How To Date The Undead with Gena Showalter and Jill Monroe

Hello everyone!  Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are incredibly proud to have two phenomenal authors with us today!  We’re thrilled to welcome back the amazingly talented Gena Showalter, and are very proud to welcome the equally talented Jill Monroe to our sites for her first appearance with us.

Jill is the award winning author of the SEAL series.

The two recently teamed up with Nalini Singh and Jessica Andersen to produce the ROYAL HOUSE OF SHADOWS series; four books, each written by one author, that introduced a supernatural spin on each of their favorite fairy tales.  Gena’s book in the ROYAL HOUSE OF SHADOWS series, “Lord of the Vampires”, was the first, and has received incredible reviews.  Jill’s book, “Lord of Rage”, the second book of the series, is getting equally fabulous chatter and feedback.

While working on and finishing up ROYAL HOUSE OF SHADOWS, Gena and Jill collaborated once again and came up with the incredible concept of “Dating the Undead” – a book in magazine format - complete with stories, articles, classifieds, columns, spoof ads and enough drool worthy pics to make any paranormal romance junkie happy.

“Dating the Undead” is set to be released tomorrow, December 27, 2011, and we are here today to help Gena and Jill celebrate and promote like crazy.

For those of you that haven’t yet heard about “Dating the Undead”, we thought we’d give you a little peek into what’s in store (believe us, you are going to want to get this thing ASAP!):

Yes, we know… you’re salivating – we can’t say we blame you!  What do you say we get to our interview and learn a little bit more about these 2 amazing women and the book though, shall we?  In keeping with the ‘theme’, we thought we’d ask some dating questions to break the ice.  Let’s see what the ladies had to say… J

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hi Gena, welcome back!  Hi Jill, welcome to our humble abodes!  We’re VERY happy to have you both with us today.  Thank you so very much for taking time out of your busy schedules to sit down and chat with us, and for entrusting us with the task of getting the word out about “Dating the Undead”.

Gena & Jill:  Thanks for having us!
Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  We always like to start out by getting to know our guest authors a little bit better, and in keeping with the whole theme of “Dating the Undead”, we thought we’d ask some dating related questions.  We hope you don’t mind…

Q1): Do you remember your first date?  What did you do and how did it go?

Gena:  I’ve actually been on very few “dates.”  I met my husband while we were both in high school.  A huge group of us got together to go to a haunted house and we ended up in the same car.  When we got there, I’d made such a wonderful impression on him that he offered to sacrifice me to the guy with the chainsaw.  Of course, I knew in that moment that I had to have him.  We married soon after we graduated, and we’ve been together ever since.  What can I say?  He swept me off my feet--or I swept him off of his.  Whatever.  Semantics.
Jill:  I'm not sure if it would be considered a date, but this guy offered to drive me home after school.  I couldn't drive yet, and was a little intimidated by this upperclassman. I got so tongue tied on the drive that everything he said to me, I responded in the same exact way - "That' so sad." (It's amazing how many questions and statement can be responded to in that way - try it). It was so bad, he eventually turned on the radio, and he didn't attempt to talk to me the rest of the way home.  I'm mortified telling this story!  In fact... it's so sad.
Q2):  What is your idea of the perfect date?

Gena:  I have VERY high standards.  I want to eat a wonderful meal, go home, change into my pj’s, and then watch TV.  If that’s not doable, I want to eat a wonderful meal at home while in my pj’s and then read while snuggling.  Yes, I am every man’s dream<---true story.

Jill: I'm a simple girl.  A private jet, a secluded beach, but if that's not doable, just an opportunity to laugh and talk.  I like "doing" something together, so not really a movie and dinner.  Unless we make dinner together.  Although I do make an exception with sports - I love football and basketball, so a man who can score some great seats is a winner!

Q3):  If you could go on a free-pass date with anyone (dead, alive [or undead], real, fictional, etc), who would you want it to be, and what would you want to do?

Gena: I wouldn’t call this a date because he was a happily married man utterly devoted to his wife, and I am a happily married woman utterly devoted to my husband.  Therefore, I would call this a chance to ask a thousand questions. I’d pick Kenneth E. Hagin and chat with him about the Bible.  I’m in the process of reading it all the way through for the first time and he was one of the greatest teachers of all time.  I have been listening to his sermons and they are amazing.  Plus, I honestly love the Lord and I’m always thrilled to talk about Him.

Jill:  As for history, I've always had a thing for Mozart.  Fictionally - the moment Gena sent me the chapters of Heart of the Dragon, I was in love with Darius!  The dragon shape shifter who must kill anyone that trespasses into Atlantis - loved everything about that tormented man!  But like so many others, I'm waiting (not so patiently) for Paris' story in The Darkest Seduction.  And Dageus MacKelter from The Dark Highlander.  Actually, I could go on and on with the fictional list.

Q4):  You’re stuck on a deserted island with a drop-dead gorgeous vampire, a sexy alpha male shifter, a wickedly funny zombie, an elusive angelic angel, and a sinfully sexy demon.  Which would you choose to satisfy your fantasies and why?

Gena: This might surprise everyone, but my favorite guys within the Dating the Undead are the zombies.  They aren’t anything like the zombies in my upcoming release Alice in Zombieland—those guys aren’t sexy, they are pure evil (that’s just a side note in case someone reads this interview then reads Alice and wonders what I found so sexy about rotting carcasses).  These zombies love a wonderful meal, pj’s and watching TV.  I don’t know if you’ve heard but I’m kinda into that . . .

Jill:  For me it's the shape shifter all the way!  The secrets... the leashed beast... very sexy!

Q5): What are the best and worst pick-up lines you’ve ever heard?

Gena: Several years ago I wrote a book called Catch A Mate.  Each chapter started with a pick-up line.  I’d love to tell you that guys have used those on me, but I’ve honestly not been hit on that much.  I guess I’ve always been that old married lady who never wears make up and likes sweat pants a little too much.

Jill:  What was the name of the heroine of that book, Gena?
Gena:  Jillian, of course!  Only the best name ever.

Jill: The best pick-up line I've ever heard was:  "I've been sitting here for over ten minutes trying to think of something to say you."  It's that combination of confidence and uncertainty that seems real...even if it's not : )

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  O.K, now we’ll ask some questions directly related to “Dating the Undead”.

Q6):  How did you two come up with the incredible concept behind “Dating the Undead”?

Gena:  The publisher actually came to us with the idea, and we picked it up and ran with it!
Jill: We had a wonderful time!

Q7):  Do either of you have a personal favorite part of the book?

Gena:  The ads.  They are For me it would be all the parts that Jill wrote.  They're witty, funny and made me laugh out loud every time.  (just a little taste of our editing process)
Jill:  Thanks, Gena!  I couldn't have written that better myself.  My favorite part of the book are the ads.  I go back and look at those over and over again!
Q8):  Are you planning any follow up ‘issues’?

Gena: Right now I’m under serious deadline, but of course I'd love to write with Jill again...
Jill:  It would be fun to write about new and different Immortals, and we never like to say never!
Q9):  What were the best and hardest parts of putting “Dating the Undead” together?

Gena: This was a different kind of writing for the both of us.  We're so used to working in a world of our own imagination... only this time we had to apply it to real life.  Sort of :)
Jill:  Getting the right tone for each article was the hardest part of writing, but once we narrowed that baby on target it quickly became the best.  In fact there were several articles that didn't quite make the cut, and we will slowly be releasing some of those just for fun.

Gena: I think it will be easy to spot why they were deleted.
Jill:  Yes, my favorite of the cut articles is: Bad Undead Pick-up Lines.
Gena: Please tell me we’re not actually going to share those?  (Shudder)  Trust me, you will never look at a vampire the same again.

Q10): Is there anything special that either of you would like to say about “Dating the Undead” while we have you with us today?

Gena: The question I’m most asked is “Is this a book or a magazine?”  The answer is it’s a book written in magazine format.  There are articles, fiction stories, pictures of beefcake, quizzes, an excerpt from The Darkest Seduction, and the most hysterical ads.  One of my favorites is Rot Pockets for Zombies!  Can you say: Yummy?

Jill: Yummy!
Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Gena.  Jill.  Thank you so much for being with us today - we’re incredibly excited for “Dating the Undead”! We wish you both the best of luck with not only this, but everything that you each have going on separately as well.  We hope to have you both back for a future appearance very soon…

Gena:  Wouldn't miss it!
Jill: Agreed!  Thanks again!
