Q&A Interview and Giveaway with Sherrilyn Kenyon

SHERRILYN KENYON INTERVIEW

LITERAL ADDICTION and Book Monster Reviews are extremely pleased to welcome the mutli-time, #1 New York Times bestselling author, Sherrilyn Kenyon, to our sites today.

Sherrilyn is referred to as “the preeminent voice in paranormal fiction”, and it has been said that “she not only helped to pioneer, but define the current paranormal trend that has captivated the world”.  She has more than twenty-five million copies of her books in print, in over one hundred countries, and has claimed the coveted #1 bestselling spot sixteen times in just the past three years.

Sherrilyn’s current series include:  THE DARK-HUNTERS, THE LEAGUE, CHRONICLES OF NICK and BELADOR, and there is a new or upcoming release for each of them:  “Retribution” Dark-Hunter book #20 – 8/2/11, Time Untime, Dark-Hunter book #22 - 08/02/12, “Alterant”, Belador book #2 – 9/27/11, “The Guardian”, Dream-Hunter book #5 – 11/1/11, “Infamous”, Chronicles of Nick book #3 – 2/1/12, and “Born of Silence”, League book #5 – 12/27/11.

While Sherrilyn knew she always wanted to be a writer, completing and illustrating her first novel at the age of 7 and selling her first piece of work at the age of 14, life did not always allow her to do what she knew she should be doing.  Because of that, Sherrilyn has also been a D.J, a photographer (with publishing credits in the Washington Post), a store clerk, award winning cook, Golden Glove boxer’s sparring partner, baker, doll maker, painter, football quarterback, camerawoman, secretary, receptionist, freelance journalist, janitor, waitress, teacher, ditch-digger, psychic, web designer, programmer and bookseller.

I’m sure all of you will agree with us when we say that we are VERY thankful that none of those ended up being her final career, and are very glad that she was able to get back to that feeling where writing was what she had to do, as she continues to amaze us book after book, series after series.

Sherrilyn’s muse is a quick one; yet another reason we love her so.  She can write a first draft in three to four weeks, and has been known to completely finish a novel in less than four weeks.  The usual time for a completed work is four to nine months however, so she does have SOME spare time to do the other things she enjoys—playing guitar, flute, piano, and drums, gaming, indulging in all things anime, shopping for her newest article of ‘mature goth’ clothing, and spending time with her husband, 3 sons, and their menagerie of pets.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with Sherrilyn’s history, it’s as heartbreaking as it is inspiring, and deserves to be known just for the sheer fact of the additional respect it allows us to have for both her and her work.  Her full story can be found on her website here, and we suggest you save some time to read it:  http://www.sherrilynkenyon.com/about/history/.

Now however, since we have Sherrilyn with us in such a rare and momentous occasion, what do you say we get to the interview and see what she has to say to our questions…

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Sherrilyn, thank you so very much for being with us today!  We know your schedule is beyond crazy, so it means a lot to us that you are taking time out to answer our questions and bring smiles to our LITERAL ADDICTION and Book Monster families.

Sherrilyn:  Thank you so much for allowing me to get away from my computer for a minute to come and play.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  We usually start by getting to know our guest author a little bit better.  We’ll try to ask questions that will allow you to give answers above and beyond what we can find out on your website…

Q1):  We know that you have graciously shared a lot of your personal history with your fans, but are there 3 things that you can tell us about yourself that we couldn’t find out on the internet?

Sherrilyn:  I am a gourmet chef , certified gemologist, and I collect monkeys.

Q2):  We know that you create playlists for your books.  Who is your personal favorite musical artist?  Do you and your husband have “a song”?

Sherrilyn: My favorite musical artist varies by day and mood. I listen to classical to alternative to thrash metal, but my favorite artist would have to be my brother, Warchild.
Q3):  If you could list 3 things that never fail to make you smile, what would they be?

Sherrilyn: My children/husband, my characters, and my shoes!

Q4):  Do you have a specific routine that you follow when you are writing or anything special you do to get the creative juices flowing?

Sherrilyn:  Ideas hit me whether I am driving down the road or taking a shower. I do write a lot at night time and listen to music.

Q5):  We know where your love or horror and fantasy came from, and that it started at an early age.  What about your clear fascination with mythology?

Sherrilyn: My fascination with mythology started at a young age, too!  I happened upon it in my readings in the third grade.

Q6):  What has been the best compliment you have ever received?

Sherrilyn: I love your books.

Q7):  If they were to make a movie about your life and your career to-date, what do you think it would be called?

Sherrilyn: I’m Not Dead Yet

Q8):  Acheron has become a cult favorite.  We can personally attest to many a conversation being had surrounding that book, character, etc, & an immense number of readers pointed in the Dark-Hunters direction.  Do you have a personal favorite book of the series thus far?  Why do you think it’s your favorite?

Sherrilyn: They’re all my favorite or I wouldn’t write them. I enjoy writing each book I am on, otherwise the character would never have a book.

Q9):  Since BELADOR is the newest series, could you give us a little background for those that haven’t read it yet?

Sherrilyn: It’s a Celtic mythology based paranormal thriller series based upon a league of international warriors with extraordinary abilities rise up to save mankind from supernatural terrorists.

Q10):  Your LEAGUE series was an instant hit as well, yet it is so different from your earlier works.  When did you come up with the idea behind the LEAGUE, and was there a specific inspiration?

Sherrilyn: Actually, I wrote the League series before the Dark-Hunter. The first books were published in the early 90s. I re-edited them for publication in mass market. The characters in the League were my childhood playmates. Other people have invisible friends, I had assassins.

Q11):  We know that the CHRONICLES OF NICK is supposed to be YA, but your adult readers, especially those of us obsessed with the Dark-Hunters, love them as well!  Why did you feel you had to tell Nick’s story separate from the rest?

Sherrilyn: It was always my plan to write a young adult series about Nick. He is an intricate part of the Dark-Hunter Universe. He has a unique story because he fell into the Dark-Hunter world at an early age. There are many mysteries behind Nick and his role in the universe. Once you have read the entire CON series, you will understand the reason the series is devoted to Nick. It couldn’t have been anyone else.

Q12):  There hasn’t been a true Dream-Hunter book since Jericho and Delphine’s book back in 2009.  What made you decide that Seth and Lydia needed there tale told now in “The Guardian”?

Sherrilyn: The reason why there was a gap between the Dream-Hunter books is I was working on another Dream-Hunter book when the idea for “The Guardian” hit.  Seth is a character who came to me with a vengeance. He was so strong in my mind and his character literally infiltrated my brain until his story was written. I wanted to share him with my fans because he was a strong presence once he emerged.

Q13):  When the Dark-Hunter tales finally come to a close <GASP!> what is the legacy you hope to leave your readers with?

Sherrilyn: There is always hope no matter how bleak it seems. Tomorrow will come and you have to keep fighting the good fight. Only you control your own destiny. Don’t listen to the detractors. Be true to yourself and your vision. Live a life that makes you proud. Outlive the bitches!

Q14):  If you were having a celebration and could invite a mix of characters from each of your series to celebrate with you, who would you invite and what would you do?

Sherrilyn: Caillen, Darling, Simi, Ash, Garafyn, Stryker, Bubba, Bubba’s Momma, Samia, Shahara, and Mark. We would go to Disneyworld!

Q15):  Do you have any desires to pursue getting Dark-Hunters picked up for TV?

Sherrilyn: I am actually working with Amber Entertainment which is the team behind such mega blockbusters as Lord of the Rings, Golden Compass and many more. They’ll be bringing the Chronicles of Nick to the big screen as a major motion picture release and the Dark-Hunter series to TV. Keep an eye on my site for more details. And you can read about it here: http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118040186

Q16):  Simi is a favorite of well…just about everyone, and has won many a ‘Best Sidekick’ poll with no contest.  How did she come about in your imagination, and do you find that she has you smiling just as much as the rest of us?

Sherrilyn:  Ever been on a road trip with someone you thought you liked? Yeah, me too. Simi was born during just such an ordeal. As I pretended to sleep so that I wouldn’t have to talk to said person, I kept thinking, “What I need is a snarky demon... with barbecue sauce.” And as I wrote the Dark-Hunter stories, I knew Simi would be perfect for Acheron.

Q17):  You write about New Orleans with vivid clarity, so much so, that you had some of us re-reading the books and making a list so that we could visit all of the places when went this fall.  Is it a special city for you personally?

Sherrilyn: Yes, New Orleans is very dear to me. No matter where I live, I always consider it home.

Q18):  Do you think that the Dark-Hunters saga will ever truly die or do you have enough side ideas to keep us all happy with novellas and eReads well into the future?

Sherrilyn:  I started the series with the idea for 45 individual books. Out of the 45, I have only written three. I have more ideas than I can ever get written.

Q19):  We ask this of all our guest authors… What 1 question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview but never have been, and how would you answer it?

Sherrilyn: What is it like to have won the multi-billion dollar lottery? I will answer it with it feels pretty amazing. Now excuse me, I need to go write.

Q20):  Is there anything that you’d like to say to your readers while we have you here today?

Sherrilyn: Thanks so much to my readers. I can’t tell you how much it means to me to have so many of you willing to join me on my adventures to other realms. Most of all, you can’t imagine how much it means to me to have other people love my imaginary friends as much as I do.
LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Thank you once again Sherrilyn for taking time to answer our questions and make A LOT of our members and followers incredibly happy.  We will do everything we can to make sure that people go out and get “Retribution”, “Alterant”, and “The Guardian”, though you really don’t need our help, your books sell themselves!  ;-)  Good luck with everything coming through the end of the year and beyond, and know that you have a huge fanbase right here at LITERAL ADDICTION and Book Monster pulling for you every step of the way!

Sherrilyn: Thank you so much for having me. I enjoyed talking with you all.

Wonderful interview and I love hearing that you were a collector of jobs, Sherrilyn, I don't feel so odd now. I was even a dollmaker at one time, too - perhaps this a good omen that I may eventually get published. Btw, I voted for you on Goodreads. : )

Normally they ask where that came from and then you get another wonderful fan who again gets soo much out of your books. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us today. Hi everyone!!

Sorry I couldn't make it over here sooner. Will try my best to stop by a few times tomorrow.

My oldest baby was scheduled for surgery yesterday and we moved only a couple of weeks ago. The new house, which was a couple of years old, has had some major wiring issues and the guys haven't been able to give me a stable internet connection in weeks. Since we live so far out in the boonies, there's no cell reception either. Ugh! If I ever move again, shoot me.

But thank you all so much for your kind words. Y'all are the absolute best!!

Hugs!
