Q&A Interview and Contest with Jeanne C. Stein

Jeanne C. Stein Interview Intro:

Hello everyone!  LITERAL ADDICTION and Book Monster Reviews are very happy to welcome Jeanne C. Stein to our sites today.

As we hear it told, Jeanne and her husband are quiet, mild people and great friends.  Mostly. There has been the occasional rare instance of Jeanne out in her front yard at 1:22 in the morning (according to the police report), in her pajamas, shouting unintelligible obscenities at a neighbor's barking dog.  Still, her neighbor swears it was only that one instance, and when the dog eventually disappeared, it had absolutely nothing to do with the odd cooking odors coming from the Stein’s grill next door.

Since Jeanne is a "vampire writer" it is a foregone conclusion that rumors abound.  Her neighbor weighed in regarding said rumors:

“The first rumor that needs addressing is that she is a vampire. This is absolutely untrue. According to the people in her kick-boxing group, she is usually very gentle and controlled. I was told this directly by the man with the neck brace. He should know because she was the last person he trained with before he had to go to the emergency room for what we were told was a kidney stone.”

“Jeanne has lived for years in San Diego and there is no reason (despite rumors that continue to circulate) to believe that she found it necessary to move. The San Diego police have no records that they will share with civilians, but I heard the desk sergeant say something faintly like, "..dogs missing..".  Certainly nothing there.”

So there you have it - the unofficial biography tidbits from Jeanne’s former neighbor.  J  In all seriousness though, Jeanne is an American Urban Fantasy author currently living in Colorado. As stated above, she was raised and educated in San Diego, which is the setting for her contemporary vampire fantasy.

Jeanne is active in the writing community, belonging to Sisters in Crime both nationally and in San Diego and Los Angeles. She also belongs to Horror Writers of America, RWA and Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers. She was named RMFW’s Writer of the Year for 2008 an honor given to a writer who has contributed to the organization as well as achieved success in publication, and was nominated again for Writer of the Year 2012.

Her well renowned ANNA STRONG CHRONICLES currently has 7 installments – “The Becoming”, “Blood Drive”, “The Watcher”, “Legacy”, “Retribution”, “Chosen”,  and “Crossroads”.

For those of you not yet familiar with Jeanne’s work, we thought we’d give you the synopses of a handful of the books in the ANNA STRONG CHRONICLES to peak your interests:

“The Becoming”

Anna Strong is trained for anything--until she's attacked one night, only to awaken in a dark world that exists between the living and the dead. Here, Anna struggles with her love for the two men who inhabit each realm. As her two worlds collide, fate plunges Anna into the ultimate battle between good and evil, where survival is not just for the living.

“The Watcher”

Vampire Anna has become a Watcher--one of the supernatural worlds enforcers--even as she fights to control her vampiric rage. After a series of very dangerous events threatens to draw out her unstable powers, her Watcher mentor sends her away for her own safety. But if theres one thing Anna has always been able to find, its trouble.

With her partner out of town, her family abroad, and her mentor estranged, newly-turned vampire Anna Strong is keeping a low profile.

But now young vampires are turning up dead, completely drained of their life force. And though Anna wants to say no when Williams, her former teacher and now leader of a supernatural enforcement squad, asks for her help, she can't. But soon, she'll wish she did.

After the death of Anna's old vampire mentor causes ripples in the mortal world, Anna needs to lie low. But when Max--an FBI agent and Anna's former flame--comes to her with reports that bodies are showing up on the Mexican border drained of blood, Anna has no choice but to get involved.

They sound fabulous right!!?  We can tell you from experience that they really are…  How about we get to the Interview to learn some more about Jeanne and her work?

Jeanne C. Stein Interview

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Hi Jeanne.  We’re so happy you could join us today!  We’re very happy to introduce some new readers to your fabulous series, and we’re honored that you’re here to allow us die-hard fans to talk with you a bit.
Jeanne: thank you for having me. I should mention that I have nothing against dogs…quiet, well-behaved dogs. The fact that I had two pain-in-the-ass barkers living next door and that they both died within two weeks of each other is simple a coincidence. I had NOTHING to do with it. I swear.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  We like to start out by finding out a bit more about our guest author, and then we’ll dig into the books…
Q1): Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we couldn’t find out easily on the Internet?
Jeanne: I’m a fan of The Young and the Restless soap; a James Bond bibliophile; have a collection of teddy bears.

Q2):  How and when did you start writing?
Jeanne: I haven’t always been a writer or wanted to be a writer. I have always loved reading, though, especially mysteries and vampires. When my husband and I moved to Colorado I decided to take the time to try my hand at writing a mystery. I couldn’t sell it until I added a vampire protagonist. I realized then I’d found my niche.

Q3):  What are some of your hobbies or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?
Jeanne: There isn’t a lot of time left!! But I do love kick boxing and hiking when the weather’s right and gardening.

Q4):  What are 3 things that never fail to make you smile?
Jeanne: The birds at the feeder outside my dining room window; Beatles songs; my husband.

Q5):  If you could have a superpower, what would you want it to be and why?
Jeanne: I wish I could fly. I love traveling, but airports aren’t much fun.

Q6):  What’s a typical writing day like for you?  Is there anything that you absolutely have to have with you, or do you have any interesting writing quirks?
Jeanne:  I have to have coffee to start my day-that’s not a quirk, but a necessity! I can write anywhere but I do have a desk where I keep my favorite pictures, awards, mementos and books close by. I start early in the morning with email and promo stuff, then write to 11 or so, break for lunch and the gym, back at it at 1 until I reach my daily word count of 2000. Rinse. Repeat.

Q7):  What are some of your favorite movies and TV shows?
Jeanne: Hmmm…Sons of Anarchy, anything done by Joss Whedon, True Blood, Breaking Bad, Torchwood, Dexter, The Walking Dead. Pretty dark, I know. Movies? Haven’t seen one in a while that stuck with me except maybe Act of Valor. All time favorites are the Godfather (I & II), Goodfellas, Heat, Bad Influence (with a very young, very bad Rob Lowe.)

Q8):  Was there any specific inspiration behind the creation of the ANNA STRONG CHRONICLES?
Jeanne: No specific inspiration. I envisioned a strong female character who was independent, loyal to her family and friends, not afraid to defend herself. So I made her a bounty hunter. She was no shrinking violet as a human so she certainly wouldn’t be one as a vampire. At the same time, I wanted her to have a family she cared about and human friends so that one of her biggest challenges would be hiding her true nature from those she loved the most.

Q9):  What were some of the challenges in bringing the series to life?
Jeanne: Making Anna sympathetic. Most vampires aren’t seen that way. I didn’t want to downplay the vampiric aspects—she does need human blood to survive, she has super-human strength, she has no reflection, etc. At the same time she tries to live her life as a mortal. It’s a constant balancing act.

Q10):  Is “Crossroads” the final book of the series or can we expect more or maybe a spinoff?
Jeanne: No, there are actually two more books. Haunted comes out August 28 this year and the ninth and final book August 2013. There’s always the possibility Anna will be back in one form or another though. I’ve lived with her so long, I can’t imagine my life without her.

Q11):  Do you have a personal favorite book of the series so far?  Why?
Jeanne: My favorite is always the one I’m working on at the moment!!

Q12):  What else is in store for Jeanne C. Stein that we fans can look forward to?
Jeanne: Well, there is a new paranormal romance series coming sometime next year. No details yet except that I’m writing it with a co-author, Samantha Sommersby, and we pitched it as: Without a Trace meets Angel--this Angel being an age-old Siren turned FBI Agent who is cursed by mortality and partnered with a hunky alpha werewolf. The premise is our protag is one of the three sirens cursed by Demeter for failing to protect Persephone from being kidnapped by Hades. In an attempt to redeem herself, she must live as a human, in her present-day reincarnation as an FBI agent, to save female kidnap victims. That’s a very brief, very condensed description. It’s different from what I’ve written before but we sold it to Penguin so let’s hope readers like it, too.

Q13):  Anything else – CONS, signings, etc that you want to make sure that everyone knows about?
Jeanne: Let’s see, the big ones: Romantic Times, ComicCon, DragonCon come to mind. As we get closer to the release of my new book I’ll post bookstore signing dates on my website.

Q14):  Is there a question that you have always wanted to be asked in an interview but have never been asked?  How would you answer that?
Jeanne: I think I’ve been asked everything, including some questions I wish I hadn’t been asked…like were you abused and is that why you write such dark themes? The answer is: No~

Q15):  Is there anything special you would like to say to your readers while we have you here today?
Jeanne: You readers are why I do what I do. I will forever be appreciative of your support and hope to meet as many of you as possible in person at one time or another. Never be shy about coming up and saying hello or emailing me. I answer every message!

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Jeanne, thank you so much again for being with us today!  We’re excited to talk with you some more Live in tonight’s chat and we would love to have you back again in August for “Haunted” if you’d be interested.
