Q&A Interview and Giveaway with Cindy Gerard

Cindy Gerard Interview

Hello Book Monsters and Literal Addicts!  Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are very pleased to welcome author Cindy Gerard to our sites today.

Cindy Gerard is a NY Times bestselling author and a two time Rita Awards winner.  She is also the creator of the very popular, adrenaline packed romantic suspense series; BLACK OPS INC. and BODYGUARDS, as well as, a numerous amount of standalone novels.

Cindy wrote a bio for her website so we borrowed it and posted it here so you can learn a little more about her.

About Cindy:

When you check out my books page, you’ll see I wrote a number of category romances for Bantam’s Loveswept line and for Silhouette Desire before I took the plunge and started writing single title romantic suspense action adventures.  I’m loving the larger format which gives me the opportunity to create bigger, bolder, grittier novels.

Apparently, you all are loving it too.  Thanks to all of you who put me on the NEW YORK TIMES list with my Bodyguard Series (Click here to read more about the Bodyguards)  What a thrill to get the call!
In the meantime, a picture is worth a thousand words (bet you never heard THAT before, huh?) so for a little personal glimpse into my life, check out my photo page (Click here to see my photos).

During the course of my career, one thing has never changed.  Whether I’m speaking to a group or simply visiting with a reader, my most often asked question is: Where do you get your ideas? The truth is, I don’t always know. I realize that sounds strange but there it is. Sometimes a song will prompt a story. Sometimes a photograph or a scene in a movie. Most often, it’s the characters who first appear to me and once I know who they are, their story unfolds.

The only thing I do know is that since selling that first book, it’s been full speed ahead ever since and every day remains an adventure and a learning experience. I hope that never changes!

Cindy's books are filled with smokin' hot alpha males in the military, amazing storylines and of course…great romance.

The BODYGUARD series consists of six (6) novels; #1 - "To The Edge", #2 - "To The Limit", #3 - "To The Brink", #4 - "Over The Line", #5 - "Under The Wire", #6 - "Into The Dark" and one (1) anthology, "Rescue Me".

BLACK OPS INC. currently has six (6) novels; #1 - "Show No Mercy", #2-"Take No Prisoners", #3 - "Whisper No Lies", #4 - "Feel The Heat", #5 - "Risk No Secrets", #6 - "With No Remorse" and one (1) anthology, "Deadly Promises".  The seventh book in the series "Last Man Standing" will be released this coming Tuesday - January 31.

In case you're not familiar with these two amazing series, we've posted a few of the book synopses here for you to check out:

No assignment is too big, too difficult, or too dangerous for them to handle.
When it comes to their own personal relationships, however, the forces of E.D.E.N., Inc. soon find themselves in deep water and sinking fast.

"To The Edge" -BOGYGUARDS - Book 1

Nolan Garrett’s on a roll. For three months he’s managed to sustain a string of booze-soaked days and mercifully dreamless nights, searching for a comfort zone at the bottom of the barrel. Just when he thinks he’s getting close, life takes a turn for the worse and dumps him back into the thick of things.

He’s found a job. Or rather a job has found him.

      Job title: Bodyguard.

Objective: Keep Jillian Kincaid, the only child of one of the richest men in Palm Beach, Florida, alive.

Prospects: Not good for this ex-army Ranger who’s more interested in working on his own not-quite-subconscious death wish.

Jillian Kincaid doesn’t have a death wish. She’s got a life wish – to carry on with the one she’s built on her own, disconnected from her father’s power and wealth. She’s used brains, savvy and in-your-face determination to carve out a career in the highly competitive television news industry. And she’ll be damned if she’ll let a couple of death threats take it all away from her when she’s on a fast track to a cable network anchor. Duck and run? Not in this lifetime.

Only this lifetime is growing shorter and shorter for Jillian as a sick, sinister predator stalks her with only one purpose in mind. To see her dead.

"Into The Dark" -BOGYGUARDS - Book 6

Amy Walker endured unspeakable horrors while being held hostage in the Philippines before she was rescued by Dallas Garrett and his brothers from E.D.E.N., Inc. Amy is determined to leave the past behind…but only after she gets some answers to the questions that haunt her: Why was she abducted by the terrorists? Why is her mother locked up in a mental institution in upstate New York? Where is her grandfather and can he, alone, reveal the truth?
Dallas wants Amy to know he’s a man she can trust. He’s incapable of offering her his love but promises his sworn protection while she embarks on her quest to discover the truth about her family…and herself.
Working on a lead, Amy and Dallas travel to Argentina where they team up with an investigative journalist and an unlikely accomplice whose motives are as murky as his past. Soon they are drawn into the depths of a heinous secret organization that practices invasive, non-consensual mind-control experimentation—one that Amy’s grandfather appears to be involved in. With a ruthless enemy closing in fast Amy and Dallas race against time and risk their lives to expose these crimes against humanity…and share a passion neither of them could have expected.

"Show No Mercy" -

The sultry heat . . .

Only two things can compel journalist Jenna McMillan back to Buenos Aires after terrorists held her captive there just months before: a rare interview with a shadowy billionaire and the memory of the dark and dangerous man who saved her. . . .

      Hides the deadliest threats . . .

Bad guys, bombs, and bullets are Gabriel Jones’s way of life. But he’ll never forget the brash redhead he rescued not so long ago . . . or the passionate kiss they shared before he sent her packing.

And exposes the deepest desires. . . .

Now, forced together by a bombing at the National Congress, Jenna and Gabe confront the urgent longings that simmer between them. But this surprise meeting is no coincidence. A ruthless enemy stalks them with deadly precision. The question is . . . if they make it out alive, will Gabe turn his back on Jenna . . . again?

"With No Remorse" -

His quiet vacation in the Peruvian Andes turns deadly when a Black Ops, Inc. operative rescues a stunning stranger from a mysterious train robbery and discovers she’s the target of a vengeful manhunt.
For Luke Colter, down time is an illusion. He should know better than to ever leave his gun behind. Especially since he risks his life to save world-famous supermodel Valentina.
Val thought traveling incognito through the mountains would be the perfect cure for her bruised heart . . . until someone tries to kill her. Without knowing who is after her—and why—does she dare trust her irresistible protector?
Luke’s elite military training offers little defense against his feelings for Val. When his BOI team links her ruthless enemy to the cutthroat global weapons trade—and to a man from her troubled past—he’ll do anything to save her.  So when Val offers herself as bait, will he make the right call . . . or surrender to the hold she has on his heart?

"Last Man Standing" -

Don't they sound amazing!?  Now that we've totally teased you and have you adding these two incredible series to your TBR list, let's get to the interview so we can find out more about the amazing woman behind the books….

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hi Cindy!  Welcome to Book Monster and LITERAL ADDICTION.  Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to stop by and chat with us.  We’re very excited to have you with us today!

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  We always like to start out by getting to know our guest authors a little bit better.

Q1):   Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we can't find out on the internet, in your bio, etc?
Cindy: Wow.  That’s kind of a tough one.  My life is pretty much an open book.  If I’ve done it, I‘ve probably blogged about it or posted it on FB.  Okay – here’s one.  I’m an amateur potter.  Love getting my hands in the clay and creating something useful or pretty.  My kitchen cabinets are filled with pieces I’ve made and that we use every day.  What else – oh, I saved a baby hummingbird this fall – whoops, I think I blogged about that too.  I’m addicted to online Scrabble player :o)  There. I outted myself.

2)  What are some of your hobbies, or things that you enjoy when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?

Cindy: I mentioned the pottery – something I haven’t had a chance to do for a while and need to get back into.  I love to travel – was fortunate to be invited to be a keynote speaker at the Australian Romance Readers Conference last year and made a 3 week trip of both Australia and New Zealand with 6 of my girlfriends.  It was a lifelong dream – so was petting a kangaroo and holding a Kuala AND snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef.  I went kicking and screaming on the Zip line adventure but I’m so glad I did :o)

3)  Do you have any interesting writing quirks, or things that you must have with you to begin the writing process?

Cindy: I don’t think my quirks are very interesting, however, I do like to have a vanilla candle burning – something about the smell sooths me and helps me relax enough to let the creative juices flow.  And I always have to play a few online games before I really dig in to writing for the day – sort of a warm up exercise or two :o)

4)  What are the best parts of writing for you?  What are the hardest parts?

Cindy: Best parts: working at home.  I commuted for many years before I took the chance and began writing full time.  I love being at home and working in my pjs if the spirit moves me.  I also love my associations and friendships with other authors and industry professionals.  Some of my most cherished friendships have come about as a result of my writing career.
Hardest part:  deadlines.  They really are a lot of pressure.  And no, that’s not a complaint.  I’m so fortunate to be earning a living as a writer – but, the deadlines can be killers :o)

5)  What are 3 things that never fail to make you smile?

Cindy:  My husband, my kids, my pets.  Always!

6)  If you could spend the day with any one of your characters, who would it be, and what would you want to do?

Cindy: Oh, no fair.  That’s like asking me to choose a favorite child.  I don’t think I could do it.  But having said that, I think that Jenna McMillan from Show No Mercy, is a hoot. I love her grit and her sense of humor and I think she and I could be BFF’s. You thought I was going to name one of the guys, didn’t you :o) Oh, okay – if I were to pick one of the guys, it would be Johnny D or Luke.  Both of them have a lot of my hubby in them.

7)  Did anyone or anything in particular inspire you to start writing about men in the military?

Cindy: 9/11.  It’s as simple as that. My hubby and I watched the aftermath, the troop deployment, the bravery, valor and struggles and from that point on, there was nothing I wanted to write about more than figuring out what kind of individual would make those kind of sacrifices.

8)  For readers who have not yet read the BLACK OPS INC. series, can you please give us a brief synopsis of the series?

Cindy:  I’ve attached the very brief synopsis that resulted in the sale of the series to my amazing publisher, Pocket Books:

Where patriotism meets the seamy underbelly of a world held hostage by greed, corruption and terror.

Black Ops, Inc. (B.O.I.) picks up where the Bodyguards left off.  Where E.D.E.N. Securities showcased the all-American Garretts and their extended family, B.O.I., a private contracting firm specializing in jobs even the military and the CIA won’t touch, features an equally heroic but different breed of men and women fighting a covert war pitting good against evil.

The B.O.I. operatives are shadow warriors - former SEAL, DELTA, Special Forces, and CIA types who valiantly served their country and now fearlessly serve their employer.  They are individuals so committed to their cause they’ve lost touch with the concept of baseball, mom and apple pie.  Their world, instead, is comprised of bullets and bad guys and a daily fight to save not only the free world but their very lives.

9)  Can you give us any juicy tidbits of what we can expect in the newest book "Last Man Standing"?
Cindy: Surprises!  This book was a surprise to me from beginning to end.  From Joe going rogue and leaving everything he loved (Stephanie) and revered (his team mates at Black Ops Inc) to the opening of the book where we find Joe standing over the body of a dead priest.  And Stephanie – her character grew more than any character I’ve ever written.  You talk about a woman coming into her own?  I loved her transformation.
Here’s a link to an excerpt to give you an idea of what to expect from the book:

10)  How many books do you have planned for the BLACK OPS INC. series?  Who's book will be up next?

Cindy: Oh – here’s the deal.  Last Man Standing is officially the final episode in the BOI series.  It’s been such a successful (thank you one and all!) series, and it’s been so much fun and so rewarding to write it, but it was time for it to come to an end before all the vitality and energy was gone. Having said that, however, you will be seeing the BOIs again – just not in staring roles.
Mike – Primetime – Brown was a character who showed up in Luke and Val’s book (WITH NO REMORSE) and returned in a pivotal role in LAST MAN STANDING.  Mike’s book will be the first book in my new series, One-Eyed Jacks.  Mike is a combo of Johhny Reed, Luke Colter, Nolan Garrett and Gabe Jones.  He’s larger than life, irreverent, arrogant, and tortured … we just don’t know how tortured until we meet up with him again in his own book.  And I have it on good authority that the BOIs will be making cameo appearances when Mike needs a little (a LOT) of help getting himself out of a jam.
One-Eyed Jacks is shaping up to be an exciting and unexpected project. Packed with those hunky alpha males and exciting stories and hot romance – but with even more of an edge than either the Bodyguard or BOI series had.  I’m really jazzed about writing it!

11)  Do you have any other projects in the works that you can share with us?

Cindy:  As I mentioned above, a new 3 book series, One-Eyed Jacks is already in the works.  As soon as I have titles and publication dates, I’ll post that information on my webpage and FB.

SEAL of My DreamsAlready finished and available for sale is a project dear to my heart finish – SEAL of My Dreams.  SOMD is a collection of 18 short stories written by some of the hottest authors in the romance genre.  Each story features a Navy SEAL hero (my story, SEALed With A Kiss – is a BOI short about Luke and Val) and all proceeds go to Veteran’s Research Corporation, a nonprofit organization that supports research for medical issues for our Veterans. The collection was released 11-11-11 (Veteran’s Day) and by the end of the month raised nearly $50,000 for the charity.  We are hoping to more than double that soon and I want to encourage everyone to go out and buy this collection as soon as you can. You won’t be sorry and it’s for a GREAT cause.

Also, LOVE IS MURDER (another short story collection) will be released the end of May.  LIM features authors such as Lee Child, Debra Webb, Allison Brennan and many, many more.  My story – Dying To Score – is another BOI short featuring Johnny and Tink from WHISPER NO LIES.  I am so excited about the release of this book.  All of the stories are amazing.

And, in addition to my new One-Eyed Jacks series (no pub date available yet on Mikes book) Pocket is going to reissue 4 titles I wrote several years ago for the Loveswept line. I’m REALLY pumped about this.  These 4 books have not been available for some time and Pocket is going to bring them out at 2 in 1 volumes.  It’s very exciting.

If anyone wants to keep abreast of my publishing schedule, please go to my website, and sign up for my newsletter so you can get a heads up when a new book comes out.

12)  What is the most surprising thing you have learned in writing your books?

Cindy: That I’m still selling books.  Truly – after several rejections, I sold my first book several years ago and didn’t look much farther ahead than that. I was just happy to have sold. Now, 46 novels, novellas and short stories later, I’m still writing.  That’s astounding to me.  I’m very appreciative.

13)  If you could leave readers with one legacy, what would you want it to be?

Cindy:  That I wrote with my heart.  Sounds corny but it’s true.  I try very hard to provide good entertainment, yes, but driving it all is my desire to present admirable characters who are rich with integrity and valor and human frailties.  When I finish a book I want to be certain that I didn’t give short shrift to the men and women of the U.S. Military … I want readers to be left with the same sense of pride and admiration for my characters as I have for our fighting men and women.

14)  What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview, but have never been asked?  How would you answer that question?

Cindy: Honestly – I can’t imagine that there is a question that hasn’t been asked.  And like I said – I’m an open book – no pun intended :o)

15)  Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers while we have you here today?

Cindy: Just thank you, thank you, thank you for supporting my books these past years, for continuing to support my books and for keeping me employed :o)

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Thank you again Cindy for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us.  We would love to have you back again in the future to help you promote your next release.  We look forward to chatting with you later over in the LITERAL ADDICTION Chatroom
Cindy: It’s my absolute pleasure.  Thanks so much for inviting me.

I'm embarassed to admit that I haven't read any of Ms. Gerard's books! I suspect that's because I tend to read mostly UF or Historicals. I did, however, buy SEAL of My Dreams, which was a great collection. I'll definitely have to check out more of Ms. Gerard's books!

thanks again, everyone. And thanks for buying SEAL of MY DREAMS. Early figures indicate we have made more than $50,000.00 for the cause. We can only thank you readers for that! The work being done by the Veteran's Medical Research Foundation is so important and we owe so much to these men and women who have sacrificed so much for us.

What a great interview!

I'm a huge fan of Cindy's BOI books... they are always a win, I'm so glad to hear she's pseudo-continuing the series with the One-Eyed Jacks!

I'm halfway through Seal of my Dreams, and I'm loving it. It's jam-packed full of fabulous romantic suspense tidbits (the stories are short, but oh-so-good). Some are edge-of-your-seat thrills, others are tear-jerkers, and others are beautifully sweet. I recommend!

So glad to hear you saved a hummingbird... as a kid I accidentally disturbed a hummingbird's nest and two out of the three eggs fell out and cracked open... I was so devastated. Just thinking about it makes me cry... I keep hoping one day I'll get a chance to save one in the future to sort of bring back my karma, but so far, no luck.
