Interview and Contest with Dani Harper

Dani Harper Interview Intro:

Hello Book Monsters and Literal Addicts! Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are very pleased to welcome author Dani Harper to our sites today.

Dani Harper is a newspaper editor turned paranormal author. There isn't anything she likes better than exploring the supernatural -- unless it's writing sizzling and suspenseful romance. Of course, all of her stories have at least one foot in the netherworld.

A Canadian who spent many years in northern Alberta, Dani now lives on an island in southeast Alaska! She and her husband operate a commercial fishing boat, and her stories are written on land or at sea, with the help of her executive secretary, Fiona the Pug.

Dani is the creator of the hot shapeshifter series, CHANGELING, which is published by Kensington Brava. The series currently consists of three books; Changeling Moon, Changeling Dream and Changeling Dawn.

In case you are not familiar with this series, we've posted the synopses to each book below.

Changeling Moon
CHANGELING series, Book 1

He roams the moonlit wilderness, his every sense and instinct on high alert. Changeling wolf Connor Macleod and his Pack have never feared anything — until the night human Zoey Tyler barely escapes a rogue werewolf’s vicious attack.

As the full moon approaches, Zoey has no idea of the changes that are coming, and only Connor can show her what she is, and help her master the wildness inside.  With her initiation into the Pack just days away and a terrifying predator on the loose, the tentative bonds of trust and tenderness are their only weapons against a force red in tooth, claw … and ultimate evil.

Changeling Dream
CHANGELING series, Book 2

In times of stress Jillian Descharme has always found calm in her dream of a great white wolf with haunting blue eyes.  But she is startled when the visions return and this time seem so real. Late at night he comes to her, speaks to her, touches her.

Thirty years ago James Macleod lost his wife and unborn child to a killer bent on destroying the Changelings. Though he longed for death, his animal instinct fought for survival and James has been a wolf ever since.  Yet now a woman has reawakened the man in him, taming wild instincts but arousing still wilder needs.  With his ancient enemy hunting the legendary white wolf, James must fight for new life, new hope, new love.

Changeling Dawn
CHANGELING series, Book 3

RUNShadow and moonlight merge beneath her bare feet, the forest floor blurring as she flees the dogs and torches. Werewolf, monster -- those are the names given her kind by the humans who hate them.HUNT
Kenzie Macleod has spent her whole life hiding what she is, and she’s not about to open up to any man, even one as powerfully attractive as wildlife expert Josh Talarkoteen. But legend says that a Changeling cannot escape the call of her true mate, even in the wilderness of backcountry Alaska.
An isolated archeological site, a terrified Changeling cub, a secretive research center -- as Kenzie and Josh face the ultimate betrayal, his obsidian eyes promise untold pleasure and hint at dark secrets of his own.

They sound incredible don't they!?  Before you run off to buy them or add them to your TBR list, let's get started on the interview so we can learn more about the CHANGELINGS and the incredible author behind the series….

DON'T FORGET:  Dani will be available to chat Live with members, followers, fans and guests in the LITERAL ADDICTION Author Chatroom from 8:00 - 9:00pm EST (7-8pm Central/6-7pm Mountain & 5-6pm Pacific).

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hi Dani!   Welcome to Book Monster and LITERAL ADDICTION!   We’re so happy to have you with us today!

Dani: I’m really happy to be here. Thanks for the invitation. Love the décor of the blog, BTW – great banner and the sugar skulls in the background are among my favorite icons!

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  We like to start out getting to know our guest authors a little bit better?

Q1):   Can you tell us 3 little known things about yourself that we can't find out easily on the internet, in your bio, etc?

Dani: Oh, you mean SECRET stuff, right? Well, I don’t reveal this to just anybody but I adore pedicures. And I love my toenails painted bright pearly colors. Right now my favorite shade is “I’m Not Really A Waitress” crimson!

Let’s see – oh yes, I’m addicted to superhero comic books. I grew up reading them and I love movies created from them. Iron Man, Thor, the Avengers – I’m in heaven! All-time favorite? Hellboy!

What, I have to give up THREE secrets? Oh, all right. I’m a closet nerd. You heard me. I love sciences almost as much as the characters on Big Bang Theory (yup, physics too). I will watch history programs on any subject and I brake for museums.

2)  When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer and how long have you been writing for?

Dani: Perhaps it’s genetic, a remnant of my family’s Welsh-Irish roots. All I know is that I was fascinated with books before I could read, and once I learned to read, I knew I wanted to be the one who created the story. Plus, I was always the kid who liked Halloween better than Christmas – my love of the paranormal manifested early!

As an adult, I gravitated into journalism and communications. While I enjoyed it, it wasn’t quite what I’d dreamed of.

Around the year 2000, all that changed. I ran across a book by Christine Feehan and it literally electrified me – paranormal and romance TOGETHER? I was instantly hooked on the genre and it wasn’t very long before reading wasn’t enough – I simply had to start writing it.

3)  Do you have any interesting writing quirks or things that you must have with you to begin the writing process?

Dani: Coffee is a must. Chocolate helps. Other than that, it’s “have laptop, will travel”. I don’t usually require much in the way of peace and quiet. I’ve written chapters in airports, campgrounds, parking lots, coffee shops, city parks, and aboard our fishing boat out on the ocean. In fact, I just got a new laptop with greater battery capacity and I’m looking forward to writing in even more locations! I do have an office, but I’m almost never in it except to work on my website.

4)  What are some of your hobbies, or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?

Dani: I love gardening. Doesn’t matter if it’s just a porch pot or a plot of land, digging in the dirt is one of my favorite activities. I like drawing and painting, but haven’t gotten to do a lot of it – I’d love to take lessons.

5)  What are some of your favorite TV shows and movies?

Dani: Supernatural, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, Big Bang Theory, Ancient Aliens, any science show and any history show. Movies – anything with a superhero! Favorites include Ironman, Thor, Star Trek 2009, Hellboy, Avatar, John Carter of Mars.

6)  What are some of the books you have in your TBR pile right now?

Dani: Right now I’m reading Patricia Briggs’ “Fair Game”, Kevin Hearne’s “Hammered” and Jim Butcher’s “Fool Moon” (Yup, I always have several books on the go at once).

My towering TBR pile includes the rest of Jim Butcher’s “Dresden Files” series, Kevin Hearne’s “Tricked”, JR Ward’s “Lover Reborn” (I’m a huge BDB fan!), the rest of Faith Hunter’s “Jane Yellowrock” series, AND the rest of Jeaniene Frost’s “Night Huntress” series (Bones simply rules).

Most anticipated read – I’m dying for Karen Chance’s “Fury’s Kiss” to come out, which is the third book in the Dorina Basarab series. I loved every word of the Cassie Palmer series, but Dorina is the BEST!

7)  Do you have a personal favorite book among those you have written so far?  Maybe one that holds special meaning for you, etc?

Dani: I think my favorite is always the one I just finished. It’s like my child, and it’s standing and walking on its own now. I get very attached to the characters too. Right now I’m soooo fond of Josh Talarkoteen, the hero of Changeling Dawn. I love his gutsy attitude. He’s one determined human male and very secure in his masculinity!  In the story, he wanted Kenzie Macleod even though he knew she was a werewolf, and he proved himself absolutely worthy of her!

8)  If you could describe your life up to this moment in 5 words what would they be?

Dani: Five? Just five? You know I’m a writer, right? It’s easier to give five pages than only five words! Oh, all right then, here it is:

“Never give up. Never surrender.”

9)  If you were to write an auto-biography, what would you call it?

Dani: “Believing in possibilities.”

Book Monster Reviews/ LITERAL ADDICTION:  O.K, now we'd like to ask some questions relating to the books…

10)  For those that are not familiar with the series, can you please tell us what the CHANGELING series is about?

Dani: My series is about a family of shapeshifters, the Macleods. Long-lived and able to become wolves at will, they call themselves Changelings. Almost two centuries ago, they were forced to flee the wolf exterminations in Scotland and start a new life in northern Canada.

Today Changelings are masters of “hiding in plain sight”, and live very human lives most of the time. Your boss could be a Changeling. But so could the gal that does your pedicure. The coach of your company baseball team or even the cop that gives you a ticket for not wearing your seatbelt again could have furry tendencies. Your BFF could run on four feet at night and you wouldn’t know.

Changelings view their wolfen side as a wonderful gift, but it also complicates their lives, sometimes dangerously so.

Especially when it comes to love.

11)  What was the inspiration behind the CHANGELING series?

Dani: As far as I’ve been able to figure out, my new Changeling series was probably inspired by REAL wolves! One bright sunny morning when I lived on my little farm in northern Canada, I was stunned to see a pack of wolves – about 7 or 8 – lope leisurely across my yard not far from the house. No mistake about what these big dark creatures were.  I’d seen hundreds of coyotes before and these totally dwarfed them.

The wolves were amazingly beautiful creatures, running with ease and grace, seeming to float along rather than touch the ground. And I had a powerful impression that the wolves were happy as they ran together! It remains one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

However, I really didn’t sit down and plan the series. I started writing a story one day and the entire Macleod family turned up in my head. What a noisy, demanding bunch they were too! And then they all turned into wolves. I told them not to, but my characters never listen to me.

12)  Do you plan to write any more books in the CHANGELING series?  If so, when do you expect them to be released?

Dani: Yes! The core series really belongs to the Macleod family (there are six siblings and six books) but several of the secondary characters have become popular in their own right, so who knows what other stories may evolve? As to when, I don’t have an answer for that just yet. I have a new Changeling series starting up and another new paranormal project to finish first. But as soon as I have a date on the next release, I’ll be posting it on my website (and everywhere else I can think of!).

13)  If you could spend the day with any of your characters, who would it be, and what would you want to do?

Dani:  I think I’d enjoy hanging out with Birkie Peterson the most. She’s the queen of “down-to-earth”, like a wise and unflappable mentor and everybody’s favorite aunt rolled into one. And she loves to garden as much as I do!

14)  What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview, but have never been asked?  How would you answer it?

Dani: Not very many people ask if there’s a downside to being an author. And really, the biggest challenge of writing for me is sitting still for long periods of time!  I’d love to find a way to write where I can be more physically active.  I managed to rig a treadmill desk that will hold my laptop securely – but discovered that I’m not very coordinated! (the technical term is “can’t walk and chew gum at the same time”).  So now I’m considering a bicycle that has a laptop desk.

15)  Is there anything specific you would like to say to the readers while we have you here today?

Dani: I love my readers. Someone told me that romance readers are the most wonderful people in the world and I’ve found that to be true. The best feeling I get as a writer – and the one that makes all the hours worth it – comes when a reader really connects with something I’ve written. It’s like the two of you have suddenly become co-creators, because your imaginations have worked together to bring a character to life! It’s a unique and special relationship and I treasure it.
