Return Appearance w/ Shannon K. Butcher

Shannon K. Butcher
Return Appearance Interview Intro:

Good morning Literal Addicts and Book Monsters!  LITERAL ADDICTION and Book Monster Reviews are VERY happy to welcome Shannon K Butcher back to our sites today!

As a little girl, Shannon never wanted to write.  When asked what she wanted to be, she’d say she wanted to be a daddy.  After she learned the biological impossibility of that happening, she decided instead to become what her dad was: an Industrial Engineer. So, that’s what she did.  She faithfully stuck to it, and after she graduated, she went to work for a big telecom company earning a steady paycheck while her husband pursued his dream of becoming a published author.

For those of you who might not know, Shannon’s husband is Jim Butcher, fantasy and sci-fi author extraordinaire.  Shannon learned to write in an effort to help him improve his own work, and as soon as she discovered that writing was more a learned skill than a natural talent, she knew she had to give it a try.  The challenge of taking bits and pieces of a story and putting it together was more than she could resist.  It was actually exactly the kind of puzzle that made her want to become an engineer.  So, she thought she’d try her hand at what her husband did, and after picking up her first romance in 1998, she was hooked, and decided to write romance herself.

Shannon comes from an entire family of what she calls ‘geeks’.  Shannon and Jim live in Missouri with their teenage son and a dog whom is only one four-foot stick away from being a dust mop.

Shannon is the esteemed creator of the EDGE, DELTA FORCE and SENTINAL WARS series.  Her latest release, “Bound by Vengeance”, Book #5.5 of the SENTINAL WARS series was just released in eBook format, giving us SENTINAL WARS groupies a little teaser until “Dying Wish” , Book #6, comes out on 3/6/12.

For those of you new to Shannon and her work, we thought we’d give you the synopses for the books in the SENTINAL WARS series to peak your interests a bit, though we highly suggest that you check out her ENTIRE backlist.  You can find all of the info HERE.
SENTINAL WARS

“Burning Alive”
SENTINAL WARS - Book #1:

They are the Sentinels...

Three races descended from ancient guardians of mankind, each possessing unique abilities in their battle to protect humanity against their eternal foes-the Synestryn. Now, one warrior must fight his own desire if he is to discover the power that lies within his one true love...

Helen Day is haunted by visions of herself surrounded by flames, as a dark-haired man watches her burn. So when she sees the man of her nightmares staring at her from across a diner, she attempts to flee-but instead ends up in the man's arms. There, she awakens a force more powerful and enticing than she could ever imagine. For the man is actually Theronai warrior Drake, whose own pain is driven away by Helen's presence.

Together, they may become more than lovers-they may become a weapon of light that could tip the balance of the war and save Drake's people...

“Finding the Lost”
SENTINAL WARS Book #2:

Sentinel warrior Paul has been searching for centuries for a woman like Andra. To find her, he strikes a bargain with a bloodhunter that could cost him his life. Now, his desire for Andra threatens to destroy his much-needed control. Against her wishes, Andra agrees to join Paul on a journey fraught with danger- and leading directly to the Synestryn who victimized her family eight years ago.

“Running Scared”
SENTINAL WARS Book #3:

Lexi Johns has one purpose: to free her best friend from the hands of the Sentinels. And the Sentinel she has been running from for months, Zach, has one goal: to convince her that their destinies are entwined. For the magic that Zach has absorbed could destroy him if he doesn't find the woman to channel it for him. And he knows Lexi is the one...

“On the Hunt”
Anthology including SENTINAL WARS story #3.5:

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter, Shannon K. Butcher, Jessica Anderson, and Deidre Knight present a steamy collection of all-new novellas featuring sexy paranormal hunters.
With shadowy creatures, intoxicating magic, vivdly imagined worlds, and sizzling passion, this is an anthology no fan of paranormal romance will want to miss.

“Living Nightmare”
SENTINAL WARS Book #4:

For nine years, the Sentinel Nika has had one goal-to save her younger sister from the Synestryn who hold her captive. Now, the psychic bond Nika forged with her sibling on that terrible night is fading, and time is running out. But the one man who can unlock the power inside her may be the greatest danger to her.

“Blood Hunt”
SENTINAL WARS Book #5:

Hope appeared out of nowhere, naked and alone, a woman without a past. The only thing she knows is that she is imbued with a strange power. It's in her blood. And two men want to posses it. One is Logan, a Sanguiner demon-fighter who needs Hope's essence to survive. The other is Krag, a Synestryn lord whose desire is to enslave Hope, and drain her of the lifeforce. When Hope and Logan both fall prey to Krag, a powerful desire grows between them. But is it enough to thwart their captor's diabolical plan and his demon warriors, and survive a vampire's destiny written in blood?

“Bound by Vengeance”
SENTINAL WARS story #5.5:

The guilt that Defender Dakota Kacey feels about her brother’s death is all-consuming, making her determined to find and kill the demon who murdered him. But the leader of the Defenders is worried about what Dakota is capable of, and calls in Liam Lann to keep an eye on her. Dakota knows what kind of power a Theronai like Liam possesses, and agrees to bind herself to him if he’ll help her exact vengeance. But a bond to a Theronai is not a decision to make lightly, and as the search for the killer intensifies, Dakota will have to learn to trust Liam completely, or risk losing everything.

 “Dying Wish”
SENTINAL WARS Book #5:
Coming March 6, 2012

Jackie Patton has been rescued by the Theronai from her captivity and torture at the hands of the Synestryn, only to learn that she’s a potential match for the Theronai warriors who need a woman to literally save their lives.

Forced to choose, she unexpectedly selects Iain, a cold-hearted warrior who doesn’t want to be saved. Iain is convinced that it’s too late—that his soul is already as dead as his former betrothed, killed by the Synestryn. Still, he is the only man Jackie feels a measure of peace around and the only one she wants. But is Iain indeed beyond saving?

So, now that we have all of you new readers bombarding your favorite online booksellers trying to download and/or order these, and have successfully reminded all of us veterans why we love these books so much, what do you say we get to the interview and find out what Shannon’s been up to since we talked to her last?

Shannon K. Butcher
Return Appearance Interview

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Hi Shannon, welcome back!  As always, we’re incredibly happy to have you with us today.  Thank you so much for taking time away from your busy schedule again to chat with us.
Shannon: Thanks so much for having me back! It’s always great to have the chance to chat with fellow readers.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  We asked you most of our good ice breaker questions last time, but we have a few more and then we’ll get to talking about the new releases…
Q1): If you were told the world was going to end tomorrow, what would you do in your last 24 hrs?
Shannon: I’d probably spend it around the gaming table with close friends and family, laughing away the end of the world.

Q2):  What’s your guilty pleasure?
Shannon: Neil Diamond. And really bad sci-fi movies—the cheesier, the better.

Q3):   If you were to write an autobiography, what do you think it’d be called?
Shannon: Onward!!!

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  O.K, now let’s find out some more about these 2 amazing new releases.
Q4):  For those of us that have not gotten to it yet, can you tell us a little bit more about “Bound by Vengeance” and its place in the SENTINAL WARS series?
Shannon: BBV is one of those smaller stories that I probably would never have been able to find the space to tell if not for having the chance to do the Penguin eSpecial. It falls after BLOOD HUNT and right before DYING WISH.
Liam answers a call for help from the head of the Defenders, and in doing so meets Dakota, who will stop at nothing to avenge her brother’s death. Together, they go hunting the demons who killed her brother, and Liam learns that she is one of the rare women who has the power to stop the death of his soul.

Q5):  Dying Wish” features Iain and Jackie.  How did it feel getting their story out there?  Did you encounter any surprises while writing their tale?
Shannon: This was one of those stories that just kinda fell out of me. I’d been looking forward to this book for years, and was really pleased with the way it came out. Since the world of the Sentinels is so complex, the most surprising thing is how easy it was to write. And as always, I’ve continued past storylines and laid the groundwork for future books.

Q6):  You had told us before that you were contracted for 9 SENTINAL WARS installments.  Is that still true?  What can we look forward to in the next few books?
Shannon: Yes, that’s still true. I’ve already written book 7, tentatively titled BLINDING LIGHT. This is Cain’s story, and I’ve paired him with Rory (who was a riot to write!) from book 5, BLOOD HUNT. I plan to write stories for Torr and Joseph soon. And if I get the chance, I’d love to do more novella length works so that those little stories in my head can also see the light of day.

Q7):  There’s another EDGE book coming out later this year correct?  Can you tell us any more about that?
Shannon: Yes, Edge #3 will be out toward the end of 2012. It’s titled EDGE OF SANITY and is my favorite of the series so far. Clay has been experiencing blackouts and lost time for a while, but when he wakes up covered in blood with no idea of how it got there, he knows he needs help. That help comes in the form of Dr. Leigh Vaughn. Together, they uncover the reason for his blackouts and with it, a larger, terrifying plot.

Q8):  When we hosted you last, you were very excited about jumping into the planning phases of the new series that you hoped to unleash on the world.  Can you tell us any more about it, i.e what type of series, how’s it going, when you think it might become reality, etc?
Shannon: I’m not yet ready to talk about that yet, but I just finished the first book a couple of days ago. And that’s all I’m saying.

Q9):   Do you have anything else going on that your readers need to know about – i.e big contests, appearances, signings, etc?
Shannon: I do a monthly contest in which I usually give away a signed book and a piece of beaded or glass jewelry that I’ve made. I also have several public appearances planned for the year, including stops in St. Louis, Chicago, Kansas City, Cincinnati, and Gatlinburg, TN. For more details, you can check out my website: http://www.shannonkbutcher.com/

Q10):  Any new beading/glass blowing/crafty things you have going on right now that your fans can take advantage of?
Shannon: Yes! Every month I host a contest on my website with some of my crafty creations. It’s a great way to give myself an excuse to take time away from work and play with sparkly bits of colored glass.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Thank you so much Shannon.  As always, it’s been an absolute pleasure, and we can’t wait to chat with you Live a little bit later tonight!  We’re so excited to have “Bound by Vengeance” in our hot little hands and CANNOT wait for “Dying Wish”.  We’ll be spreading the word like crazy.  We’d love to have you back later this year for the new EDGE release if you’re interested.

Shannon: Thanks so much! I’d love to come back. See you tonight at the chat!

DON’T FORGET:  Shannon will be available to chat Live with members, followers, fans and guests in the LITERAL ADICTION Author Chatroom from 8:00 – 9:00pm Eastern (7-8pm Central/5-6pm Pacific & Mountain) 2/21/12.

I had no idea Shannon was Jim Butcher's wife. I've read most of his books, which are great, and that makes me even more interested in her's.

I think I need to start with the first book so please don't enter me in the contest.

I first got my hands on your series when I read the little novella in On The Hunt. LOVED IT! Went out and scooped up the first three right away. I have managed to read the first one and found it just as amazing. I am always looking for a completely new take on paranormal and you knocked it out of the ballpark. Hope to get time soon to read the rest.

Iain sounds like a really tortured hero and I love those. I like seeing how the heroines "melt" the hero's "ice" and make the heroes love again. Would love to read Dying Wish!

I really like the cover for Dying Wish. It's my first time seeing it. It does seem like the world your characters live in are complex but I like that and hope to "visit" it soon.
