Interview & Giveaway with Robin D. Owens

Robin D. Owens Interview Intro:

Hey there Book Monsters and Literal Addicts! Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are very pleased to welcome author Robin D. Owens to our sites today.

Robin D. Owens
Robin D. Owens has been writing longer than she cares to recall. Her fantasy/futuristic romances finally found a home at Berkley with the issuance of HeartMate in December 2001. She credits the telepathic cat with attitude in selling that book. Since then, Heart Thief was a launch book for Berkley Sensation in June 2003, Heart Duel was published in April 2004, and Heart Choice in July 2005. Her Luna Books series includes shape-shifiting fairies and average American women Summoned into another world to fight monstrous evil. The first, Guardian of Honor, came out in February 2005 and Sorceress of Faith will be out in February 2006.

Robin is the creator of the incredible CELTA'S HEARTMATE, THE SUMMONING and MYSTIC CIRCLE SERIES.  Let's take a look at the reading order in each series and a few book synopses from each series….

"Heart Mate"
CELTA'S HEARTMATES, Book 1

Heart Mate (Celta's Heartmates, #1)
All his life, Rand T’Ash has looked forward to meeting his HeartMate, with whom he could begin a family. Once a street tough, now a respected nobleman and artisan, he has crafted the perfect HeartGift, which, in the custom of the psychically gifted population of the planet Celta, is the way a man finds—and attracts his wife…

Danith Mallow is irresistibly drawn to the magnificent necklace on display in T’Ash’s shop, but she is wary of its creator, despite an overpowering attraction. In a world where everyone is defined by their psychic ability, Danith has little, placing her at the opposite end of the social spectrum from T’Ash. But T’Ash refuses to accept her rejection and sees it as a challenge instead. They are HeartMates, but can T’Ash persuade his beloved to accept her destiny by his side?

"Heart Quest"
CELTA'S HEARTMATES, Book 5

Heart Quest (Celta's Heartmates #5)

What she doesn’t know is that he has already found her. Guardsman Ilex Winterberry knows that Trif is his HeartMate, but fears that being twice her age, with a short life ahead of him, he will only scare her away. He yearns to be close to her and she needs to be close to him. There’s a killer on the loose, stalking those with unstable Flair psi power like Trif’s. Facing his most difficult task yet, Ilex must reveal the truth of their destiny or else leave Trif in the grasp of a vicious murderer...

"Heart Search"
CELTA'S HEARTMATES, Book 10

Heart Search (Celta's Heartmates #10)
Noble Laev T'Hawthorne must rebuild his life after marrying a woman he believed was his HeartMate, only to fall victim to her greed.

Abandoned at fifteen, Camellia Darjeeling values her independence above all-even as her father and uncle emotionally scourge her and extort money. For Camellia, trusting men, even her HeartMate, is too risky.

When Laev and Camellia meet, they refuse to acknowledge that they are true HeartMates. But their destiny cannot be avoided...

THE SUMMONING Series:

"Guardian Of Honor"
THE SUMMONING, Book 1

Guardian Of Honor (The Summoning, #1)With their magic boundaries falling and terrible monsters invading, the Marshalls of Lladrana must follow ancient tradition and summon a savior from the Exotique land...

For Alexa Fitzwalter, the Marshall's call pulled the savvy lawyer into a realm where she barely understood the language, let alone the intricacies of politics and power. Armed only with her wits, a mystical companion and the help of the chevalier Bastien, Alexa must use her very human mind and skills to fight the encroaching evil--and resist manipulation by the Marshalls to force her to stay in Lladrana.

Now torn between her affinity for this realm and Earth, will she return home if given the chance? Or dare she risk everything for a land not her own?

"Echoes In The Dark"
THE SUMMONING, Book 5

Echoes In The Dark (The Summoning, Book 5)The planet is dying, slowly being drained by an alien Dark, and only one last, desperate plan can save it.

Deep in another dimension, a disillusioned young singer is summoned as Lladrana's last hope. Uncertain of her future, unaware of her extraordinary magical talent, Jikata will be the sixth and final outsider--Exotique--to step through a dangerous portal of prophecy and magic. Survival will require her to forge closer friendships than she has ever known. The price of those bonds will threaten the very fate of Lladrana: a world where music holds the key to an ancient mystery--and six women will wage the ultimate battle against the forces of Dark.

MYSTIC CIRCLE Series:

"Enchanted No More"
MYSTIC CIRCLE, Book 1

Enchanted No More
As one of the last surviving Mistweavers, half-blood Jenni knows what it's like to be caught between two worlds - the faery and the human. But the time has come to choose. The Lightfolk require her unique talent for balancing the elements to fend off a dangerous enemy, and rescue her missing brother.

Only for Rothly will Jenni deal with those who destroyed her life. Only for him will she agree to work with her ex-lover, Tage, and revisit the darkest corners of her soul. For a reckoning is at hand, and she alone has the power to hold back the forces of dark.

"Enchanted Again"
MYSTIC CIRCLE, Book 2

Enchanted AgainMagic has a price—and for Amber Sarga it's days and years off her life. Each curse she breaks ages her—and the bigger the curse the bigger the cost, and not only to her. That's why she hides away and has vowed not to get involved again… That's why she hates looking in a mirror…And then an ill-fated stranger arrives. Rafe Davail doesn't believe in curses—not even knowing that in his family every first son dies young. Amber offers guidance but she won't break the curse. Still, as she grows closer to Rafe and discovers the secrets of their pasts, she wonders if for this time, this man, she should risk it all.

They all sound incredible don’t they?!  Now you you've learned more about the books, let's get to the interview so we can learn more about Robin and what she has planned for these incredible series….

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hi Robin!  Welcome to Book Monster and LITERAL ADDICTION!  Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to come by and chat with us!  We’re so happy to have you with us today!

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  We always like to start out by getting to know you a little bit better.

Q1):   Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we can't find out on the internet, in your bio, etc?

Robin:  My office is about 12 x 12 and is wall to wall books and desk.  I have a u-shaped desk with credenza and books on both sides and I've looked on the internet and, excepting Jennifer Crusie, I have the messiest desk I've seen.

I adore fantasy art.

I bought a small replica of Winged Victory after I made my first sale.

 2)  What are some other hobbies and interests you like to do when you're not writing?

Robin:  Naturally, I read a lot.  I spend time with my family, and love to travel.  And my guilty pleasure is City of Heroes.  Being ambushed and dying online can give you a real adrenaline jolt to use in the writing (that's my rationalization and I'm sticking to it).

3)  When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Robin:  Oh, I was one of those children who told stories to themselves before they went to sleep.

 4)  Do you have any interesting writing quirks or something you must have with you to start the writing process?

Robin:   Uh, I'm supposed to reveal this to zillions of people?  Not really.  I broke myself of the habit of "I must WIN three games of majong before I start" a while back.  I do like a cup of tea on my desk at all times, and I blend my own tea since there is a local shop where I buy loose leaf.

 5)  What are some of your favorite TV shows and movies?

Robin:   I've gotten hooked on Once Upon A Time, I would STILL like to know what the complete story arc of the canceled show, Flash Forward, was.  I discuss Dancing with the Stars with my friends.  As for movies, Ladyhawke, Singing in the Rain, Men in Black, X-Men, Avengers…you see a theme here?  Maybe because I played Super hero and Princess and the Dragons with my Barbie® dolls.,

 6)  What are some of the books you have in your TBR pile right now?

Robin:  Like many people, I read mostly electronic editions now, so I'll have to open up my itouch and scroll down. J   Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep; Magic Gifts, Ilona Andrews; Alice at Heart, Deborah Smith.

7)  Name one person that has always stood by you and supported you during your career?

Robin:  That would be my first writing buddy, Kay Bergstrom a/k/a Cassie Miles.

8)  If you could have one super power, what would you want it to be and why that one?

Robin:  Oh, man, teleportation for sure!  I'd love to travel the world and check out research places in the blink of an eye.

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Know we'd like to ask   you some questions about your books.

 9)  For the readers out there that are new to your books, can you please give us some more detailed information about your CELTA'S HEARTMATE series is all about?

Robin:  My tag line for the series is that it's fantasy romance set in a Celtic/Pagan society featuring telepathic animal companions with attitude (for cats, that's redundant).  It is also a "fated mate" type of series.  You can discover your HeartMate (mostly through sexy dreams when you're coming into your magic).  Finding ways to keep mates apart is a real challenge

10) How many more books do you have planned for the CELTA'S HEARTMATE series?

Robin:  Planned?  I just sold three more, so three are planned.  Ideas for, maybe five or six, but usually when a character walks onstage I begin to think about who I can match them up with…or how to kill them off.

 11)  Can you please tell us more about the MYSTIC CIRCLE series and what you have planned next for it?

Robin:  Mystic Circle is contemporary fantasy with romantic subplot, set in Denver in a magical cul de sac of nine houses (since Denver has a mixture of architectural types and sometimes right next to each other, I've put most of the circle up on pinterest).  Next up is Enchanted Ever After, coming next January…and this one deals with an average woman who has the potential to become a magical being.

I hope to sell more in the series.

 12)  What about THE SUMMONING series?  Can you tell us a little about this series and what you have planned next for it?

Robin:   The Summoning series is finished unless I decide to write a couple of stories and have them epublished (which I would definitely have to clear with my publisher first).

 13)  What has been the most surprising moment of your career so far?

Robin:  Winning some of the awards, the RITA® for sure, and the Best of the Best Daphne last year, WOW!  Though, actually, every time I get fan mail from people who say they love my books, it's a little surprising and a LOT heartwarming and motivating.

 14)  Is there a book you have written that you consider a personal favorite;  maybe one that has some sentimental value to you when it was written?

Robin:   My first published book, HeartMate, is very special.  I started writing it because my Regency historicals weren't getting published and I wanted to play around.  Of course it also has Zanth, the cat with attitude, strolling in on page three and complaining about the chef.

Guardian of Honor (the first book of the Summoning series), has an over-the-top heroine in Alexa Fitzwalter whom I always think is the real daughter of my father, who didn't mind doing over-the-top in real life.

 15)  Are there any other projects you have coming up that you'd like to share with us or anything specific you would like to say to the readers?

Robin:   Yes, I'm thinking of starting a couple of epubbed novella series.  I have a few pages of a sample/teaser here on google docs (public).

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1dE2_yiYLatX3h3c0I1V1JmM0U/edit?pli=1

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Thank you so much                             Robin for taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down and                       talk to us.  We would love to have you back again when you are ready to promote your next release.

Robin:   LOL, I'd love to come at any time.  I love writing and reading and talking about books and writing and authors and genres and…. J

Thank you for having me and for some very interesting questions.  Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again. ;)

I've read Heart Mate, winning another book would be awesome!

Robin plays mahjong? I find that quite amusing. A Virtual version or an actual one with tiles as how we do it here in Asia?

not yet but guess who just got added to the list lol

I haven't read the Enchanted books yet and I'm probably a Heart book behind by now, but I've read and adored everything else! I don't know what it was that made me pick up HeartMate when I saw it...my library had an old copy with the sci-fi looking cover. And not saying I don't read sci-fi, because I do, but it was in the romance section and I was a little confused LOL! Maybe it was the HUH? factor that made me pick it up, and YES I agree that Zanth was the "money maker" there. I've wanted to live on Celta ever since.

I used to play majong on my computer, I had to take it off. And it's only a "match game," not really the true majong.

And thanks for all the lovely comments. I am so thrilled to hear from new folk as well as loyal visitors to Celta. I do usually include a minor suspense plot, and in Heart Search (the last published), I got to kill a baddy off the way I'd wanted to for a LONG time. :)

I haven't played Majong in ages. Yes, I have read all of the Heart series and can't wait for more!

Hi, Robin - I've read every Celta book, and have almost finished Sorceress of Faith. I'm really looking forward to Enchanted No More, which I expect will be just as enthralling as your other series. I know you found inspiration for Fams from your own animal companions. Where did you find the inspiration for the Enchanted Series? But don't let me keep you from your writing... don't want to keep your readers waiting a minute longer than we must! =)

I've read every one of Robin's books and very highly recommend them! I started with the summoning books and then when I was done with them started on the Heart series (my favorite). Have read and enjoyed the Enchanted novels as well. Do you detect a theme? I love Robin's novels. My daughter has now started on the heart series and I'm working on convincing some of my friends to start reading them.

Kathleen,

The Mystic Circle series and Enchanted No More came about due to the fun neighborhood I live in and the architecture of Denver, where different styles can be in every block, so I decided to go with that.

I also wanted a more contemporary, stay in this world, series. :)

I've read all the Heart Mate books, except the latest, which I purchased is waiting for me in my TBR pile. My favorite story is Heart Duel and I would love to re-read it.

Thank you all, AGAIN! This has been such a fun list for me (well, very ego boosting and motivating, and on a day when the refrigerator quit, that was definitely prized).

I hope you've enjoyed your small time with me, if you've read my books, you've enjoyed them, or you'll at least give my work a try!

Getting myself (and cats) ready for bed now, and will check in one last time afore I retire.
