Q&A Interview and Contest with Jackie Ivie

Jackie Ivie Interview

Happy Friday Book Monsters and Literal Addicts!  Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are very pleased to welcome author Jackie Ivie to our sites today.

Jackie Ivie was born and raised in a suburb outside Utah's capital, beautiful Salt Lake City. The second in a family of four daughters and one son, Jackie was constantly amusing her siblings with her invented games, escapades, and stories. And she was always reading. She would even walk the family dog, with one hand holding the leash, while the other held the ever-present book. No subject went unread, but once she discovered Historical Romances, there was no doubting her favorite genre.

Jackie has always been the busy type, rarely sitting still without being occupied in at least one activity, and usually more. When she was younger, it was nothing to find her watching television, while doing her homework, listening to music, crocheting like a madwoman, and reading, all at the same time.

After graduating, Jackie gained secure employment with a large service company and relocated with her growing family to the neighboring, sparsely-populated state of Wyoming. She then spent several years enjoying the wildlife, scenery, and open space that Wyoming is known for.  In addition to writing, Jackie is an accomplished artist in several mediums, preferring mixed media. She has several pictures in print and has exhibited in art showings throughout the West. There was never anything she loved doing more than reading, however, and once she discovered the thrill involved with putting her own words and fantasies on paper there was no stopping her.

In 2001, Jackie and her family took a huge step and moved to the largest state of the nation; Alaska. Although it was her job that brought her here, Jackie has grown to love this land of amazing contrasts, breathtaking vistas, and the ever-present resident, the Alaskan moose. There's nothing else like it, and the very long days of summer lend themselves to hours and hours of energizing tasks, while the long winter nights are just right for her real love...writing.

Jackie has now written thirteen novels and is continually starting more. The thrill of writing was enhanced by seeing her actual story in print. Lady of the Knight was her first published work. It’s been followed by nine Knight books, with the latest A Perfect Knight for Love due out in late summer.

Jackie is the creator of the paranormal romance series, VAMPIRE ASSASSIN LEAGUE, as well as numerous historical romance standalone novels.  To keep you up to par, we've included the synopsis of the VAL series, so let's check them out now….

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hi Jackie!  Welcome to Book Monster and LITERAL ADDICTION.  Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to drop by and spend some time with us!  We’re happy to have you with us today!

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  We always like to start out by getting to know you a little bit better.

Q1):   Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we can't find out on the internet, in your bio, etc?

Jackie: OKAY.  Hmmmm…
Number One:  I carried mail in Wyoming.  On a walking route.  Carried up to 35 lbs. of mail in a satchel.  Through snow, sleet, hail, gloom…you know the postal creed.  I was in great shape back then!
Number Two:  I was a carhop for one summer over at A&W Root beer in Salt Lake City.  Right across from the Century Theater.  I won’t mention the year.  I just checked and it’s still there.  What do you know?  I must have been about 3.  (Hahahaha!)
Number Three:  I play five musical instruments (but four are stringed and related so I’m cheating): violin, viola, cello, bass, and piano.  Piano and cello are my faves.

Q2)  You said in your bio that when you were a child you loved to read.  Did you want to become a writer even back then?

Jackie:  Not so I remember.  I had/have so many interests.  I never considered writing as an occupation.  Heck, I still don‘t know what I’m going to be when I grow up!  However…when we’d go for the summer to my grandparent’s cabin, I always dragged along spiral notebooks and pens.  I’d sit out there on a rock in the forest and pen some short story murder mystery fiction.  Hmm…wonder what happened to them?

Q3)  We know you've always loved historical romances.  What made you decide to start writing in the paranormal romance genre?

Jackie:  I got contracted to do one, and freaked!  (Can I even write a vampire?  Is it possible?)  See…I scare easily.  I didn’t sleep for two nights after seeing The Shining.  I read Bram Stoker’s Dracula back in High school.  Don’t do that at night.  Alone in the house.  I haven’t had much to do with anything paranormal.  Haven’t read anything by Anne Rice.  Didn’t watch Lost Boys.  30 Days of Darkness.  Dusk ‘til Dawn.  Etc. Etc.  Haven’t read or seen anything Twilight.
So - in 2008 when I got a call from my agent asking if I wanted to be in an anthology with Hannah Howell, I jumped.  (YES!)  Found out it would be set in the Highlands (No problem.)  25,000 words (OK.  I’ll attempt to write short.)  It features a vampire.  (Gulp.  Uh…oh)
I sat down.  Started a vampire short story, and a bit later I had KNIGHT AFTER NIGHT.  And I was hooked!  Hooked!  Hooked!

I sent it to my agent.  She wrote back.  Got news - the anthology is historical and you have more words - 33,000.  I need to write a HISTORICAL vampire?  (Can I even do that?!)  I did.  The result is A KNIGHT BEYOND BLACK in the anthology Highland Hunger.
But…that left a big question.  What about KNIGHT AFTER NIGHT?  I thought it was a great lead-in for a series.  I’ve never done a series, or paranormal, or short stories, but as I said – I was HOOKED!  They are so cool!  Just imagine!  Vampires.  Sexy as all get-out!  Assassins.  Think of the history I can play with!  I even had an idea for my next vampire – a drop-dead sexy woman and her professor mate.  I had a tagline – “We Kill for Profit”.  My agent didn’t agree.  (Insert long story nobody needs to read here)  We parted ways over it.  And…I decided to do the Vampire Assassin League by myself.

Q4)  What are some hobbies and interests you like to do when you're not writing?

Jackie:  Cross stitch!!!  I’ll attach some pictures.  I’m a cross stitch addict.  –I also knit and crochet if my arm isn’t hurting.  I have lots of blankets all over the house that I crocheted.  The dogs even have their own blankets.  And I still dabble in music.  I have an old, used piano and a cello in my craft room.  I play when I feel like it.  (I forgot that playing a cello hurts your fingers if you don’t have calluses on them.  Bummer  I have to use fingertip bandaids).  Oh!  I draw. I could get back into that.  I have a lot of tools of that craft.  I watch a lot DVD history documentaries, and learning courses.  (great fun and absorbing)  This is my research time, and I can do needlework while I watch!  Double bonus!  I did so much research for my latest VAL – she’s a ninja, so I had to check out every ninja movie and documentary.  I now know about Samurai swords, ninja weaponry, Shogun history, Japanese traditional clothing….

Q5)  Do you have any writing quirks or things that you can't go without to start the writing process?

Jackie:  Unfortunately.  (Grr)  And even though it kills my arm and shoulder, I still can’t keep from doing it!  I’m talking about FREECELL.  It’s another of my addictions.  (The inventor of this game should be contracted by a VAL associate)  I’m not good.  I have a 54% win ratio, but I don’t care.  I move the cards as fast as possible so it’ll trigger my muse when I’m facing writer’s block.  (Did I say it hurts my arm and shoulder?  It does.  Damn game)

Q6)  Who are some of your favorite authors and what books do you have in your TBR pile right now?

Jackie:  Irene Peterson!  (She is truly amazing) – And there’s Lizbeth Selvig.  Pauline Trent.  Tiffinie Helmer.  Morgan O’Reilly….  I also have over 600 Barbara Cartland books, some published in the 1950’s.  I’ve read through them all at least twice.  I might start through them again.  They’re fun.  Truly.  Corny as all get out, but fun.  And historically accurate.

Q7)  If you could have any super power, what would you want it to be and why?

Jackie:  I had to think about this one.  I don’t know.  Hmm…I’ve got it!  I want to be INVISIBLE!!!

Q8) What are some of your favorite television shows and movies?

Jackie:  I don’t watch a lot of tv, but I have these on DVD collections:  NCIS - I love Anthony.  Bones - I love Booth. Hmm…I’m sensing an alpha-male thing here…

Q9)  What is your favorite guilty pleasure?

Jackie:  Oh man!  Busted.  Vanilla frosting!  To heck with the cake – my hubby can have it.  I even keep a can of the premade stuff in the fridge for spreading on graham crackers if I can’t find a cake. (Bad Jackie.  Bad)

Q10)  For those who are not yet familiar with the VAMPIRE ASSASSIN LEAGUE, can you tell us what the series is about?

Jackie:  Woohoo!  Can I?!  Vampire Assassin league is a mysterious association of killers.  With one creed:  they kill for profit, anything else is free.  VAL’s leader is a vampire is named Akron.  Nobody ever gets to see him.  Akron’s an enigma.  A mystery.  He’s assembled an elite group over the centuries.  All vampires.  Covert and deadly and gorgeous.  Every vampire has differing skills and backgrounds, and one true desire:  to find their mate.  Without this mate, my vampires are doomed to wander the earth – alone and chaste.  So…when their one mate does show up, do the sparks ever fly!!

Q11)   How many books do you have planned for the VAMPIRE ASSASSIN LEAGUE series?

Jackie:  Well…there are a lot of people still to assassinate.  Hahaha!  I was originally going to do eight, and then let Akron find his mate.  Now…I don’t know.  I just finished #6 and was basking in the glow of finishing a story and then wham!  The idea for #7 just hit me.  I’ve already got a start.  And now I’m getting all my research lined up.  I’m hooked – and I already know I’ve got an addictive personality.  So…there could be dozens of VAL installments!

Q12)  If you could spend the day with any of the characters from the VAL series, who would it be and what would you want to do?

Jackie:  Akron.  I’d chase his butt down make him get a portrait done.  (just a small one – for personal use.  And blackmail potential later).  I want to research his data.  He seems to know everything his VAL colleagues are up to, and has some great advice.  How does he do it?  Where did he come from?  What’s his story?  How old he is?  What the heck does he look like???

Q13)  What do you have coming up next with your historical romances?

Jackie:  It’s called A PERFECT KNIGHT FOR LOVE.  Due out in September.  The cover rocks!  This one is a prequel to 2005’s TENDER IS THE KNIGHT.  I planned on connecting all my Highland historical romances sooner or later, because every clan has such history and potential.  They’re now listed as “Clans”.  This upcoming one is the story of Colin MacGowan’s great-great-grandfather, Thayne.  If anyone reads TENDER, there’s one line in there where Colin says something like, “We MacGowans always wed well.”  So…this is the history behind that statement.

Q14)  What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview but never have been?  Can you answer that for us?

Jackie:  Hmmm…  Have to think on this one.  OK.  I did.  I’m still blank.  Anything I say could be self-incriminating.  LOL

Q15)  Is there anything special you would like to say to all the readers out there?

Jackie:  Thank you.  From the bottom of my heart. Writing is a solitary world, and without readers - it would be lonely, too.  Thank you again!

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Thank you again Jackie for taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down and talk to us.  We would love to have you back on Book Monster and LITERAL ADDICTION when you're ready to promote your next release.
Jackie:  Thank you.  It’s a huge pleasure!  And…I gotta warn you.  I’m pretty prolific.  THIS MAN AND WOMAN just came out this month, and I’m already going on FOREVER AS ONE.  That one should be out in May.  And then there’s SHOULD THERE BE ANY, and after that WITH JUST CAUSE…
I mean, talking with you could get addicting, too!

Hi everyone!

About the covers models - and Sheree tagged it perfectly! (what can I say, they're gorgeous men. haha):

Brooks Johnson (From Hot Damn Designs) is featured on FOREVER KNIGHT (which just won the JABBIC cover contest in Houston for 2011 Historical!) and he's on TOGETHER TO JOIN, THIS MAN AND WOMAN, and KNIGHT AFTER NIGHT.

As for Nathan Kamp:
I think I got him a lot of times on my historicals, starting with LADY OF THE KNIGHT in 2004 which is one of his first. Then there's
TENDER IS THE KNIGHT (JABBIC cover winner best cover for 2005)
A KNIGHT WELL SPENT (JABBIC winner for 2008)

And wait til you see my latest cover FOREVER AS ONE! I just had it set - and it's another new model.

I had to go over hundreds of photos just to pick him. What can I say? It's a tought job some days.

PS - Be sure and get your free copy of THIS MAN AND WOMAN over at Amazon this weekend!

Awesome interview! You gave as a great taste of you and your writing style. I think we were sisters separated at birth, lol. I am also a manic crafter (counted cross stitch, fabric painting, knitting, crocheting, sewing, scrapbooking...) and love to do multiple things at a time. I used to drive my Mother nuts knitting fisherman sweaters (w/o the pattern) and watch TV at the same time. I'm also addicted to frosting (& the cake) and reading historical & paranormal (highland) romance, big Hannah Howell fan. I'd love to win your contest, I have all your historicals :-)

What a super-cool interview. You know what a fan I am and it was so much fun to learn even more new things about you. I knew about the cross-stitch and the drawing talents, I did not know about the musician side of you. I expect a mini-concern next time I see you :-) Good luck with VAL - I'm so in awe of you doing everything you do!!
