Q&A Interview and Giveaway with Sable Grace

Hello Book Monsters and Literal Addicts! Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are very pleased to welcome Sable Grace to our sites today.

Sable Grace is the writing team of Heather Waters & Laura Barone, long time critique partners and friends who came together by fluke to discover their voices fit together quite nicely during an experiment of "I'll write the first sentence, you write the next." It was meant to be nothing more than a warm up exercise for each of them to get started on their own projects, but soon, the story became far more interesting than what they were supposed to be working on and Sable Grace was born.

Both Heather and Laura reside in Florida, are happily married, and are, well, complete opposites. (Think the Odd Couple on crack here.) Still, there's enough common ground for them to weave their words together in the voice of Sable Grace.

Heather also writes medieval romances under her real name, which you can find at, and Laura is a Golden Heart finalist for her highly sensual manuscript, Mr. Right Now.

Together, as Sable Grace, Heather and Laura have created the DARK BREED series which currently has one book "Ascension" and one e-novella, "Before The Fall".  The second book in the series "Bedeviled" will be released on 12/27/11.

In case you are not yet familiar with the DARK BREED series, here is a brief look at the books…

"Ascension" - DARK BREED - Book 1

The gates of hell have opened, and one woman will stand in the crossfire as the Dark Breed -- vampyre, demons, shape shifters -- and mankind fight their last battle for survival.

Kyana is half Vampyre, half Lychen... And the last of her kind. Determined, dangerous, and damned, she has no love for the mortals who have imprisoned and misused her. But when the Order of Ancients entrusts her with a mission -- to find the key that will send the Dark Breed back into Hell for eternity -- Kyana has no choice but to accept.

She is furious to learn her assignment comes with an escort... Ryker, a demigod and fierce warrior who long ago found a way under her skin and stayed there. In a shaky alliance, they discover an ancient cult with dangerous motive and a god who seeks to destroy all others. And as Kyana begins to feel the heat that threatens to bind her to Ryker, she knows she has to resist. For it could only mean the undoing of them both...

"Before The Fall" - DARK BREED - e-novella

Zach was once the Order of Ancients' most feared warrior, beating back the hounds of hell to protect the unsuspecting human race. But since he left the Order ten years ago, he'd been living as a mortal...until now. The gates of the underworld are breaking open, and Zach is needed once again in the fight. But before he can answer his summons, there's one person he refuses to leave behind. Shanna may think Zach has screw loose, spouting all this "hounds of hell" nonsense, but he has to get her to safety. The journey to the Order's headquarters is a dangerous one, and even a warrior like Zach might not be strong enough to keep the darkness at bay.

"Bedeviled" - DARK BREED - Book 2
Releasing on December 27, 2011

She has done the unthinkable-- turned her best friend into a Dark Breed: part Vampyre, Lychen and Witch...

Kyana thought only to save her friend's life when she fed Haven her blood; instead, she created a monster. Now the woman she thought of as a sister is under the spell of an ancient, vengeful god, determined to set him free and wreak havoc on the mortal world...and only Kyana can stop her.

But time is running out. In just seven days, Kyana's Vampyre and Lychen abilities will be gone and she'll be completely transformed into the Goddess of the Hunt -- and her blood ties to Haven will be severed. By her side is Ryker -- ally, demigod, lover -- who will sacrifice everything to keep Kyana safe...even the attraction that burns between them. Together they have one chance to save Haven from herself... To save humanity from Hell on earth.

We know, you're adding them to your TBR list.  Awesome!  Now, let's find out more about the dynamic duo behind these incredible books….

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hello Heather and Laura!  Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to sit down and talk to us.  We’re so happy to have you with us today!

Heather: So happy to be here. Love being a Book Monster for the day!

Laura: Thank you so much for having us! We’re thrilled to be here

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  We always like to start out by getting to know our guest authors a little bit better.

Q1):   Can you tell us 3 things about yourselves that we can't find out on the internet, in your bio, etc?

Heather: 1) My husband has given me permission to have an affair with Jon Bon Jovi if the opportunity ever presented itself. 2) I used to think I was going to be a singer, until I realized I was too shy to sing in front of anything but my stuffed animals. 3)I get an ear piercing for each publishing contract I sign.

Laura: 1) I want a little yellow taxi cab tattooed on my left shoulder, but I’m too allergic to pain to even come close to having it done.
2) I broke both my arms, at the same time, and realized just how much my husband really loves me.
3) Even though it’s rare for a woman, I'm literally colorblind, which gives me an excuse when my socks don't match--even when I really thought that they did.

2)  How long have each of you been writing, and what genre did you start out writing in?

Heather: I’ve been writing forever. I started writing with the goal of publication about ten years ago, in the medieval romance genre, in which I published two novels with Berkley. I always have several projects going at once, and in several genres, though. Historical, paranormal, women’s fiction. I’m sort of all over the place. I get bored easily.

Laura: I can’t think of a time I didn’t write something. Short stories or poetry when I was younger. As an adult, it’s always been romance. My favorite genre is sensual.

3)  What made you decide to team up and create Sable Grace?

Heather: We needed to get away and focus on writing so I rented a motel room and invited Laura to join me. Before we got to work, we decided to warm up with a game. The story that evolved wasn’t the Dark Breed series, but we had a lot of fun doing it and Sable Grace was born.

Laura: Wow, that was an accident. J We each wanted to write outside our comfort zone and since the other wrote what we wanted to try (Heather was writing paranormals and I was writing contemporaries) it just seemed natural to team up.

4)  Where did the pseudonym “Sable Grace” come from?

Laura: We knew we wanted the name Sable and after trying every combination of our names out there, we decided that Sable was dark so we needed something light to go with it to make it fit us and our personalities. Grace seemed to make that connection for us.

Heather: What Laura said. We tried Laura Waters and Heather Barone too but those felt really icky. We didn’t like giving each other our last names. It was just too weird. Same with the combo of middle names. Diana Michaele would have put me first in the name, and Diana isn’t a last name so. . . we created something new.

5)  Do either of you have any interesting writing quirks, or things that you must have with you to begin the writing process?

Heather: I have to have silence when writing. I can have noise when revising, like when we’re together, but otherwise, silence or music with no lyrics. Movie scores work well for me. Also, I have to have a game going in the background. It’s nice to bounce out of writing, play a round of whatever and think about what comes next for five minutes then get back to work. I usually do this at least once per page. Also, I cannot work without a can of Diet Dr. Pepper or a cup of hot tea beside me. Period.

Laura: I can’t write if it’s quiet. If I’m in my office, I have music to fit the mood blaring. If I’m writing in the living room, it’s usually the television playing in the background. And, if we’re writing together, there’s usually a pod cast running.

6)  What are some of your hobbies, or things that you each enjoy when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?

Heather: My family loves piling in the Jeep and heading to St. Augustine for a day of shopping/walking on the weekends, as often as possible. I’m also a huge reader and I get really excited around February when I know planting season will be starting soon and I can have my vegetable garden again.

Laura: Spending time with the family is at the top of the list. We love movie nights, book and game time and trail riding our Jeeps whenever we can.

7)  What is the best part of writing as a duo?  What are the hardest parts?

Heather: The hardest part is probably relying on someone else to do their part, or getting to the end of your pages and having the other person take it in a totally different direction that you didn’t see or don’t particularly care for. On the other hand, one of the best parts is getting to the end of your pages and having the other person take it in a totally different direction that you didn’t see and end up loving.

Laura: There’s always someone to share the highs and lows of this business with. Someone who ‘gets’ it and doesn’t have the glassy eyed look of boredom non-writing people sometimes get.

8)  For readers who have not yet read the DARK BREED series, can you give us a brief description in your own words, what the series is about?

Heather: Gods are weak, need  replacements, replacements are dying… uh oh! World’s in deep caca!

Laura: When all appears lost, the least-likeliest hero imaginable steps up to kick butt and save the entire human race from a fate much worse than even death.

9)  How many books are planned for the DARK BREED series and what can we expect to happen as the series progresses?

That really depends on the readers and our publisher. As long as they’re wanting more we’ll keep ‘em entertained with heroines that are bigger, badder, and better than their foes and heroes who are darker and sexier and not afraid to let the women in their lives call the shots—well most of the time anyway. J

10)  Do you have any other projects either of you are working on, either together or separately that you can share with us?

Heather: I’m actually working on a women’s fiction project with no idea whether it even has potential. I just enjoying the hell out of the change of pace and really delving into character without the explosive plotting. It’s nice to have a bit of both in my head all the time. We just turned in book 3 of the Dark Breed series, titled Chosen for now. After that, well, we’ll have to see!

Laura: We have a couple ideas for Sable Grace in the ‘thinking’ stages as we enjoy the holidays. I’m also working on a couple projects with Blaze in mind.
