormal reads are the strength of the characters - physically. I would love to shift into an animal and run sometimes or be able to fly or be able to just have speed and strength of vampires.

The world building of PNR and UF can be so complex and exciting. I really enjoy seeing an author take existing mythology and putting their own twist to it for a whole new story.

I think you got it right with the paranormal heroes are the ultimate bad boys. I also like that a PNR takes your out of day to day life and into another world.

I'm a lot more willing to accept the "alpha male" in PNR than I am in contemporary romance. It's more of a fantasy!

I love the "outside the box" worlds and imagination of paranormal romance. I adore seeing where the author's imagination travels taking me along for the ride...anything can happen and usually does ;-). I read only romance with it's guaranteed HEA and I love slipping away to somewhere else :-). I've heard so much about this series, I'd love to give it a try!

I love that Paranormal gives you characters and situations that you normally wouldn't see in regular romance.

Paramormals introduce you to new worlds and different beings. The imagination of some of the authors is unbelievable. The books are great and keep me hanging on until the end. Thanks for the giveaway.

I think it is the powers - whether it is shapeshifting, magic, vampirism - it's all so fascinating and it heightens the fantasy.

Most real life rules can be broken to get the HEA.

I love the different aspects of the paranormal, you never know what's powers work or don't everything always different with each author which is amazing.

With paranormal romance, anything is possible. The love is often considered forbidden, so it also has a Romeo and Juliet quality, only on a much larger scale. This is what I think makes paranormal romance the ultimate fantasy!
