Interview & Giveaway with H.P. Mallory

HP Mallory Intro:

Hello everyone!  Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are very happy to welcome author H.P. Mallory to our sites today!

H.P. has a great bio on her website so we thought we’d borrow it for today’s Event:

Adventures of H.P. Mallory
H.P. MalloryI started my writing career as a self-published author and was lucky enough to hit both the Amazon and the Barnes and Noble bestseller’s lists with my two series, the Jolie Wilkins series and the Dulcie O’Neil series. Most recently I hit the USA Today list with Witchful Thinking, book 3 in the Jolie series.

I signed with Random House (Bantam imprint) to write three books in the Jolie Wilkins series (Witchful Thinking, The Witch is Back and Something Witchy This Way Comes). Now I love the fact that I’m both a traditionally published author as well as a self-published one (with my Dulcie O’Neil series).

I’m a huge fan of anything paranormal and I always have been. I get super excited whenever they have those Twilight Zone Marathon days and anything ghost or vampire related will always attract my attention.

My interests are varied but aside from writing, I’m most excited about traveling. I’m extremely fortunate to have been able to live in England and Scotland, both places really having a profound effect on my books.

As mentioned above, H.P. is the creator of two amazing series, the Jolie Wilkins and Dulcie O’Neil series.  In case you are not familiar with these series, we have posted the reading order and synopses below to help you get on track.

Dulcie O’Neil series

Book 1 - To Kill A Warlock
Book 2 - A Tale of Two Goblins
Book 3 - Great Hexpectations
Book 4 - Wuthering Frights

TO KILL A WARLOCK
DULCIE O'NEIL SERIES - Book 1

To Kill A WarlockThe murder of a dark arts warlock. A shape-shifting, ravenous creature on the loose. A devilishly handsome stranger sent to investigate. Sometimes working law enforcement for the Netherworld is a real bitch.

Dulcie O’Neil is a fairy. And not the type to frolic in gardens. She’s a Regulator—a law-enforcement agent who monitors the creatures of the Netherworld to keep them from wreaking havoc in the mortal world. When a warlock is murdered and Dulcie was the last person to see him alive, she must uncover the truth before she’s either deported back to the Netherworld, or she becomes the next victim.

Enter Knight Vander, a sinfully attractive investigator sent from the Netherworld to work the case with Dulcie. Between battling her attraction to her self-appointed partner, keeping a sadomasochistic demon in check, and fending off the advances of a sexy and powerful vampire, Dulcie’s got her hands full. As the body count increases, Dulcie finds herself battling dark magic, reconnoitering in S&M clubs and suffering the greatest of all betrayals.

WUTHERING FRIGHTS
DULCIE O'NEIL SERIES - Book 4

Wuthering Frights (Dulcie O'Neil, #4)
A father she never knew existed,
An impossible decision that had to be made,
A lie she must keep to herself at all costs,
And the realization that every choice she makes has consequences.

Fairy and law enforcement agent, Dulcie O'Neil, has just discovered that her father is the Head of the Netherworld, and a double-dealing, illegal potions importer. Worse yet, she's now working for him.

Knight Vander, Dulcie's boyfriend and Head of the Association of Netherworld Creatures, is on to her father, but, in the process, will he discover Dulcie's secret? And if he does, will it mean his life?

Jolie Wilkins series:

Book 1 - Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble
Book 2 - Toil and Trouble
Book 2.5 - Be Witched: A Jolie Wilkins/Rand Balfour Novella
Book 3 - Witchful Thinking
Book 4 - The Witch Is Back
Book 5 - Something Witchy This Way Comes

FIRE BURN AND CAULDRON BUBBLE
JOLIE WILKINS SERIES - Book 1

Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble (Jolie Wilkins, #1)Life isn't bad for psychic Jolie Wilkins. True, she doesn't have a love life to speak of, but she has a cute house in the suburbs of Los Angeles, a cat and a quirky best friend.

Enter Rand Balfour, a sinfully attractive warlock who insists she's a witch and who just might turn her life upside down. Rand hires her to help him solve a mystery regarding the death of his client who also happens to be a ghost. Jolie not only uncovers the cause of the ghost's demise but, in the process, she brings him back to life!

Word of Jolie’s incredible ability to bring back the dead spreads like wildfire, putting her at the top of the underworld’s most wanted list. Consequently, she finds herself at the center of a custody battle between a villainous witch, a dangerous but oh-so-sexy vampire, and her warlock boss, Rand.

THE WITCH IS BACK
JOLIE WILKINS SERIES - Book 4
Just released July 31, 2012

The Witch Is Back (Jolie Wilkins #4)
The witching hour has arrived in bestselling author H. P. Mallory’s captivating and sexy new novel, starring the most dazzling denizen of the undead, Jolie Wilkins.

Funny and feisty witch Jolie Wilkins is back—or rather, she’s back to her humble beginnings. Propelled into the past to her old Los Angeles fortune-telling shop, Jolie has no idea she possesses extraordinary powers, and she definitely doesn’t remember becoming Queen of the Underworld. But at least she has two incredibly sexy men vying for her affection: Rand Balfour, who looks very familiar, though Jolie can’t place his gorgeous face, and Sinjin Sinclair, who is tall, dark, and perfect . . . except for the fangs.

Yet despite her steamy love life, Jolie can’t shake the sense that something is not quite right—like she’s stuck in a déjà vu gone terribly awry. As both men race against time—and each other—to win Jolie’s heart, the fate of the Underworld hangs in the balance. And Jolie’s decision can either restore order or create an absolute, drop-dead disaster
.

SOMETHING WITCHY THIS WAY COMES
JOLIE WILKINS SERIES - Book 5
Release Date:  September 25, 2012

Something Witchy This Way Comes (Jolie Wilkins, #5)
A witch’s work is never done, and in bestselling author H. P. Mallory’s mesmerizing new novel, Jolie Wilkins finds that the real magic is only just beginning.

For smart and sexy witch Jolie Wilkins, being Queen of the Underworld is a royal pain. Back from a round of time travel, Jolie must now protect her realm from the sinister Lurkers—a powerful breed of half-humans bent on conquering the undead. And if there’s one thing she knows, it’s that the supernatural never go down without a fight.

At least Jolie has her soul mate (and finally official boyfriend), warlock Rand Balfour, by her side. Honorable, brave, and unbelievably handsome, Rand is everything Jolie wants in a man. So why can’t she forget the dangerously alluring vampire, Sinjin Sinclair? With her private life heating up and a battle boiling over, Jolie sets out to prove that in matters of love and war, the fairer hex has its own set of charms.

They sound fantastic right!?  We can personally attest to the fact that they are!!  How about we get to the interview to learn a bit more about H.P and her incredible library of literary excellence, shall we!?

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hi H.P.!  Welcome to Book Monster and LITERAL ADDICTION!  We’re very happy to have you here today.  Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us.

H.P. : Thank you so much for inviting me!

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  We always start by getting to know our guest author a little bit better.

Q1): Can you tell us 3 things about yourself – no matter how random - that we can’t find out on the Internet?

H.P. : I'm an avid gardener, I love to travel and my fav book is Pride and Prejudice

Q2):  What are 2 things that always make you smile, and 2 things that never fail to piss you off?

H.P. : My three year old son always makes me smile as do animals. Smug people irritate me and people who cut me off when I'm driving!

Q3) If you could spend the day with any of your characters, who would you want to spend it with, why, and what would you like to do?

H.P. : Sinjin, Knight and Rand. Because they are all my idea of the perfect men!

Q4):  What are some of your hobbies and/or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?

H.P. : I love to travel. That's my most favorite thing to do and other than that, lately I've been in the midst of remodeling my house which seems to have become my hobby!

Q5):  Who were some of the authors that inspired you and perhaps helped to mold you into the writer you are today?

H.P. : My all time favorite author is Jane Austen. As far as recent authors, I really enjoyed Karen Marie Moning's Fever Series and of course I love anything by Stephen King!

Q6):  What are some of your favorite TV Shows and Movies?

H.P. : TV: The Office
Movies: The Big Lebowski, Young Frankenstein, The Breakfast Club, Gone with the Wind, Emma, The BBC version of Pride and Prejudice (with Colin Firth)

Q7):  What are your favorite types of scenes to write (i.e dialogue, action, sex, etc) and why?

H.P. : Dialogue by far. I find it the easiest.

Q8):  What is a typical writing day like for you - Do you have a routine that you follow?  Are there specific things that you have to have with you to get the creative juices flowing, etc?  Do you have any unique writing quirks? Etc.

H.P. : I usually will write for a few hours in my office with my cat curled up next to me. Then I'll edit for an hour or so and then I try to get a couple hours of online marketing in.

Q9):  For readers that are new to your work, can you please tell us a little bit about the Jolie Wilkins and Dulcie O’Neil series?

H.P. : The Jolie Wilkins series is about a normal woman who realizes she's a witch and then becomes Queen of the Underworld. I just hit the New York Times bestseller's list with the last Jolie release, The Witch is Back. My Dulcie series is about a fairy in law enforcement...

Q10):  Was there any specific inspiration behind the creation of the Jolie Wilkins and Dulcie O’Neil series?

H.P. : With Jolie I wanted to create a heroine who had lots in common with the average woman out there. Someone normal in extraordinary circumstances. With Dulcie I wanted to create a heroine who appears to be very strong but has her own cross to bear...

Q11):  How many books do you have planned for both series and what's coming up next for them?

H.P. : For Jolie there are five books. But there will be a spinoff series. For Dulcie there will be 6 books so far...

Q12):  Do you have any other projects in the works that you can share with us?

H.P. : Yes. I have a new series I'm working on that will be coming out in March 2013. More to come on this soon...

Q13):  What were some of the challenges you encountered in your career thus far?

H.P. : I've really faced nothing but challenges early on. I was rejected by most of the publishing houses when I first approached them six years ago. Then I self published, hit the bestseller lists and signed with Random House. So the challenges really ended once my books started to take off!

Q14):  What about your work are you the most proud of?

H.P. : I'm the most proud of the road I've taken. The fact that I am responsible for my own success has been awesome for my sense of self.

Q15):  Is there anything special that you’d like to say to your readers (or tell us about) while we have you here today?

H.P. : Just that I appreciate each and every one of my readers and I'm very aware that the reason I've reached such success is due to everyone taking a chance on me and my books. So thank you all!

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  H.P., thank you so much again for being with us today.  We’re very happy to help you promote your entire backlist.  We really hope we turn some new readers on to your work & we’d LOVE to have you back again if you're interested.

H.P. : THank you so much and I'd definitely love to come back!!
