It’s great to be at Book Monster Reviews and Literal Addition today. A big thanks to Carla and Michelle for being gracious hostesses and inviting me back. Today I’ve brought along a couple of guests, Lisette Lavigne and Captain Daniel Hillary, the heroine and hero from my newest Regency historical romance, Miss Lavigne’s Little White Lie.

Lisette Lavigne is a native New Orleans resident traveling to England with her young brother and female cousin. Some might call it running away from her fiancĂ© and his goons in the middle of the night, but why quibble over tiny details? The only thing that matters is keeping her brother safe, and she’ll risk anything to do it.

Captain Daniel Hillary is the commander of the only ship sailing for England on the date Miss Lavigne wishes to travel. He loves the sea and a woman’s supple curves beneath him, but the two don’t mix. There are too many dangers, and past experience has shown women are not as hardy as one would expect. Still, he finds himself in a predicament when he breaks his own rule and allows Miss Lavigne and her family passage. Perhaps he’ll just have to test his hypothesis about the compatibility of a naked wench beneath him and sea travel.

Okay. Let’s bring out Miss Lavigne and Captain Hillary. (Lisette and Daniel enter with a rather large man trailing behind them. He has a long horn clutched in one hand and a pistol strapped to his side.)

SG: Captain, I see you’ve brought another guest.

Daniel: My first mate, Patch Emerson. He’s agreed to be part of our game today.

Lisette: What game? I thought we were here for moral support for Ms. Grace.

SG: Captain Hillary, didn’t you tell her what I have planned today?

Daniel (shrugs nonchalantly and grins): It may have slipped my mind.

(Lisette glances nervously between us)

SG: Don’t worry, Miss Lavigne. You don’t have to play unless you want to.

Lisette: Merci, Ms. Grace. If I could bow out…

Daniel: You’ll play.

Lisette: No, I won’t. I intend to bow out.

Daniel: No.

Lisette (chin lifting a notch): Who are you to tell me no? I said I’m stepping aside—

Daniel: No.

Lisette (hands on hips): What did I say about telling me no?

Daniel: Do you intend to scream in front of all these people? You know, it’s unbecoming to screech like a fishmonger’s wife.

(She nails him with the evil eye)

Daniel (laughing): Not that again. It doesn’t work on me, Lis.

Lisette: Nothing short of a large stick against your skull is likely to be effective.

Daniel: Are you calling me stubborn?

SG (interrupting): Perhaps this was a bad idea.

Lisette: Forgive us, Ms. Grace. I will play, but only because you are asking.

SG: Um… Okay, then. The game is called Truth or Consequences, which is an old TV show.

          (Lisette looks puzzled)

Daniel: You know the meaning of the word truth, don’t you luv?

Lisette (looking as if she might carry through with her threat of knocking him in the head): Of course I do, you infuriating man.

Daniel (smirking): Carry on, Ms. Grace.

SG: Thank you, Captain. As I was saying, Truth or Consequences is a game where you and Miss Lavigne take turns asking each other questions. If either of you give a wrong answer—

First Mate (blows sharply on the horn and we all jump): That’s how you’ll know you are wrong.

SG: I’m not sure that’s necess—

First Mate (blows it again, scaring the bejesus out of me): It’s no problem, Ms. Grace. I’m happy to help.

SG (frowning): Fine. Go stand over there then. (First Mate moves behind Lisette’s chair) Where was I? If one of you gives an incorrect answer, the person asking the question gets to dole out a consequence. Who would like to ask the first question?

          Daniel: Allow me.

Lisette: No ship questions. That would be unfair.

Daniel (flashing a wicked smile): Very well. What were you thinking before I kissed you the first time? Because the look on your face…

Lisette (blushing): On second thought, ask me about the ship.

Daniel: I thought you were going to gobble me up, luv.

Lisette (turning a deeper shade of red): May I have a different question, please?

Daniel: All right. What orders did I give you when your former betrothed caught up to us at sea?

          (Lisette mumbles)

Daniel: Pardon? I didn’t catch your answer.

Lisette (fidgeting): Um, I believe something along the lines of staying below deck.

Daniel: And did you follow my orders?

Lisette: That’s too many questions. It’s my turn now. Wh-what did I do to bring down your fever when you were ill?

Daniel: Ogling my naked body didn’t bring it down.

Lisette: Daniel! (She turns to me) He wasn’t completely bare. Just his upper half.

Daniel: But you did ogle me. Admit it.

Lisette: Sweet Mary! You’re impossible. Why did I agree to accompany you today?

Daniel: Because you’re fond of me?

Lisette (shaking her head slowly and reluctantly smiling): Lord help me, if ever I wished I could tell a lie…

Daniel (reaching for her hand then squeezing it): If we are being honest then, I may have a soft spot for you too, luv. Let’s find a quiet place. I’ve got some creative consequences in mind.

Lisette: Consequences? For what? I answered your question. But come to think of it, you avoided mine.

Daniel (winks): Then I’ll pay the consequences. My way.

Lisette: Isn’t that always the case?

(They walk off together. Daniel’s first mate trails behind, head hanging low)

SG: Well, I should have known things wouldn’t go as planned. Miss Lavigne and Captain Hillary have always been a bit difficult to control. When I was writing their love story, I never knew what they were going to say or do next. But I had a great time with this couple, and I hope readers will too.

Very funny! I love the despondent First Mate at the end!

Thank you, Victoria.

I do enjoy writing character interviews. It takes a little bit to get back into their minds since authors are usually one or two books ahead when a story is released. But it's really fun to revisit characters I've grown to love. :)

Samantha Grace said...

Thank you, Rebe! Patch is one of my favorite characters. :)

Hey Sam, Daniel is too much. Will he really answer my question or is he too busy answer with Lisette to answer a question?

Samantha Grace said...

Thank you, Filia! I love when I can make someone laugh or smile. :)

Samantha Grace said...

Melody,
I can't make any promises. You know how stubborn the captain can be, but I can give it a try. ;)

Melody May said...

Lol. Blast that stubborn Captain.

I love when the characters all come out and answer questions from the "fans". It is so much fun to hear their reactions to the questions. sdylion(at)gmail(dot)com

I love the titles of your books - and the man on the cover of miss Lavigne's Little White Lie looks like Superman :)

Paul Marron looks like Superman? Awesome! LOL

So poor Patch doesn't get to blow his horn except those two pregame times?

My fav game? Monopoly:)

Samantha Grace said...

Thank you, SdyLion!
I often feel the same way when I'm writing. It's funny how you get to know the characters like they're real. :)

Samantha Grace said...

Thank you, Jo.
One of the women at my publishing house thought he looked like Superman, too. Brandon someone??? When my husband first saw the cover, he said, "He looks like that vampire guy." He was talking about Ian Somerhalder from Vampire Diaries. Mr. Marron is quite the chameleon, I think. :)

Samantha Grace said...

Sheree,

Patch says thank you for your sympathy. He was very disappointed. ;)

Samantha Grace said...

Hi, yadkny.
I haven't played Monopoly in years. That sounds fun. Maybe we'll have to drag the board out this weekend. :)

These books sound great! My favorite game is The Great Dalmuti (a card game).

I don't play games very much, but I guess I'd choose charades or pictionary because they're always so much fun with a group.

Fun interview. I'd like to read more about the characters.

Does Patch steal the limelight from the H/H? Bet he was loads of fun to write.

Samantha Grace said...

Thanks, jmcgaugh!

I love card games, but I've never heard of The Great Dalmuti. I'll have to check it out. :)

Samantha Grace said...

Hi, Barbara!

I love charades! I think it's one of my all time favorites. :)

Samantha Grace said...

Boggle is fun, Linda. :)

It's very hard to steal the scene from Daniel. He's a force of nature. LOL

Samantha Grace said...

Thanks, Joanne.

We played a lot of Pictionary when I was growing up. Some of the drawings were hilarious! I think that's half the fun.

Samantha Grace said...

Hi, Betty!

I enjoy alpha males, too. They are probably my favorite. As a writer, I like to try out different personalities so sometimes I'll write a beta. Daniel's brother is more beta, but he's still physically strong and fearless. He's also tender and considerate of his love interest. I hope I'm able to write a hero for everyone's tastes at some point. :)

The book sounds so good, thanks for the sneak peek. My favorite game is Clue. I guess I like it because it never really is the same game twice.

Samantha Grace said...

Annwitch,
That's true. I loved playing Clue when I was younger. i'm all for a good mystery. My daughter never wanted to play the actual game. Instead, we had to be the people and make up stories.
