Guset Post & Return Appearance with Jessa Slade

Happy Thursday Monsters and Addicts.  Today we have the awesome Jessa Slade taking over the reigns at Book Monster and LITERAL ADDICTION.

Before Jessa takes over we wanted to make sure ya'll are aquainted with her, so we posted her bio and some info about her MARKED SOUL series below.  Enjoy the post and make sure to check out the series.  Its made of awesomeness!!

AND -   DON'T FORGET:  Jessa will be chatting with us LIVE over in the LITERAL ADDICTION Chatroom from 8:00 - 9:00pm EST (7 - 8pm CT and 5 - 6pm MDT & PDT) and we hope ya'll can drop by to say hello.

Despite a grade school career aptitude test that indicated farming would be her best bet, Jessa always knew she wanted to be a writer.  Her early works include “MY POMES,” a poetry chapbook rampant with unicorns and misspellings, and a torrid teen cowboy romance which her editor-mother asked her to revise and resubmit, changing the love scene to “soul mates.”

After close to a million final draft words and nearly triple digit rejections, she sold her first novel, an urban fantasy romance, thanks to the 2007 Rose City Romance Writers’ Golden Rose writing contest.  She still pinches herself daily.

She lives in the Pacific Northwest where the potential for up to 120 days in a row of measurable precipitation keeps her at her computer (well, that and the chains).  Like many writers, she lives often in her head and appreciates interaction with people whose dialogue she doesn’t have to make up and revise for clarity.

Jessa is the creator of Urban Fantasy Romance series the MARKED SOULS, which currently has 3 books in the series, Book #1 - "Seduced by Shadows", Book #2 - "Forged in Shadows" and Book #3 - "Vowed in Shadows".The fourth book in the series, "Darkness Undone" is scheduled to release on March 6, 2012.

Now that you are more familair with Jessa and her books, I'm going to let Jessa take over now.  Show her some BMR and L.A. love and don't forget to leave questions in the comment section for her so she can answer them throughout the day.

JESSA SLADE

Many writers talk about how their stories unspool in their heads like movies. They say all they have to do is transcribe the images. And then presumably wait for Hollywood to come buy the rights and turn the words back into pictures.
Must be nice. I am NOT one of those writers. My stories tend to come to me in word form, much as I pass them to you. Maybe that’s why one of my favorite passages from the Bible is (loosely translated) “In the beginning was the Word.”

Okay, yes, I’m being a little grandiose, what with comparing myself to God and all, but I am the creator of my little storyworld. And in the beginning of my world is the words.

But I also respect the power of images. I know the allure of a bold hero cover. (Looking at you, Sid!) I’m a part-time photographer in my day job and snap a photo here and there for fun, so I know images have their place. Still, I didn’t make much use of imagery until I started watching the special features on movie DVDs. I especially enjoyed the extras on The Lord of the Rings movies. Wow, the thought and love that went into those movies. And don’t get me revved up about The Hobbit or we’ll be here all day. But I was really intrigued by the storyboarding. And I thought maybe I should get Peter Jackson’s work started for him, so when he comes calling for the Marked Souls novels as his next epic masterpiece, I’ll be ready for him. Or Joss Whedon, whoever gets to me first.

So the next time someone suggested making a collage for a story, I didn’t sneer. Instead, I got out my scissors and glue. Now I make a collage for every story. I used to use a big sheet of poster board, but those get hard to store without finding little pieces of sticky magazine words stuck to the dog like a walking canine kidnapping billboard. I’ve switched to manila file folders. The folders are small, portable, and fold neatly away when I’m done with them.

But this time, I got halfway done with my collage when I heard about Pinterest. I love being able to mix words and images in my magazine cut’n’paste collages, but Pinterest is a cool tool in its own right. The ability to tag back to original content so I can keep track of visuals that inspired me is spectacular. Also, way less glue sniffing involved.

Here is my Pinterest “board” and relevant “pins” for DARKNESS UNDONE:

As you might notice, I still manage to find a way to sneak the words in. A picture might be worth a thousand words, but the right picture can inspire one hundred thousand words!

How about you? Do you like having images to go with your words? What do you think about “enhanced ebooks” with pictures, sounds, and scratch-and-sniff? (Okay, I made up that last part, but give it another few years and I’m sure we’ll have that too.) Or do you prefer to read books the way God intended: in black and white?

The MARKED SOULS series

*       *       *

The war between good and evil has raged for millennia,
and as a powerful new enemy ascends,
the Marked Souls are pushed to the ragged edge…

"Darkness Undone"
Book 4 in THE MARKED SOULS series
Coming March 6, 2012

Sidney Westerbrook has always studied darkness and damnation from a sensible distance. Now, to earn his place as a league Bookkeeper, he must discover why Chicago is such a battleground of soul-linked warriors. But the research becomes personal when he finds himself over his head and under attack — and at the mercy of a waif with demon-lit eyes and a deep yearning in her heart.

Alyce Carver has been alone longer than she can remember, battered by the living nightmares that haunt her city. Cornered by yet another gang of demons, she unwittingly joins forces with a handsome scholar who can salvage her past, and she in turn may be the key to his investigations. But she won’t let him go until he shows her everything she’s been missing.

What begins as an experiment in possession becomes a trial by desire so powerful it threatens both their lives, even as it binds their souls.

“Slade’s plot packs plenty of action…in a group of forceful personalities.”
– Publishers Weekly

“[A] fish-out-of-water story that keeps a rapid pace, delivering a strong plot, enjoyable characters and a stunning world.”

The inside of the book has to be black and white, no pictures. The cover, on the other hand, like yours should be lickable (and waterproof)! Maybe that will happen in the NEAR future!!

I really like this cover. It's funny but when I see tats like that I can't help but think it would really hurt in that lat muscle area to tattoo there. I love Sue's comment that the cover should be water proof ;).
Thanks for the download.

When I read stories they play out like a movie in my head. But I like the good old fashioned black and white books but enhanced ebooks sound cool for a added bonus. Thanks for the awesome giveaway, good luck everyone:)

Hi Jessa! I absolutely love the series and can't wait to read Darkness Undone. I am the good old fashioned black & white type. I personally like to make up my own images in my head. Thanks for the great interview and giveaway! bpatrick64113@sbcglobal.net

Sue, I can't wait until they invent real lickable covers. My guys would all taste like chocolate :)

Victoria, I hope you like the download!

Sienny, poor paranormal romance heroes get tattooed all over. I wonder how many cover artists have tattoos...

Miki, I usually do international giveaways. It's expensive, but my Zimbabwe readers deserve a chance to win. Uh, not that I HAVE Zimbabwe readers, but if I did...

Amanda, Orlando was so fun, but I would like to try to go back to Opryland again. That hotel looked amazing.

Jbon, thanks for stopping by!

Tina, lucky girl. Maybe I should watch more movies to get more visual in my head. Luckily, this year has some great movies coming up.

Andie, I hope my black & white words translate to cool images in your head :) That's MY job.

Kandj, I'm thrilled you like the Marked Souls! Words like that are writer soulfood :)

Evan, my cover artist does a lot of great work. He obviously loves his job.

Laurie, thanks for dropping in.

Proserpine, hey you :) I'm so glad you've liked the books. Hope you like the next one too!

Merisha, that is my dastardly plan with posting here: to tempt you into getting hooked!

Barb, I think a good imagination stretching is a great thing. Can we count it as exercise? ;)

Great interview. I like my books to be printed in black and white, the cover is enough fanciness for me. I don't care about any other enhancements. I've been hearing a lot about Pinterest, but I haven't checked it out yet. It looks like it's a perfect fit for an author.

I am going to have to be honest and say images help. I can think of how much I like the few special publications that Kelley Armstrong has put out with the artwork per chapter that really brings home the story. Artist and author can make a great team. I love print books, pages between my fingers. I do own a kindle fire for those authors who publish the e-book only stories, but my life is always plugged in, and I like to relaxed unplugged. No sound please, ugh. Covers are just fun if they match the story and the characters. I love certain cover artists. sdylion(at)gmail(dot)com

LOVE Pics!! Could be either ereader or paperback!!

Jessa Slade said...

Elaing8, Pinterest is addictive fun. It's the patchwork effect of all the pictures that caught me.

Barbara E, too many bells & whistles distract me, that's why I like my books plain. Non-fiction enhanced ebooks could be cool though.

Jessa Slade said...

Sdylion, I guess I have to admit, too, that I love maps in the first pages of a book. Especially fantasy maps. I studied the Tolkien maps for hours.

Liesa, another vote for pretty pix :) Fair enough.

I've been hearing so much about Pinterest and it looks like I need to check it out soon. I love book covers and this may help me appreciate them more.

I prefer just black and white words but I do like trying new things and would be interested in at least trying an enhanced ebook. I wouldn't want the pictures to distract me from the story itself though.

Thanks so much for the free copy of the HOTTER ON THE EDGE anthology. Those books covers are pretty awesome! & yes I love that tat too (pun!!) I wouldn't say it's worth a thousand words tho; more like it's leaving us totally speechless! (mouth agape or drooling...lols)

I've love a copy! Thanks so much for the opportunity to win.

Jessa Slade said...

Na, I'm sure as publishing evolves we'll have the chance to try out more enhanced books and see what we really think.

Linda, drooling is always a good sign! For bold hero covers anyway.

Hi Jessa! Sorry I didn't make it to the chat I have been under the weather the last few days and have just want to sleep.
I wouldn't mind pictures of the hot heroes mixed in with my ebooks but I could do without the scratch and sniff.

Thanks for the giveaway!

JoAnna, we missed you at the chat. Glad to see you here tho! What? You wouldn't want "the scent of a man" in your romances? Maybe if it's the Old Spice man ;)
