Interview and Contest with Stephanie Tyler

Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION  are honored to welcome Stephanie Tyler back to our sites today!

Stephanie is a bestselling writer of over 20 amazing titles. We say “writer” and not author because that is what she calls herself. Some may think that’s strange, but we get it. It’s the part she loves, it’s what she does, and therefore makes her what she is. She says she was born a writer, that she always knew it’s what she wanted to do, and took every step necessary to make it happen. She double majored in English Lit and Creative Writing, went back to get her Masters in English Lit and Secondary English Education, and even went so far as to get ½ of her PhD. She worked as a manager in a book store while going to school, and ended up teaching both at the middle school and college level afterward until family took precedence. Once that happened, she was able to really start writing, no longer having to split her creative focus between her students and herself, and she hasn’t stopped since.
It took Stephanie four years and 10 manuscripts before she got her first sales call, but after that, things happened fast and furiously. Within the span of a year, she was offered contracts for 11 books and just three years later hit the New York Times Best Seller list with “Hold on Tight”.
Stephanie is the creator of the SEAL and SHADOW FORCE series, as well as the HOLD trilogy. Her new series, ETERNAL WOLF CLAN, just debuted at the beginning of this month, with the first book in the series, “Dire Needs” getting rave reviews.
She is also ½ of the literary duo that make up Sydney Croft, the author of the ACRO series (the other ½ of which being Larissa Ione).
We’re here today to help Stephanie promote and celebrate the new ETERNAL WOLF CLAN series and “Dire Needs”, but please check out her website for additional information, synopses, and reviews for all of the books and series mentioned above and more:
For those of you not yet familiar with Stephanie’s new Paranormal Romance series, we wanted to give you the synopsis for "Dire Warning" (the "Dire Needs" prequel novella) and “Dire Needs” to peak your interests.

“Dire Warning”

A breathtaking new tale of the Dire Wolves, from the bestselling author of Dire Needs…

Immortal and invincible, Rifter is the head of the last surviving pack of Dire Wolves—a band of Alpha brothers charged with protecting the Weres. But now that witches have joined forces with nefarious weretrappers, it’s a perfect storm for double trouble. When the murder of a human points to a wolf, along with the threat of the packs being outted to the world, the Dires fear that something even more dangerous is out there hiding in the dark, something waiting for the right time to show itself.

Includes a letter from the author and a teaser chapter from Dire Needs.

“Dire Needs”

The full moon is their mistress. They are predators of pleasure and pain. Feared by humans, envied by werewolves, the Dire Wolves are immortal shifters, obeying no laws but their own bestial natures. Once they were many, but now only six remain, a dangerous wolfpack forever on the hunt…

Rifter leads the pack, embracing the lifestyle and ethics of an outlaw biker even as he battles an ancient enemy who has become a new, powerful force. But with his Brother Wolf raging inside him, howling to be unleashed, he needs to satisfy his hungers. And when he meets a drop-dead gorgeous blonde drinking alone in a bar that caters to both human and inhuman, Rifter’s primal instinct is to claim her.
Gwen has her own desires, long unfulfilled. She hopes a passionate night with the leather-clad, Harley-riding biker will ease her suffering. The seizures that have wracked her body her entire life are incurable—and they’re killing her.

But none of that will matter if Rifter can’t stop the growing threat to them all–trappers who are determined to enslave humankind and use the Dire wolves as part of their nefarious plan.

Uh huh, we know, you’re hunting them down from your favorite book-seller as we speak, but what do you say we get to the interview and find out what Stephanie’s been up to since we last spoke and find out some more about this remarkable new book and series?

LIVE CHAT, DON'T FORGET:  Stephanie will be available to chat Live with members, followers, fans and guests in the LITERAL ADDICTION Author Chatroom from 4-5pm EST on Saturday 3/31.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Hi Stephanie!  We’re honored to have you back with us today.  Congratulations on the release of “Dire Needs” and the incredible buzz it’s been getting.
STEPHANIE: Thank you!  And thanks for hosting me again – thrilled to be back!!!

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Like usual, we’ll start out by getting to know you a little bit better (all different questions than last time we promise!) and then we’ll dig into talk of the new release and series…

Q1): If you were told the world was going to end in 24 hours, what would you do with your remaining time on Earth?
STEPHANIE: Spend it cuddling with Zoo and the kids.  And the dog.

Q2):  What are 3 things that always make you smile?
STEPHANIE:  The above mentioned family.  The start of a new story.  Any rerun of Supernatural.

Q3):  What are some of your hobbies and/or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?
STEPHANIE:  I’m a TV person – I love bad reality TV so much.  Also, I like to get hooked on shows that last more than a single season, so I an buy the DVDs and watch the entire season (or two or three) in a row, because I love instant gratification.  Otherwise, I’d have to say listening to music, going to concerts, hanging with family and friends, because I never seem to get enough time.  I write a lot – and a lot of the time, so my free time is really limited.  And I’m okay with that, since I truly love my job.

Q4):  If you could have a super power, what would you want it to be and why?
STEPHANIE:  Invisibility!  How cool would that be?  Maybe I have it already and I’m standing behind you?  Come on, admit it, you turned to look, right?  But you wouldn’t see me – Ha!
Ahem.  So yes, invisibility.

Q5):  Are there any authors and/or titles that you feel have inspired your writing career?
STEPHANIE: For sure – Cherry Adair’s Kiss & Tell saved me something fierce.  I reread that book a million times when my daughter was in Cincinnati Childrens Hospital for like 3 months.  In the beginning, Zoo and I would swap nights staying with her at the hospital, and I can still picture the hotel room – I’d go there and get into bed and just read that book.  It helped me escape and not obsess on the fact that I wasn’t with her, you know?  Gone With The Wind is another book I adore  - I reread it all the time.

Q6):  With Fantasy being such a popular genre these days, what made you choose it, and what about it fascinates you personally?
STEPHANIE: Well, I’ve been writing it since I’ve been published – co-writing it as Sydney Croft with Larissa Ione, so I’ve always been drawn to it.  I especially love the idea of ghosts and other beings – I have forever.  Larissa and I are always threatening to go on a ghost hunt – how cool would that be?  So it seemed natural that when the ACRO series ended for me to write some PNR.  I knew I’d miss it.

Q7):  What is a typical writing day like for you?  Do you have a routine that you follow?  Are there specific things that you have to have with you to get the creative juices flowing, etc?
STEPHANIE: I don’t have a certain number of pages I write per day or anything like that – I wish I could, but structure and writing have never worked for me, even though I’m extremely structured in most other aspects of life.  So basically, when my child care arrives around 8M, I head upstairs and either sleep or read.  I’ll get real life stuff done if necessary, and then, by about two PM or so, I feel the writing pulling at me.  Sometimes it’s sooner, and I’ll start scratching away in my notebook.  But by that point, I’ve been thinking about the writing for hours, and for me, that’s half the battle.  I have to think – see the book happening in my head before it’s on the page.  That also happens when I’m on the treadmill, listening to my music at the loudest possible volume.
Typically, I’m working on several projects at once, all in various stages (maybe a proposal, a contracted full and revisions or something…) Usually, I avoid the computer for as long as I can, and I write longhand.  And then when I finally turn to the computer, I type in what I’ve got, add, etc.
If I’m on deadline, I’m usually up writing early.  But since I typically go to bed at some point after 2AM, and it’s inevitable a child will get up at some point during the night (and they’re up at 6AM anyway), now you see why I catch a couple hours sleep in the morning if I can.  I have turned around days and nights.

Q8):  Was there any specific inspiration behind the creation of the ETERNAL WOLF CLAN series?
STEPHANIE:  There were a couple – my daughter, for one.  She has seizures.  And if you haven’t read the book, then I don’t want to spoil it for you, but I kind of came up with the basic idea when doing seizure research.
Spoiler:  In the Middle Ages, they thought that seizures were the sign that someone was a werewolf.  And I said to Zoo, that’s way better than having epilepsy.
My other inspiration was Twilight.  Because dammit, I thought Bella should’ve picked the wolf!

Q9):  How many books do you have planned for the series?
STEPHANIE: I have three books contracted, but in my mind I’ve got up to five or six planned out.  There are lots of characters floating around in the world and I hope to be able to bring them all to you.

Q10):  What can we expect as the series progresses?
STEPHANIE: I’ll be picking up a lot of threads from book one – there will be more about Liam and the twins (Weres) and the Dire brothers will continue to be very involved with one another.  Their compound will grown – and their family will be a mix of blood relations and friends – and that’s something I always love, because I think that’s very true to life.

Q11):  We know this is like asking you who your favorite child is, but do you have a Dire brother that you lean towards as your favorite?
STEPHANIE:  Well, Vice is definitely my favorite to write, because he says whatever the hell he wants.  But I think, at this point, I’ve got a real soft spot for Rogue.  And for Cain, although he’s a Were.  OMG – wait until you see what Cain does…oh, wait, spoiler.  Sorry – you’ll have to keep reading…

Q12):  What were some of the challenges (research, literary, psychological, logistical, etc) in bringing “Dire Needs” to life?
STEPHANIE: It’s always a challenge to start a new world – and this was a big ship to steer.  Lots of world building that had to get woven in, because all the brothers are involved from the start.  There’s always a balance between too much and not enough and it’s never perfect.  I love multiple povs, so that wasn’t a problem at all – but really, you’ve got to have three books at least semi-outlined because you can’t go back and change the plot in a published book.  So what I started in book 1 would have to make sense going into books 2 & 3.

Q13):  What about the book are you the most proud of?
STEPHANIE:  I love the way the Dire brothers get along – I love their interaction, their banter, the fact that they’re all so different.  They’re a world into themselves and so you’ve got Gwen really coming in and needed to be accepted by all of them – and I think the family aspect really came through.

Q14):  What else is in the works for Stephanie Tyler?  Do you have any collaborations, anthology installments, signings, conventions, etc coming up that your readers and fans should know about?
STEPHANIE: I’m actually just about finished for revisions for book 2 – Dire Wants comes out November 6th.  And then, I just signed
to do an especial for Shadow Force book 5 – Reid and Grier’s story!  I’d promised readers I’d get to tell their story in some way, shape or form and I’m thrilled that NAL is helping me do so. That long novella will come out in March 2013, followed in April by book 1 in my new RS series, called Section 8.  So 2013 will have 2 RS books, the 3rd Dire book, a novella and who knows what else!  So far, no
cons for me this year – but I’m already (obviously) thinking into 2013, so I’ll keep everyone up to date on my website.

Q15):  Is there anything special you would like to say to your readers while we have you here today?
STEPHANIE: You know, I love my readers.  They make my day with their emails and facebook posts – it’s seriously one of the best parts of my job, along with the actual creating.  You have no idea how much those emails or quick posts mean to me.  So I truly thank you for all the support.
