Eating Humble Pie

Holiday food, yum! Who can resist the slow cooker full of Swedish meatballs, or the peppermint goodness of baked goods we only get to enjoy during the festive season? Even cubes of cheese taste more delicious with a toothpick stuck in them and served on a tray. Food and the holidays have gone hand-in-hand since the beginning of time.

My new book, Kiss of the Betrayer, is set in medieval times and food plays a part in not only feeding my characters, but setting the feel of the scene. I’ve cringed while researching common dishes prepared back then and thought I’d share just a bit of what a person might have enjoyed during the medieval holidays.

Mince pies still exists, but carry less of a religious meaning today. Made with shredded or minced meat, the pies were baked into oblong cases that represented Jesus’s crib. Three spices were added, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, which symbolized the three gifts given by the Magi. It was considered good luck to eat a small mince pie every day during the twelve days of Christmas. I do the same thing with doughnuts.

A popular main course was goose. Now, let me interject my favorite goose story here. It was Christmas time and I lived in Barrow, Alaska at the time. One of the residents, a wonderful native lady named Juanita, invited me to her house for dinner. I opened the pot lid and dipped the large wooden spoon in the delicious smelling soup and stirred. On my second swipe the head of the goose floated to the top. I still remember the tiny little teeth smiling back at me. You know, because all the flesh had been boiled from its carcass. There were even a few tiny feathers floating in the broth. I ate very little that night.

Anyway, back to the medieval meal. While the lords and ladies ate the choicest cuts of deer meat, the peasants and servants dinned on humble pie. Humble or umble pie, was made from the heart, liver, brains—well you get the idea—of a deer. These bits of the animal were called the humbles, thus the name and the origin of eating humble pie.

Christmas pudding evolved from a medieval dish frumenty, a spicy, wheat-based dessert. Many other sweets were made as welcome treats for those arriving to celebrate the holiday within the host’s home.

Though food has evolved over the centuries, the meaning and its importance is just as prevalent in our holiday celebrations today.

Here’s wishing each of you a happy and delicious holiday season filled with the love of your family and friends. Merry Christmas!
