Interview and Contest with Gini Koch

Gini Koch Interview Into:

Happy Friday the 13th  Monsters and Literal Addicts!  Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are happy to welcome author Gini Koch back to our sites today.

Gini Koch lives in Hell's Orientation Area (aka Phoenix, AZ), works her butt off (sadly, not literally) by day, and writes by night with the rest of the beautiful people. She writes the fast, fresh and funny Alien/Katherine "Kitty" Katt series for DAW Books and the Martian Alliance Chronicles series for Musa Publishing. She also writes under a variety of pen names (including G.J. Koch, Anita Ensal, Jemma Chase, A.E. Stanton, and J.C. Koch), listens to rock music 24/7, and is a proud comics geek-girl willing to discuss at any time why Wolverine is the best superhero ever (even if Deadpool does get all the best lines). She speaks frequently on what it takes to become a successful author and other aspects of writing and the publishing business. She can be reached through her website at
Her interests include seeing how often she can ask, "So, have I told you about this plot twist yet?" of her husband before he goes insane, going to rock concerts with her daughter, and training her pets to 'bring it'. Gini started writing to have an excuse to stay up late playing on the computer while listening to music and mooning over pictures of Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.

Now she's expanded her thinking -- she moons over a wide variety of hunks in order to keep the visual creative juices flowing. So to speak.
Gini is the creator of the amazing ALIEN/KATHERINE “KITTY” KATT series, which currently consists of five books:
Book #1 - "Touched by an Alien"
 Book #2 - "Alien Tango"
Book #3 - "Alien in the Family"
Book #4 - "Alien Proliferation"
Book #5 -  "Alien Diplomacy" which was just released on April 3.
In case you are not familiar with Gini's Aliens yet, here's the synopses of each book to keep you up to date….

"Touched by an Alien"
How can a sexy marketing manager join forces with an Alpha Centauri male in Armani to save the planet-using hairspray, a Mont Blanc pen, and rock n' roll?

Touched by an Alien

Marketing manager Katherine "Kitty" Katt steps into the middle of what appears to be a domestic dispute turned ugly. And it only gets uglier when the man turns into a winged monster, straight out of a grade-Z horror movie, and goes on a killing spree. Though Kitty should probably run away, she springs into action to take the monster down.

In the middle of the chaos a handsome hunk named Jeff Martini appears, sent by the "agency" to perform crowd control. He's Kitty's kind of guy, no matter what planet he's from. And from now on, for Kitty, things are going to be sexy, dangerous, wild, and out of this world

"Alien Tango"
For Katherine "Kitty" Katt, Alien Super-Being Exterminator, anti-alien conspiracies, threats from outer space, and a couple of killer alligators are all in a day's work, but internal alien conspiracies bring a new meaning to the terms chaos and confusion.

It's been five months since marketing manager Katherine "Kitty" Katt started working with the aliens from Alpha Centauri, and she and Jeff Martini are getting closer. But when an experimental spacecraft is mysteriously returned to the Kennedy Space Center, Kitty and the rest of her team are called in to investigate. Now the team must survive murderous attacks, remove a space entity from a group of astronauts, and avoid an unhinged woman with a serious crush on Kitty's high school boyfriend. And that's all before evil masterminds decide Kitty's extermination is vital

"Alien in the Family"
Planning any wedding is hard enough, but Katherine "Kitty" Katt and Jeff Martini have a lot more to worry about than seating arrangements, because multiple interstellar invasions, Alpha Team in mortal peril, and inter-alien conspiracies are all on the guest list -- and the gifts they've brought explode.

Super-Being Exterminator Kitty Katt and the Alpha Centaurian she loves, Jeff Martini, should be finalizing their wedding plans. But that was before she discovers Jeff is in line to become Emperor back on his home world. Kitty knows she is everything a royal family wouldn't approve of, and is bracing herself for the worst. As it turns out, the royal family is just the beginning. Especially when extraterrestrial Amazonian terrorists are determined to start and end Kitty and Jeff's nuptial festivities with a bang.

"Alien Proliferation"
A new set of conspiracies, old enemies, and a dangerous new drug being tested on unwilling subjects are more than enough to deal with, but new parents Jeff and Kitty Martini have an even bigger problem -- the bad guys want their newborn baby.
Alien Super-Being Exterminator Kitty Katt is expecting her first baby. But the alien attacks are getting more dangerous, and now Kitty and her Alpha Centaurion husband, Jeff, have to find out who's behind the conspiracy to kill Kitty's secret agent mom and what caused Kitty's transformation into a superhuman-and they've got to do it all before the baby shower...

"Alien Diplomacy"
Just Released April 3, 2012.

Being newlyweds and new parents is challenging enough. But Jeff and Kitty Martini are also giving up their roles as super-being exterminators and Commanders in Centaurion Division while mastering the political landscape as the new heads of Centaurion's Diplomatic Corps. Enter a shadowy assassination plot and a new set of anti-alien conspirators, and nothing will ever be the same...

Don't they sound incredible?!  Before you run off to start buying the books, let's learn more about Gini.  Since we've already had Gini on our sites (check out here first interview HERE), we thought we'd have some fun with this interview and just ask some random and crazy questions.

LIVE CHAT REMINDER - Gini will be chatting with us  tonight (4/13) over in the LITERAL ADDICTION Chatroom from 8:00 - 9:00pm EST (7-8pm CT, 6-4pm MDT & 5-6pm PDT) so stop by to say hi to Gini.

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hey Gini!  Welcome back to Book Monster and LITERAL ADDICTION!  We're happy to have you back and to help you promote the release of "Alien Diplomacy".

Gini:  Thanks, it's really great to be back! (And may I say I'm looking forward to the chat later on this evening? I may? Great!) And I'm really looking forward to the chat later this evening! (Yes, it's true -- I live to run the yap.)

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Since you're a repeat offender and we already asked you our standard interview questions the first time around, we thought we'd have some fun and just ask a few random and silly questions.

Q1):   If your house was on fire (everyone is already out safely) and you had the chance to grab one book, which book would you try to save and why?

Gini: Wait, don't the books count as "everyone" to be gotten out safely? (They do in MY house.) No, not for this question? *sigh* Fine.

This is a tough one. Do I go for one of the autographed copies? Or do I go for the hard-to-find one? Or the biggest? A complete works would be wise, but how do I leave behind a total favorite? I canna pick just one! (All the ebook folks are sniggering since they'd just grab their electronic readers and run, but hey, some of us still like the paper stuff…)

Ummm, okay. I'll go for the big one -- the Complete Works of O. Henry. No, wait. I'll go for the fave novel that is also signed, so Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. No, wait. Choose a classic that still gives you mega bang for the buck, so The Complete Sherlock Holmes by A. Conan Doyle. No, wait. The signed copy of Waiting for the Galactic Bus by Parke Godwin. No, wait, that would mean I couldn't take Good Omens. Or The Colour of Magic. No, wait. I grab ALL the autographed books that I can carry. No, wait…

Clearly I'd die in the fire if I actually had to choose. LOL

Q2)  If you could have the starring role in one film already made, which movie would you pick and why that movie?

Gini: This is, strangely enough, the hardest of all the questions for me. So hard that I answered all the others and then came back to this one. (Hey, I know how to pass tests, kids.)

I think the question's hard for me because I have never wanted to be the actress/character on the screen so much as I've wanted to be a different, and usually better, character in the movie. Which is probably the real reason I because a writer in the first place. (Well, that and the voices in my head. But it's the same thing, really.)

My first answer was that I wanted to be Leia in the Star Wars movies because then I get to make it with Han Solo. But Leia isn't a character I love all that much. Same with the idea of being Padme/Amadala in the "first" set of (really not nearly as good) Star Wars movies, so that I could actually go for Obi-Wan and kick that whiner Anakin to the curb. However, I have a feeling you're not asking me for how I'd like to re-write the movies. (Though, clearly, I have views about this.)

SO, in an effort to play along and actually answer your question versus continue to play "fix that major plot or character flaw", I guess I pick being Jane Blue in "Undercover Blues", which wasn't the biggest movie of its day, but is still one of my all-time faves. Jane (played by Kathleen Turner, who I sadly do not resemble in any way other than us both being females) totally rocks being a kick-ass super-spy while getting to be married to Jeff Blue (played by Dennis Quaid at his total yummiest), all while being a sexy wife and loving mother. I love everything about the movie -- the location (New Orleans), the dialog, the actors, the humor, the pacing, and the wit -- so I could willingly "be" Jane.

Q3)  If you could eliminate one thing that you have to do each day so that you never had to do it again, what would it be?

Gini: Housework. Followed closely by cooking.

Q4)  You've just been hired to a promotions position at a well known cereal company.  What would you put in a new breakfast cereal box as a gimmick?

Gini: This is a "ringer" question, because my career before becoming an author was in marketing and advertising. So I'd want to put in something that the kids would enjoy and the adults would want as well, that would also encourage them to buy my books and buy as much cereal as humanly possible.

Ergo, I'd put a Poof in each box.

Q5)  If you had the opportunity to rid the world of two things, what would your two choices be?

Gini: Hunger and politicians. Not necessarily in that order. (And world peace.)

(Virtual fist bump to all the Miss Congeniality fans who are now giggling.)

Q6)  What is the craziest (or stupidest) thing you've ever done?

Gini: Oh, I don't put that stuff out there where it can be saved for posterity and used against me. Let's just say, I did more than my share of crazy and stupid things, and they definitely influence my writing.

Besides, I'm sure I have PLENTY of crazy and stupid left to go.

Q7)  If you were a smurf, what would your name be?

Gini: Sexy Smurf. (Hey, you asked.)

Q8)  What was the first thing you thought of when you woke up this morning?

Gini: Do I really have to get up now? No? Great. Hitting the snooze button. (Repeated 5 times.)

Q9)  What's up next for your ALIEN/KATHERINE “KITTY” KATT series?

Gini: Book 6, Alien vs. Alien, is coming December 4, 2012. Then Alien in the House (April 2013), and Alien Collective (December 2013).

I was going to describe Alien vs. Alien, but really, Alien Diplomacy JUST released, and there's a teaser in the back of Alien Diplomacy for Alien vs. Alien…and I'd hate to give things away this early in the game. So, that's all you get on that. For now.

Oh, well, I'll give you one thing, which is, in its way, both for Alien Diplomacy AND Alien vs. Alien (I'm a giver, me).

If Touched by an Alien was all about the fuglies, and Alien Tango was all about the 'gators, and Alien in the Family was all about the Poofs, and Alien Proliferation was all about the Gothic, baby (and you can be sure that they were), then Alien Diplomacy is all about the change, and Alien vs. Alien is gonna be all about the birds.

Q10)  What other projects do you have coming up?

Gini: Writing as G.J. Koch, I have the start of a new series with Night Shade Books -- Alexander Outland: Space Pirate -- that will release in trade paperback and ebook formats June 5, 2012.

"Trouble’s brewing out in space, and Alexander Outland -- the least likely hero in the galaxy -- and his eccentric crew have to save the day, despite the fact they’d prefer to take the money and run…"

Alexander Outland: Space Pirate is soft science fiction with a lot of humor, action, and romance. It's set in the far future, and doesn't have any connection with either my Alien series with DAW Books/Penguin or my Martian Alliance Chronicles series with Musa Publishing. However, I think those who like Kitty & Company and/or who enjoy the crew of the Hummingbird will love Alexander and his band of space misfits.

Speaking of which, in addition to the Martian Alliance Chronicles, I also have a variety of novelettes and novellas with Musa Publishing ( written as Anita Ensal, Jemma Chase, and A.E. Stanton. There's a bunch up there now, and more coming soon (I promise!).

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Thank you again Gini for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer our crazy questions.  We would love to have you back again to help you promote the next ALIEN/KATHERINE “KITTY” KATT book if you're available.
Gini: They were great questions! And I'd absolutely love to be back whenever y'all want me!

I'm a fan of the series, so I'm glad the publishing schedule doesn't make us wait a year or more for releases. The down side is it'll be over sooner...sniff...sniff.

I absolutely LOVE this series & Amazon UK FINALLY delivered my copy of Alien Diplomacy today WOOHOO!!!! I'm so excited lol.

Great interview - The question about which book to save was evil though, how could anyone choose? hehe. I think Gini needs to get a job marketing cereals because I would buy shed loads if the boxes had poofs in them :o)

Great interview, I can't believe how many stories Gini has out there. I haven't read any of the others besides the Alien series, so I going to have to check them out. Especially Alexander Outland: Space Pirate, that one sounds like fun.

Thank you for the interesting and fun interview! I am a big fan of Gini's Kitty Katt series, she introduced me to sci-fi and to this day remains one of my fav series (which let's be honest with Kitty, Martini, Christopher and all the other wonderful characters is no surprise at all ;-)

I can only repeat what others have said: you HAVE TO read this series, even if you don't like sci-fi I guarantee you will love this series! I did! :-D
