An Interview With Damien Tremaine

Welcome readers! I'm here at Mabon, Chicago's premiere vampire club, to interview the hero of Shadow Rising, Damien Tremaine. Let me give you a taste of what this place is like: it's crowded, full of beautiful, pale-skinned people, and the air pulses with music. Huge, ornate mirrors line the walls, and the only light comes from what must be hundreds of candles. The vamps love their candlelight. Everything here is dark, warm wood and rich fabric. I'm alone, sipping a Bloody Mary that, despite the smirk I got from the bartender, doesn't actually have any blood in it.  Damien's late, as usual, and—oh, wait, here he comes.  Tall, lean, built, with tousled light brown hair and the slight quirk of his lips that makes him look like a naughty schoolboy. He isn't a schoolboy, though.  He's an assassin, a thief, and one of the most lethal vampires to ever skulk around the periphery of the Dark Dynasties. He's also an operator.  I get a kiss on the cheek before he settles onto one of the tall stools at our little two-person table.

Damien: Don't frown at me, darling. I got caught up at the door.

Me: Caught up, or collared for being here at all?  I'm surprised you picked this place, considering you set it on fire, what, not even a year ago?

Damien: *shrugs* Anura and I have an arrangement.

Me: Yeah.  It was my understanding that the arrangement was that she'd kill you if she ever found you in here.  This club is her baby.

Damien: Yes, well, someone refused to let it rest until I made a sizeable donation to the club to—*he cringes*—make amends.

Me: I'm guessing this someone has pretty violet eyes and a few of those nasty things called morals.

Damien: *sighs* Ariane's eyes are more than pretty.  Just like the rest of her.  She's ruining my bad nature, you know.  First it's making restitution for burning down a club, and before you know it she'll have us opening a Home for Wayward Vampires.

Me: You're pretty wayward, and she lives with you, so I'd say it's already happened.

Damien: *grins* I think you're right.  I certainly keep her busy enough for twenty vampires. She's awfully fetching when she draws one of her blades on me.

Me: No doubt that happens on a regular basis.

Damien: I like to keep her on her toes.  All those dull centuries she spent in the desert...she's making up for lost time. And for some unfathomable reason, she wants me by her side while she does it.

Me: Because she loves you, genius.

Damien: And I her. *for a moment Damien's ice blue eyes soften before his gaze drops to the table*

Me: Are you...blushing?

Damien: Absolutely not.  I'm a bloody assassin.  I have a body count to rival Genghis Khan's.  I can't even remember the last thing that made me blush, though I'm sure it was completely obscene.  *his eyes narrow*  I can try to remember, if you like.  It may have involved an odd little bar I stumbled into once.  And farm animals.

Me: NO.  Fine.  You're not blushing.  Whatever.  I'm sure it's just the lighting in here.  Or something.  No stories.

Damien: *smirks*  As you wish.

Me: So since we have an interested audience, Damien, what I wanted to talk about was all that's happened to you in the last couple of months.  What would you like readers to know, going in, before they read your story?

Damien: I'm even more attractive and talented than they think.

Me: *glares*

Damien: You love me.

Me: Because I'm responsible for you.  You're still an ass.

Damien: A loveable ass.

Me: Granted.  Okay, apart from talking up your superiority in all things, what would you like to say to those about to meet you and Ariane through your story?

Damien. *blows out a breath and runs a hand through his hair*  Hmm.  I suppose they should just keep in mind that what happened really was quite an adventure.  And that underestimating pretty kittens who carry improbably large swords is a bad idea.  I learned my lesson there.

Me:  Readers shouldn't underestimate you, either.

Damien:  Darling, I like it when people underestimate me.  It makes it much easier to put a blade through their necks.

Me:  Oookay, on that note, I think we'll end the interview and let readers get to you know better on their own.  But thank you for threatening to stab people when they aren't looking.  That's always charming.

Damien: *grins*  I'd hate for anyone to think I've changed that much.  I'll see you later.  Ariane's waiting for me back at Vlad's.  I promised I'd teach her to dance.

Me: You could have brought her.  There are plenty of people on the dance floor here, and the music is good.

Damien: *quirks an eyebrow* 

Me:  Oh.  I didn't realize "dancing" was a euphemism.

Damien:  That's all right.  Neither does she.  Yet.

Damien gives me a genteel bow, a wicked grin, and then turns to vanish into the crowd.  I just shake my head.  If you haven't guessed, he's a little impossible.  But he's right...that's one of the things I love about him.
