Q&A Interview and Contest with Dana Marie Bell

Dana Marie Bell Interview Intro:
Hello everyone!  LITERAL ADDICTION and Book Monster Reviews are proud to welcome the very talented Dana Marie Bell to our sites today!
Dana wrote her first short story when she was thirteen years old.  She attended the High School for Creative and Performing Arts for creative writing, where freedom of expression was the order of the day.  When her parents moved out of the city and placed her in a Catholic high school for her senior year she tried desperately to get away, but the nuns held fast, and she graduated with honors despite herself.  She’s now a best-selling author with Samhain Publishing and has consistently earned top reviews from RT Book Reviews and other reviewers.
Dana has lived primarily in the Northeast with a brief stint on the US Virgin Island of St. Crois.  She lives with her soul-mate and husband Dusty, their two maniacal children, an evil ice-cream stealing cat and a bull terrier that thinks it’s a Pekinese.  She’s been heard to describe herself as “vertically challenged” and “a lapsed brunette”.  ;-)
We highly suggest that you check out Dana’s entire backlist - you can find synopses and other information HERE and on her Website - every series is a phenomenal read.  For the sake of today’s Event though, we’re going to concentrate on Dana’s new and upcoming releases and the series that they belong to.
“Howl for Me”, TRUE DESTINY Book #3 was just released today and is the primary reason we have Dana here today – to promote and celebrate.  So, for those of you not yet familiar with the TRUE DESTINY series, here are the synopses for the 3 books.

“Very Much Alive”
Kiran Tate and Logan Saeter have been on the run from Oliver Grimm for so long they've forgotten what it's like to be free. Ending Grimm's power games won't be easy, but this time they have an ace in the hole. PI Jordan Grey, Guardian Investigation's resident hot shot--and Grimm's step-granddaughter. Jordan Grey has her doubts when Logan and Kir show up in her office with a tall tale of how her step-grandfather has framed them for murder. And to top it all off, they're claiming that they're really the ancient Norse gods Loki and Baldur, and that Grimm is Odin! When the two lovers see the sexy detective for the first time, stopping Grimm suddenly takes a back seat to seducing her into their arms. But Grimm never rests, and when his anger spills over onto Jordan, it sets them all on a collision course with a destiny that will rock their world....

“Eye of the Beholder”
Travis Yardley-Rudiger deliberately stayed away from Jamie Grimm, desperate not to pull her into the petty war of wills between him and her grandfather, Oliver Grimm. Unfortunately the reemergence of Baldur and Loki and their claiming of Jamie’s sister Jordan put her squarely in Grimm’s sights. Her torture at Grimm’s hands left Travis determined to claim and protect the woman he’s loved for years—but first he has to find a way to break the news that Travis is actually Tyr.
Jamie keeps seeing the weirdest things. Flames in her sister’s eyes, for instance…even Travis’s entire body glowing. Then there are the recurring nightmares she just can’t shake. One thing is certain: Travis’s usual standoffish attitude has done an abrupt one-eighty. He’s even gone so far as to move with her into her sister’s condo while she convalesces. And when he reveals who—and what—he is, Jamie is left to wonder what the Norse God of Justice could possibly want with a crazy redhead with severe family issues.
As far as he’s concerned, it will be Travis’s pleasure to show her…

“Howl for Me”

For a love that will last through the ages, they must fight an evil older than time.

Jeffrey Grimm’s grandfather, Odin, tortured and nearly killed his twin sister. He’s on a mission to return the favor. To get the job done, he needs the world's oldest living laser hair removal candidate: Fenrisùlfr, the werewolf prophesy has decreed will kill Odin at Ragnarrok.

When he gets to Norway, though, he discovers the wolf can change into a man…a man so sexy that Jeff is blindsided with lust. And, despite his blood ties to Odin, Fen wants him with equal ferocity.

An attraction to the blood kin of his oldest enemy? Fenris figures he must have been caged far too long. Yet as soon as the magical phrase that frees him leaves Jeff’s lips, Fenris has no choice. He is bound to protect Jeff at all costs, even if it means giving up his hatred of the man who betrayed him—and learning to live with the horrors of toothpaste and the Internet.

Odin isn’t through with him, though. And when he gets his hands on Jeff, Fen calls upon everything within him to fulfill the prophecy... even if it means his own death.

Next up for Dana is the print release of “Artistic Vision, Book #3 of her GRAY COURT series.  For our readers not yet familiar with the GRAY COURT series, here are the synopses for the 3 available installments:

“Dare to Believe”
 GRAY COURT Book #1:

He’ll fulfill her wildest fantasies- but only if she believes.

Leo Dunne has been searching his entire life for the one person born just for him. He finds her working in his own company, but the shy little Ruby Halloway constantly hides from him. He hatches a devilish plot with her best friend to bring her out of her shell, and the result proves her desire is more than a match for his own.

Ruby has had the hots for her boss for some time now, but she knows business and pleasure shouldn’t mix. While that can’t stop a girl from dreaming, she sticks by her guns and does her best never to be alone with the handsome CEO. Until the company masquerade party, where she discovers a passion with him that leaves a mark on her soul.

A family emergency calls Leo away, and rather than spend one night out of Ruby’s arms, he convinces her to go with him. With his brother’s life on the line, it’s vital she learn how to deal with who, and what, her new lover really is—before it’s too late.

“Noble Blood”
 GRAY COURT Book #2:

For Lord Duncan Malmayne, it was love at first sight with his true bond, the lovely half-Sidhe, half-leprechaun Moira Dunne. Yet something is missing from his relationship with the fiery redhead, something that prevents him from completing the Claiming and making Moira his forever.
As problems multiply in what should be a magical, idyllic time, the depression weighing on Moira’s Sidhe heart signals a potentially devastating condition. Mate sickness. Her instinct tells her what’s missing: Jaden Blackthorn, Gray Court vampire, Duncan’s bond brother and closest friend-who tactfully withdrew from their lives after Duncan declared his love.

Jaden is both heartbroken and elated that the two people he loves most in the world are together. It’s best he cut off all contact to give them space to complete the Claiming. But trouble is brewing in the Malmayne clan, and when Jaden’s forced back into their lives by the Hob, their extremely rare tribond clicks with a reaction that’s swift, sensual and all-consuming.
But not everyone looks upon it as a blessing. In fact, the price of their love could be a potentially fatal shift of power…

“Artistic Vision”
 GRAY COURT Book #3:

Akane Russo, part dragon, part Seer and one of Robin’s top Blades, has been given a job to do, and damn it she’s going to do it. The Malmaynes are up to their old tricks, and the Dunne family still has no plans to accommodate them. She’s been tasked with keeping Shane Dunne safe from the Malmaynes and their kidnapping ways. But can anyone keep her safe from the heat in Shane’s gaze?

Shane knows the woman meant for him will never come to him willingly. Luckily for him she’s been ordered by none other than the Hob to guard him, and he’s going to use that to his advantage every chance he gets. He knows it’s only a matter of time before the dragoness succumbs and lets Shane Claim her like they both want. When they come together he knows the results will be beyond his wildest imaginings.

When Akane winds up poisoned by gold and forced into temporary heat, marking Shane suddenly takes top priority. Keeping her new mate safe, and sane, will be a brand new puzzle, one the Blade isn’t sure she can solve in time.
Dana also recently announced that she sent “Cynful”, HALLE SHIFTERS (a spinoff of the HALLE PUMAS series) Book #2 off to her editor.  Here is the synopsis for its predecessor, “Bear Necessities”, HALLE SHIFTERS Book #1.

“Bear Necessities”

To hold onto his love, he must release his beast. Halle Shifters, Book 1 Once a Bear sets his mind on a mission, it's best to stay out of his way. Alexander "Bunny" Bunsun is that Bear. Something's not right with his cousin Chloe, and he's come to Halle, PA, to sort it out, turn his Harley around and head home to Oregon. Until an enticing scent lures him into the local tattoo shop. There she is. An inked, Southern-drawled she-Wolf with lime-green hair. His perfect mate. Tabitha Garwood's rotten day just got worse. Her Outcast status makes her a target for harassment with alarming regularity. And now, in the middle of a root touch-up, looking like a half-melted Skittle, she's met her destined mate. The only upside? She finally has a protector in the form of a huge, tattooed, shaved-head Bear who vibrates with carefully restrained power. When Chloe is left for dead and Tabby is threatened, only Alex can keep his growing family safe. Giving Tabby the loving home she needs, though, could come at a price-Alex must give up the control he's worked a lifetime to attain. Which means someone could die at the hands-and claws-of his beast.

We know, it’s not nearly enough and we really do suggest that you check out her entire backlist, but now that we’ve given you some information on Dana and 3 of her series, what do you say we get to the Interview and learn even more?

Dana Marie Bell Interview

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Hi Dana, Happy Release Day!  We’re very happy to have you with us and are excited to help you promote and celebrate “Howl for Me”.
DANA: I’m very happy to be here. Thank you for having me.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  We like to start by finding out a bit more about our guest author, and then we’ll dig into the books…
Q1): Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we couldn’t find out easily on the Internet?
DANA: Huh. My life’s a pretty open book (no pun intended). Hmm… One of my favorite restaurants is Don Pablo’s; I am TERRIFIED every time I have to speak in public, but I do it anyway; and I have some sort of freaky skin allergy that gives me itchy bumps on my arms whenever I use standard soaps or suntan lotions.

Q2):  What are 2 things that always make you smile, and 2 things that never fail to piss you off?
DANA: A child’s laughter and the holidays at my mother’s. The things that piss me off? Prejudice of any kind, and people trying to preach to me. I respect the beliefs of others even when I don’t agree with them, and I request the same courtesy of others. Unfortunately, that courtesy is a rare commodity these days.

Q3):  What’s your favorite inspirational quote?
DANA: It changes, depending on my mood. When I’m feeling low, or things aren’t going quite my way with my stories, it’s a quote from Winnie-the-Pooh: “Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” I mutter it to myself at the end of a long, frustrating day.
I think my current favorite is from Albert Einstein: "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
Of course, my absolute favorite quote right now isn’t inspirational at all: “I think that statue over there is a statement on modern life. The statement is ‘Well, shit’.” – Varric Tethras, Dragon Age II

Q4):  What are some of your hobbies or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not working, writing or taking care of other business?
DANA: It’s no secret that I play video games. I especially love RPG’s, role-playing style games like Dragon Age (see the above Varric quote), Mass Effect and NeverWinter Nights: Mask of the Betrayer. If I’m not saving the pixilated world, I probably have my Nook in my hands, reading my favorite romances.

Q5):  What’s your guilty pleasure?

DANA: RuPaul’s Drag Race. My boys will leave the room when it’s on, but I’m addicted to those queens. R, my thirteen year old, walked in the room the first time I watched it, saw the men in drag, and left, muttering, “That is SO wrong.”

Q6):  We know this is a tough one, but who are some of your favorite authors, and what are a couple titles in your TBR pile right now?
DANA: Recently, it’s Mary Calmes, LB Gregg, Amy Lane and JL Langley. I’ve been reading a lot of M/M, much to Dusty’s surprise. He keeps peeking over my shoulder to check out what I’m reading, then getting squicked out when man-bits are touching man-bits.
You’d think he’d learn. “What are you readi… oh. Um. Can’t you read David Weber like a normal geek?”
I’m waiting for Mary Calmes’ Mine to come out, and the next JL Langley shifter book. I tend not to keep a TBR pile, since I read the book I want as soon as it comes out.

Q7):  If you could spend the day with any of your characters who would you want to spend it with and what would you want to do?
DANA: I think it would be a toss-up between Emma of The Wallflower, Belle of Steel Beauty, and Jaden of Noble Blood. All three in the same room would be apocalyptically awesome.
Seriously. The world would probably end if the three of them were in the same room together.

Q8):  What are the best and worst parts of writing for you?

DANA: The best part is when the story is flowing, you’re cackling so hard the cats are looking at you funny, and you know it’s going just right. The worst part? It’s between writing a synopsis and figuring out when to stop self-editing and just send the damn thing in. Authors always second-guess themselves, so forcing myself to stop fixing what isn’t broken can be difficult.

Q9):  What’s a typical work day like for you?  Do you have a routine; is there something that you absolutely have to have with you to get through your day & get the creative juices flowing, do you have any interesting writing quirks, etc?
DANA: My day starts by getting my kids off to school, chatting a bit with my husband and taking a nap. I don’t always sleep well at night, so I’ve found taking a nap during the day helps. I get up, chat with Dusty some more, then turn on my music and make with the writing.
Each book has a unique playlist, and if the song pulls me out of the story it’s immediately deleted and replaced with something else. I put on sound-dampening headphones and rock out to whatever music the characters want. It gets so bad Dusty has to use Google Talk just to get my attention.

Q10):  What type of scenes do you enjoy writing the most (action, love, dialogue, etc)?

DANA: Dialogue! I love it when my characters start chatting with one another. There’s a flow to it that just feels natural. After that would probably be love scenes. I find them much easier to write than action, which is the hardest for me to write. However, I have found a fix for that. There’s nothing quite like looking up martial arts fights on YouTube to get you in the mood for a face pounding.

Q11):  What are some of your favorite TV Shows and movies?
DANA: Castle, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Project Runway, Dr. Who (the 11th), Firefly and Property Brothers. Some of my favorite movies are Bell Book and Candle, The Desk Set, True Lies, Beauty and the Beast, The Haunting (1999 version) and Arsenic and Old Lace.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  O.K, now we’ll ask some questions directly related to “Howl for Me”, the TRUE DESTINY series, and your other work.

Q12):  Was there any specific inspiration that lead to the concept and creation of the TRUE DESTINY series?
DANA: Loki was my primary inspiration. I loved reading Greek and Norse mythology when I was a teen, and I kept coming back to Loki, the poster boy for the red-headed step-child. It occurred to me, as I was rereading the myths as an adult, that the whole “Loki killed Baldur” thing was a set-up. Loki can’t fly without a magical feather cloak, so how did he turn into a bird and fly away from his pursuers? Deeper research reminded me that Odin’s pet birds are ravens, the exact bird Loki was said to have turned into. Add in that Odin was also known as a god of lies and trickery and was also a shapeshifter, and you have one hell of a conspiracy theory. Or, if you’re the Aesir, a hell of a coincidence.
I went with door number one, declared Loki the fall guy, and True Destiny was born.

Q13):  How many books do you have planned for the series?
DANA: Right now, as of last count, there are eight total until Odin, aka Oliver Grimm, gets his Ragnarrok. Still to come are Morgan, Magnus, Val, Ryker Saeter (Jormungandr, the last of Logan’s children) and Nik. I’m tempted to do Sleipnir; in fact, I have an idea for Odin’s eight-legged horse, but I’ll have to see if that pans out. And Hel, Logan’s daughter, will be a free Christmas read, as she’s gotten her HEA and doesn’t know it yet. You’ll meet her for the first time in Morgan’s Fate, the fourth True Destiny book.

Q14):  What can we expect as the series progresses?
DANA:  Magic and mayhem, of course. Grimm’s power base will be slowly chipped away, and the end he thought he would meet won’t be quite what he expects. As we see a lot in mythology, prophecy is self-fulfilling…

Q15):  What were some of the challenges (research, literary, psychological, logistical, etc) in bringing the TRUE DESTINY series to life?

DANA: The Prose and Poetic Eddas, and trying to make those prophecies match my version of events (or not, as the case may be). Remember, the Norse Gods only have these prophecies to determine their destinies, and the prophecies were relayed from the Norns of Fate by Odin. It’s not like he had an incentive to, ya know, lie or anything.
We’ll learn as time goes on that not all is as it seems, and sometimes prophecy is what you make of it. That is why I named the series True Destiny.

Q16):  Congratulations on “Artistic Vision” coming to Print this October!  How many books do you have planned for the GRAY COURT series?
DANA: Right now, the Gray Court series is open-ended. It will end when I feel like it’s come to a natural conclusion, and right now there are a lot more stories to tell. Robin, Oberon, Raven MacSweeney, Red the gremlin, Alex Mallebron, Tristan Malmayne…
(hint: If Titannia dies, odds are good the series will be over, if not in that book then very soon after.)

Q17):  Do you have any more books planned for HALLE PUMAS, or are you just going to continue with the HALLE SHIFTERS?  What can we expect as the HALLE SHIFTERS series progresses?
DANA:  The Halle Pumas series is complete. I had only five books planned out for them, to get the core hierarchy in place (Alpha, Beta, Marshall and Omega), plus I wanted Belle to have an HEA and introduce the Poconos Pack. I’ll be concentrating on the Halle Shifters, as more and more shifters move to Halle to deal with… Hmm. Better not say. That might spoil it.
No, I’m not a tease. I put out.

Q18):  What else is in the works for Dana Marie Bell outside of the 3 things we covered in the Intro?
DANA: I’m working on a series about half-angels called The Nephilim. No home for it yet, but I’ve sent it in to one of my publishing houses and have my fingers crossed.
Also, the Heart’s Desire series has been picked up by Samhain, giving my Beckett brothers a new home! I don’t have a release date for books one and two, but I know the general plot of book three. It’s meant to be a four-part series, unless people request more books set in that world. Then I might be open to continuing it.
Last, as soon as I’m done working on Robin Goodfellow’s book for the Gray Court, I’m going to be working on book two of the Maggie’s Grove series. Throne of Oak will be Mina and Dragos’s story, and dealing with a past that comes back to haunt our dear mayor and the aftermath of Mina’s torture at the hands of Terri.

Q19):  Is there a question that you have always wanted to be asked in an interview but have never been asked?  How would you answer that question?

DANA: I’ve been asked most of the “serious author” questions, so I’ll go with something silly:
Question: Oreos or squeezy cheese?
Answer: Depends. Is it cheddar squeezy cheese? And are there Ritz crackers? If not, I say Oreos. Unless there’s no milk. Then I’m back to squeezy cheese. Unless it’s the icky American squeezy cheese…
This is a debate that could rage for hours, especially if someone brings that dark horse, chocolate covered pretzels, into it.

Q20):  Would you like to say anything else to your readers while we have you here today?
DANA: Due to my arthritis, I don’t answer every email sent to me. I can’t. My fingers would fall off, and then where would we all be? So check my blog ( and my website ( for answers to your questions. If you can’t find it there, then please write to me. I will try and answer it, if not in a direct email then on one or both of the above. Or, if you see me at a convention or a book signing, feel free to chat me up. I could talk the ear off a saint. I’ll be the little redhead in the mobility scooter, with the license plate that says “My other ride is a Firefly”.
