Hello everyone! Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are proud to welcome Meljean Brook to our sites today.
Meljean was raised in the middle of the woods, and hid under her blankets at night with fairy tales, comic books, and romances. She left the forest and went on a misguided tour through the world of accounting before focusing on her first loves, reading and writing–and she realized that monsters, superheroes, and happily-ever-afters are easily found between the covers, as well as under them, so she set out to make her own.
She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.
Meljean is the proud creator of the GUARDIANS and IRON SEAS series.
The GUARDIANS series consists of “Demon Angel”, “Demon Moon”, “Demon Night”, “Demon Bound”, “Demon Forged”, “Demon Blood”, “Demon Marked” and several shorts in Anthologies that are part of the same world. The 8th and final book in the series, Michael’s book, is due out in 2012.
The IRON SEAS series currently has 2 books – “The Iron Duke” and the just released “Heart of Steel”, with 2 shorts in anthologies that prequel it as well.
For our readers who are not yet familiar with Meljean’s work, we thought we’d give you the synopses of the first 2 and the most recent 2 books in the GUARDIANS series, and the synopses of the 2 books in the IRON DUKE series as well to peak your interest.
“Demon Angel” Synopsis:
For two thousand years, Lilith wrought vengeance upon the evil and the damned, gathering souls for her father’s armies Below and proving her fealty to her Underworld liege. Bound by a bargain with the devil and forbidden to feel pleasure, she draws upon her dark powers and serpentine grace to lead men into temptation. That is, until she faces her greatest temptation—Heaven’s own Sir Hugh Castleford…Once a knight and now a Guardian, Hugh spent centuries battling demons—and the cursed, blood-drinking nosferatu. His purpose has always been to thwart the demon Lilith, even as he battles his treacherous hunger for her. But when a deadly alliance unleashes a threat to both humans and Guardians in modern-day San Francisco, angel and demon must fight together against unholy evil—and against a desire that has been too long denied…
Who will be the first to succumb?
No one would call vampire Colin Ames-Beaumont kind, but they would call him unnaturally beautiful. For two centuries his tainted blood has kept him isolated from other vampires, sustained only by his beauty and vanity—bitter comforts, since a curse has erased his mirror reflection, replacing it with a terrifying glimpse of Chaos.
Savi Murray’s insatiable curiosity had gotten her into trouble before, but she’d always escaped unscathed. Then came Colin. In the midst of Heaven, he gave her a taste of ecstasy—and of Chaos. Deadly creatures from that realm herald the return of an imprisoned nosferatu horde, and Colin and Savi’s bond is their only protection—and their only passion…
Long before she was transformed into a Guardian and trained to fight demons, Rosalia knew darkness all too well. Raised by a demon, Rosalia learned to guard her heart—and her soul—until she found a man worthy of her love. Once, she thought that man would be the powerful vampire, Deacon…until he betrayed the Guardians.
After losing everything to the lies of a demon, Deacon lives only for revenge—and is taken aback when Rosalia offers to help. A vampire who has nothing—who is nothing—isn’t worthy of her attention. But Rosalia wants to do more than just look, and the explosive need between them can’t be held in check. And when Deacon’s vengeful quest creates a dangerous alliance of their enemies, she will be his only hope…
Nicholas St. Croix is familiar with the evil of demons. After his father’s death, a demon took over his mother’s body and raised him. Six years ago, his “mother” was responsible for the disappearance of the woman he loved, and Nicholas swore he’d find her—even if he had to go to Hell and back. Except she finds him first—and with one tormented kiss, he knows she too is a demon. Now he is determined to take his revenge…
Ash is a half-demon with no memory of her past or how she got to Hell. All she knows is that Nicholas St. Croix holds the key to her identity. And though he’s clearly drawn to her, Nicholas makes no secret of his distrust of her. Yet one kiss at a time, he breaks down her defenses as they battle an array of demons and Guardians. But is Ash’s greatest enemy the man at her side?
After the Iron Duke freed England from Horde control, he instantly became a national hero. Now Rhys Trahaearn has built a merchant empire on the power — and fear — of his name. And when a dead body is dropped from an airship onto his doorstep, bringing Detective Inspector Mina Wentworth into his dangerous world, he intends to make her his next possession.
Mina can’t afford his interest, however. Horde blood runs through her veins, and despite the nanotech enhancing her body, she barely scratches out a living in London society. Becoming Rhys’s lover would destroy both her career and her family, yet the investigation prevents her from avoiding him…and the Iron Duke’s ruthless pursuit makes him difficult to resist.
But when Mina uncovers the victim’s identity, she stumbles upon a conspiracy that threatens the lives of everyone in England. To save them, Mina and Rhys must race across zombie-infested wastelands and treacherous oceans — and Mina discovers the danger is not only to her countrymen as she finds herself tempted to give up everything to the Iron Duke.
As the mercenary captain of the Lady Corsair, Yasmeen has learned to keep her heart as cold as steel, her only loyalty bound to her ship and her crew. So when a man who once tried to seize her airship returns from the dead, Yasmeen will be damned if she gives him another opportunity to take control.
Treasure-hunter Archimedes Fox isn’t interested in the Lady Corsair — he wants her coldhearted captain and the valuable da Vinci sketch she stole from him. To reclaim it, Archimedes is determined to seduce the stubborn woman who once tossed him to a ravenous pack of zombies, but she’s no easy conquest.
When da Vinci’s sketch attracts a dangerous amount of attention, Yasmeen and Archimedes journey to Horde-occupied Morocco — and straight into their enemy’s hands. But as they fight to save themselves and a city on the brink of rebellion, the greatest peril Yasmeen faces is from the man who seeks to melt her icy heart…
How fantastic do those sound!!? We know, you want to go over to Amazon or Barnes & Noble and get them right now, but wait… Let’s find out some more about the incredible author behind these amazing titles first, shall we?
Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION: Hi Meljean! We’re very happy to have you here today, and are glad to help you promote “Heart of Steel” as well as your entire Backlist! Thank you for entrusting us with the task and for letting us get to know you a little bit better.
Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION: We like to start out by finding out a bit more about our guest author, and then we’ll dig into the books…
Meljean: Ha! The hardest question first? I’ve pretty much overshared everything on the internet already, so I’m not sure if there’s anything left to tell! The only things left seem to be really silly trivial things (My dentist tells me that I need to floss more…except I’ve shared that on Facebook!) Hmm. I have a super-smart 8-year-old daughter (who is sitting next to me right now, telling me what I should write.) That’s pretty much all there is to me.
Q2): How and when did you start writing?
Meljean: I began writing with a pencil in first grade. Ah, but you didn’t mean that, did you? Alas, I can’t remember exactly. I’ve always told little stories, but didn’t begin seriously writing until I was in my twenties. Before that, it was always something that I loved to do and I had fantasies of being an author, but I never considered making it a reality until I was working and realized that entering accounts payable and calculating payroll the rest of my life would pretty much be a living death. So I began alt-tabbing and writing at work, hoping to eventually make something of it. Luckily, I did.
Q3): Since you were raised surrounded by wilderness, do you still enjoy it now, or would you much rather be surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the city? Meljean: I like both. I prefer living in the city, because for daily life everything is so convenient. But I also love getting away from everything, and when I’m old and wrinkled I intend to buy a cabin out in the woods and live like a bear. Er…a bear with a cabin, that is.
Q4): What are some of your hobbies or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?
Meljean: I don’t have any time when I’m not writing or doing other writing business. Sometimes I’ll slip in a movie while I’m cleaning the house or doing busy work (like entering expenses or mailing out books) but aside from that, it’s all writing, all the time.
Q5): What are 3 things that never fail to make you smile?
Meljean: Stupid puns, the Animaniacs, and finishing a daily word count.
Q6): If you could have a group of readers and any of your characters in a room, what would you want to ask them, and how do you think they would answer?Meljean: I’d ask them which of my books is their favorites. I’m sure my characters would choose their own books. I have no idea what readers would say – every one I’ve spoken to has different likes and dislikes.
Q7): What’s a typical writing day like for you?
Meljean: I get up. I check e-mails, then write. I get my girl up and get her to school, I come back and write until I pick her up from school. Then I go home and write. Sometime in the evening I usually make dinner. Then I go back and write until I’m ready for bed.
Q8): We know that this is a tough question, but who are a couple of your favorite authors and what are a few titles in your TBR pile right now?
Meljean: China Mieville, Peter S. Beagle, and Anne Bishop. On the TBR pile is every book that I’ve wanted to read and has been published in the past year, because I haven’t been reading much at all. Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews, J.D. Robb, Meredith Duran, Loretta Chase…the list goes on and on.
Q9): If you were to write an auto-biography, what would you call it?
Meljean: The Not-so-Incredible Tales of a Dork Who Types Like a Monkey
Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION: O.K, now let’s find out some more about your awesome series…
Q10): Did you have to do research into anything specific to be able to properly write the GUARDIAN books?
Meljean: Yes. I didn’t really have to research the mythology or anything having to do with the worldbuilding, but for every book I have to research locations, occupations, and different aspects of each character to make them feel more ‘real’.
Q11): How are you feeling about Michael’s book being the last of the GUARDIAN series?
Meljean: I feel good about it. This is the story arc that I had planned for the Guardian series, so I’m thrilled that I’m going to be able to finish it as anticipated. I will be sorry to see it end, but at the same time, I –want- to end it here – not drag on the story and the characters forever and ever, without bringing anything new to the series.
Q12): What can we look forward to as the GUARDIAN series wraps up?
Meljean: Huge, epic battles in Hell. And giant spiders.
Q13): What were some of the challenges in bringing THE IRON SEAS series to life?
Meljean: The biggest challenge was creating an alternate history for the entire world, and one that spanned several centuries – and making certain that alternate history worked on a large scale and a small, local scale.
Q14): How many books do you have planned for THE IRON SEAS series?
Meljean: Right now, I have contracts for five – so after Heart of Steel, there will be at least three more. Whether more come after that will depend on reader reaction and interest.
Q15): What can we look forward to as the series progresses beyond “Heart of Steel”?
Meljean: I intend to move around the world. It would be silly for me to create this huge alternate history that encompasses every continent and then not visit those spots. So I want to explore this world and tell stories from each part of it.
Q16): With Fantasy being such a popular genre these days, what fascinates you most about it?
Meljean: Fantasy? I think that I like fantasy mostly because it reveals the vast richness of the human imagination. But I think that’s the reason I like every genre.
Q17): Did you set out on your own into the Steampunk genre, or was it something that the Publisher suggested to you?
Meljean: I’ve wanted to do it for several years, and when the Guardian series began to wind down, my editor asked me if there was another series I’d like to do. So I immediately said, “OMG, steampunk!” and luckily, she liked the idea.
Q18): You’ve written a wide array of character types, and very well we might add. Do you have a personal favorite “Supe Group” as we call them? Why?
Meljean: My heroines. Don’t get me wrong, I love the heroes, but I’m a very heroine-oriented writer (and reader), and so my books are always as much the heroine’s story as it is her romance.
Q19): Is there a question that you have always wanted to be asked in an interview but have never been asked? How would you answer that question?
Meljean: Oh, man. In six years of interviews, I’m hard pressed to think of something that hasn’t been asked. Hmmm… Maybe: Peanut butter and jelly, or peanut butter and banana?
I’m a peanut butter and banana girl.
Q20): Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers while we have you here today?
Meljean: Just that I appreciate you all so much! I write the sort of books that I love to read, and it really blows me away that anyone else enjoys reading them to – I’m so grateful for that!
Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION: Meljean, thank you so much for being with us today! We’re very happy to help you get the word out about “Heart of Steel” and the rest of your work, and we would LOVE to have you back for the release of Michael’s book in 2012 if you’re interested!! J
