Q&A Interview and Giveaway with Gini Koch

Hello Book Monsters and Literal Addicts! Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are very pleased to welcome author Gini Koch to our sites today.

Gini Koch lives in Hell’s Orientation Area (aka Phoenix, AZ), works her butt off (sadly, not literally) by day, and writes by night with the rest of the beautiful people. She writes the fast, fresh and funny Alien/Katherine “Kitty” Katt series for DAW Books and the Martian Alliance Chronicles series for Musa Publishing. She also writes under a variety of pen names (including Anita Ensal, Jemma Chase, A.E. Stanton, and J.C. Koch), listens to rock music 24/7, and is a proud comics geek-girl willing to discuss at any time why Wolverine is the best superhero ever (even if Deadpool does get all the best lines). She speaks frequently on what it takes to become a successful author and other aspects of writing and the publishing business. She can be reached through her website at www.ginikoch.com.

Her interests include seeing how often she can ask, "So, have I told you about this plot twist yet?" of her husband before he goes insane, going to rock concerts with her daughter, and training her pets to 'bring it'. Gini started writing to have an excuse to stay up late playing on the computer while listening to music and mooning over pictures of Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.

Now she's expanded her thinking -- she moons over a wide variety of hunks in order to keep the visual creative juices flowing. So to speak.
Gini is the creator of the amazing ALIEN/Katherine “Kitty” Katt series, which currently consists of four books, Book #1 - "Touched by an Alien", Book #2 - "Alien Tango", Book #3 - "Alien in the Family" and Book #4 - "Alien Proliferation" which was just released yesterday on 12/6/11.  The 5th book in the series "Alien Dipolomacy" is scheduled for release on April 3, 2012. The 6th,  7th, and 8th books, “Alien vs. Alien”, “Alien in the House”, and “Alien Collective” will release in December 2012, April 2013, and December 2013 respectively.
In case you have not checked out Gini's Aliens yet, here's a synopsis of each book to keep you up to date….

Book #1 - "Touched by an Alein"
How can a sexy marketing manager join forces with an Alpha Centauri male in Armani to save the planet-using hairspray, a Mont Blanc pen, and rock n' roll?

Touched by an Alien

Marketing manager Katherine "Kitty" Katt steps into the middle of what appears to be a domestic dispute turned ugly. And it only gets uglier when the man turns into a winged monster, straight out of a grade-Z horror movie, and goes on a killing spree. Though Kitty should probably run away, she springs into action to take the monster down.

In the middle of the chaos a handsome hunk named Jeff Martini appears, sent by the "agency" to perform crowd control. He's Kitty's kind of guy, no matter what planet he's from. And from now on, for Kitty, things are going to be sexy, dangerous, wild, and out of this world

Book #2 - "Alien Tango"
For Katherine "Kitty" Katt, Alien Super-Being Exterminator, anti-alien conspiracies, threats from outer space, and a couple of killer alligators are all in a day's work, but internal alien conspiracies bring a new meaning to the terms chaos and confusion.

It's been five months since marketing manager Katherine "Kitty" Katt started working with the aliens from Alpha Centauri, and she and Jeff Martini are getting closer. But when an experimental spacecraft is mysteriously returned to the Kennedy Space Center, Kitty and the rest of her team are called in to investigate. Now the team must survive murderous attacks, remove a space entity from a group of astronauts, and avoid an unhinged woman with a serious crush on Kitty's high school boyfriend. And that's all before evil masterminds decide Kitty's extermination is vital

Book #3 - "Alien in the Family"
Planning any wedding is hard enough, but Katherine "Kitty" Katt and Jeff Martini have a lot more to worry about than seating arrangements, because multiple interstellar invasions, Alpha Team in mortal peril, and inter-alien conspiracies are all on the guest list -- and the gifts they've brought explode.

Super-Being Exterminator Kitty Katt and the Alpha Centaurian she loves, Jeff Martini, should be finalizing their wedding plans. But that was before she discovers Jeff is in line to become Emperor back on his home world. Kitty knows she is everything a royal family wouldn't approve of, and is bracing herself for the worst. As it turns out, the royal family is just the beginning. Especially when extraterrestrial Amazonian terrorists are determined to start and end Kitty and Jeff's nuptial festivities with a bang.

Book #4 - "Alien Proliferation" released 12/6/11.
A new set of conspiracies, old enemies, and a dangerous new drug being tested on unwilling subjects are more than enough to deal with, but new parents Jeff and Kitty Martini have an even bigger problem -- the bad guys want their newborn baby.
Alien Super-Being Exterminator Kitty Katt is expecting her first baby. But the alien attacks are getting more dangerous, and now Kitty and her Alpha Centaurion husband, Jeff, have to find out who's behind the conspiracy to kill Kitty's secret agent mom and what caused Kitty's transformation into a superhuman-and they've got to do it all before the baby shower...

Book 5 - "Alien Dipolomacy"
Coming April 3, 2012
Being newlyweds and new parents is challenging enough. But nothing’s ever easy for Jeff and Kitty Katt-Martini, particularly not when they have to switch from being super-being exterminators and Commanders in Centaurion Division to mastering the political landscape as the new heads of American Centaurion’s Diplomatic Corps.

Kitty’s brand of diplomacy and lobbying isn’t quite as smooth as Jeff’s—Washington parties, lobbyists of all stripes, and politicians from all states and countries present challenges a well-stocked iPod and quirky sense of humor aren’t always up to handling. But when a shadowy assassination plot and a new set of anti-alien conspirators are identified, Kitty’s the diplomat for the job—in between “Mommy and Me,” “Diplomacy for Beginners,” and the dreaded “Washington Wife” classes.

As explosions, assassination attempts, and murders pile up, the question shifts from “who’s the target” to “will we all survive to see next week”?

Now that you’re totally hooked on the series and we have you adding this awesome series to your TBR list, let's get to the interview so we can find out more about the amazing woman behind the books….

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hi Gini!  Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to stop by and celebrate the release of "Alien Proliferation" with us today!   We’re so happy to have you with us!

Gini:  Thanks so much for having me, it’s great to be here!

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  We always like to start out by getting to know our guest authors a little bit better.

Q1):   Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we can't find out on the internet, in your bio, etc?

Gini: Hmmm…my life’s an open book, and this question’s been asked of me more than once, so it’s getting harder to come up with secrets, but I’ll give it a shot.

1. I have the apparatus in the Casa to make tea and coffee at least 10 different ways (yes, we love tea and coffee)
2. I collect chocolate (hint, hint) (hey, you cannot blame a girl for trying)
3. I love many things, but I could honestly just stay in bed all day (because you can do all my favorite things in bed, so why leave it?)

Q2)  What are some of your hobbies, or things that you each enjoy when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?

Gini: Wow. Wait a minute. You mean there are things I can do BESIDES write and take care of author business? No way! Who knew?

Like most authors, I like to read, books and magazines and the backs of cereal boxes. I also listen to music, watch “Castle”, watch my fave DVDs over and over again (and, you know, sometimes watch NEW DVDs, too…occasionally) and go to concerts. Ummm…other than spend time with my husband, daughter and pets, that’s probably it for my “exciting” extracurricular activities. Oh, I do have a Ninja, but these days, I’m too busy to get to ride it much. And I like to drive fast, but speeding tickets are hard to explain to the hubs. I also love sleeping and would do more of it, but I have far too many deadlines to get away with lounging in bed all day long any more.

I know, too exciting, right? Everyone should go lie down for a bit, after reading all that exciting stuff.

Q3)  Do you have any interesting writing quirks, or things that you must have with you to begin the writing process?

Gini: Music. I need lots and lots of music. And the right music, too. It’s always rock or pop or country (or anything, really, as long as it has lyrics) of some kind, but the right band or bands for each story really matters to me. The right music is the difference between my pecking out words and my writing so fast my keyboard steams.

Other than that, nothing much more is necessary. Internet access is helpful, chaos is not a problem, and lots and lots of chocolate and Coca-Cola helps the process a lot. But without music, the magic really doesn’t happen.

Q4)  What are 3 things that never fail to make you smile and 3 things that never fail to piss you off?

Gini: Hmmmm, there are so many…it’s hard to narrow this down, but I’m giving it the old college try…

1. My cats, the Killer Kitties, and my dogs, the Canine Death Squad
2. My husband and daughter (oh sure, that’s probably stretching the truth a bit, but they read all my interviews…eventually…and they like to see themselves mentioned in a positive light, so there you go honey and cub!)
3. Someone telling me they enjoyed something I’ve written -- truly, fan mail is the best thing IN THE WORLD, whether it’s via email, my blog, Twitter, Facebook, etc., and having someone tell you IN PERSON that they loved your writing is like getting fan mail to a factor of 10. (My fans are my crack. Is that wrong?)

1. People pirating books. The pirate sites and the people who frequent them. We make little enough money as it is, but to pointedly steal authors’ works (and any other artists’ works) and act like it’s your right to steal? That pisses me off to no end. Never tell me you’ve pirated my books because I won’t be nice and I will be likely to club you to death like a baby seal if given even half a chance.
2. People hating on Pit Bulls when they’ve never owned or even known one, without realizing that it’s people who make each Pit Bull what it is, whether that’s lover or fighter (and all Pitties would rather be lovers, FYI).
3. People not asking first and then mispronouncing my last name. It’s Koch like the former mayor of New York or fine scotch whiskey, NOT like a proud rooster in the morning, okay? Okay people introducing me? Especially if you’re doing so via a microphone? OKAY??? (Yeah, it’s “fun” to hear the mispronunciation being blared out on a loudspeaker…truly…)

Q5)  What are some of the books you have in your TBR pile right now?

Gini: Oh. My. God. I dread this question. Because I have so many. “The Shard Axe” by Marsheila Rockwell, and “One Salt Sea” by Seanan McGuire are at the top. I waited like a slavering beast for those, and have been too busy with deadlines to read them. I also have the latest from Terry Pratchett, and a host of others, on the pile. The huge TBR pile. THERE ARE SO MANY. And they’re mostly by friends of mine, and I feel guilty for not reading their books yet. One day…

Q6)  What are some of your favorite TV shows and movies?

Gini:  Wow, do we have the time? LOL I like a lot of stuff.

TV: Castle, Burn Notice, White Collar, Psych, Covert Affairs, NCIS, Dancing with the Stars (I blame Castle for this one, btw), Thundercats, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness (yes, I mean that, for both of those, and I’M NOT ASHAMED), Kim Possible (same again), and Ringer (though I’m really just watching it for the sheer majesty of its amazing lack of reality while waiting for one, just one, character to do something, anything, a normally intelligent, sane person would do).

TV Shows that are no longer on but I own all of on DVD: Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, the Wild, Wild West, and The A-Team (okay, I only own Seasons 1 & 2 of the A-Team, but those are the ones that didn’t suck).

Movies: Hello, Dolly, Undercover Blues, Mystery Men, Big Trouble in Little China, Galaxy Quest, Men in Black, Demon Knight, Mortal Kombat, pretty much any musical ever made, definitely every Disney movie ever made but especially Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians, The Aristocats, and The Incredibles, Dogma and the rest of the Kevin Smith oeuvre but particularly Dogma (and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back), the ORIGINAL Star Wars trilogy, and Serenity.

I’m sure, nay, positive that I’m missing some beloved shows and movies, but there’s only so much time and so much space, so we’ll leave it at that.

Q7)  If you could have one super power, which would you want it to be and why that one?

Gini: I get asked this question a lot. I give the same answer -- super speed. Because many of my characters HAVE superpowers, I actually have put a lot of thought into the ramifications of said powers, and I have to say that moving faster than a speeding bullet has the most to offer me. Super strength would be nice, but only as an addition to the super speed.

Q8)  If you could spend the day with any one of the ALIEN COLLECTIVE, who would it be, and what would you want to do?

Gini: Well, that’s a two-part answer. I call my fans the Alien Collective, so if you’re asking me which one of my fans I’d want to spend the day with, I’d have to say you can’t make me choose. LOL I want to hang with ALL of my fans, and pretty much can’t pick just one of my beloveds.

If you forced me to choose, it’d be my critique partner, Lisa, and what we’d do all day is what we do every day -- yap about our lives and plot out our next books, only we’d do it in person.

If you mean which of my characters I’d want to spend the day with well…I spend every day with them, really. My characters are, for the most part, a noisy and demanding bunch. Out of all of them, Martini is the quietest, and Kitty and Chuckie are the loudest.

However, assuming that it was possible outside of my mind, I’d go for either Charles “Chuckie” Reynolds or the Pontifex, Richard White. Because they’re both rich and successful and really interesting. And not taken by my leading lady.

Okay this was more of a four part answer. So sue me. LOL

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Now we'd like to ask you more about your books and series:

Q9)  For readers who have not yet experienced how amazing your ALIEN series is, can you please tell us about the series?

Gini: They’re the best books in the world and a deal at twice the price! (Hey, you still cannot blame a girl for trying.)

The series follows Katherine “Kitty” Katt, the world’s best accidental badass, as she first discovers that the Roswell rumors are true and that there are not only aliens living on Earth, but they’re here to help, have what humans consider superpowers, and are all drop dead gorgeous. As the series progresses, so does Kitty’s involvement with the Alpha Centaurions, Earth governments, and interstellar governments.

The books are science fiction with a lot of romance, action and humor. A lot of humor. Kitty’s a fun, funny girl with a quirky worldview, and she deals with politics, conspiracy theories, and big, bad fuglies of all types and planets of origin in her own style. It’s not always a pretty or smooth style, but it tends to do the job…eventually.

Q10)  Katherine "Kitty" Katt is one bad ass chick.  Did anyone in particular inspire her character?

Gini: Nope. Kitty is Kitty, basically. She’s her own person.

Q11)  What was the inspiration behind the ALIEN series?

Gini: I had a dream. Not the brave, world-changing Martin Luther King, Jr. kind of dream, but rather a nightmare kind of dream. It was dark and cool and noir-ish, and when I woke up, I decided I’d write a dark, noir-ish short horror story.

I started writing, and the voice wasn’t dark, nor noir-ish, nor horror. By page 3, I knew this wasn’t going to be short, by page 5 I knew it wasn’t going to be horror, and when Martini breezed onto the page, the characters took over, I let them tell me what was going on, and the rest is history.

Q12)  How many books do you have planned for the ALIEN series?  Can you tell us what's in store for the gang?

Gini: Well, right now, I’m contracted through Book 8, Alien Collective. I have through Book 12 mapped out (as much as I map) and I can “see” through Book 16 at this time. Pretty much, my editor’s said that as long as readers keep buying the books, DAW will keep publishing the books.

Q13)  Do you have any other projects in the works that you can share with us?

Gini: Yes indeed! First off, I have “The Royal Scam” out, which is the first installment of my serialized short fiction series, The Martian Chronicles, from Musa Publishing.

I also write under a variety of pen names, and I have releases out and coming out from Musa for the following:

Jemma Chase has “The Disciple” and “Hotter Than Hell” both out now, and “Strange Protection” in the December issue of Penumbra eMagazine. These stories deal with the paranormal, including vampires and werewolves (and the Devil, oh my!).

A.E. Stanton has “When Josie Comes Home”, the first installment of the novella series The New West, out now, with “Deacon’s Ark”, the second installment, coming out a couple of days from now, on December 9th. This series is set in a post-apocalyptic world where electricity’s destroyed “civilization” and the population is back to living like it’s the Old West, with some technological advancements and some very scary monsters.

J.C. Koch writes horror (and is still a little upset that that cool, noir-ish horror story became “Touched by an Alien”) and has the short story “Field Trip” in the November issue of Penumbra eMagazine (which, being an emagazine, is still available for purchase).

Anita Ensal has “Contingency Plan” releasing on December 23rd. It’s the first installment in the short fiction urban/rural fantasy series, The Neighborhood. The second installment, “Being Neighborly”, will release early in 2012. As will “Wanted”, the first installment of the serialized short fiction science fiction romance series The Asteroid Belt.

Q14)  What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview, but have never been asked?  How would you answer?

Gini: Well, gosh, the one I’d been waiting FOREVER for the gals at I Smell Sheep finally did ask (Q: Boxers or briefs? A: Thong or commado). So, lemme ponder…

Q. How often are you mistaken for Marilyn Monroe or Jessica Rabbit?
A. Far more often than you’d imagine. And it never gets old.

Q15)  Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers while we have you here today?

Gini: You complete me. Yes, all the Free Stuff up at the website is really all yours for the asking. No, Christopher is never getting his own spinoff. And please do your girl a solid and  buy “Alien Proliferation” and pre-order “Alien Diplomacy” -- believe me, pre-orders matter. And remember that I love you all.

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Thank you again Gini for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us.  We would love to have you back again in April 2012 to help you promote the release of "Alien Diplomacy" if you're available.
Gini: Absolutely! Have your people call my people and we’ll get it set up!

If you would like to find out more about Gini and keep up with her latest news, you can check out her Website or follow her on Facebook, Twitter, or Goodreads.
