Q&A Interview and Giveaway with Kalayna Price

Happy Tuesday everyone!  LITERAL ADDICTION and Book Monster Reviews are very happy to welcome Kalayna Price to our sites today!

Kalayna has always been an avid reader and dreamer. At ten she raided her father's fantasy fiction bookcase and her already active imagination went into hyperdrive. Her first love was for the epic adventures and mythical races and creatures of high fantasy, but she has always been drawn to things that go bump in the night. It is that darker side of fantasy where she currently devotes her words.

She is the USA Today Bestselling author of two dark urban fantasy series: the Alex Craft novels and the novels of Haven, both of which have been translated into several languages and are available all over the world.

The Haven Novels, consisting of ONCE BITTEN (January 2009), TWICE DEAD (February 2010), and THIRD BLOOD (2012), follow the story of Kita Nekai, a kitten shapeshifter on the run from her clan and responsibilities, who is turned into a vampire and entangled in the supernatural underworld. She thought it was hard being the smallest shape shifter? Being a dead one sucks. Literally. The Alex Craft novels consist thus far of GRAVE WITCH (October 2010) and GRAVE DANCE (July 2011). The third book, GRAVE MEMORY, is scheduled for release in 2012. The novels follow series title character, Alex Craft, who is a broke magic-eye for hire who speaks to the dead. In the first book, Grave Witch, a case with a sexy reaper, a dark cop, and a ghost-silencing killer has more than Alex's rent on the line—it may cost her soul.

Kalayna draws her ideas from the world around her, her studies into ancient mythologies, and her readings of classic folklore. Her stories contain not only the mystical elements of fantasy, but also a dash of romance, a bit of gritty horror, some humor, and a large serving of mystery.

While we gave you some information on Kalayna’s fabulous books above, for the sake of this intro, let’s give you the full synopses of them, shall we!?

“Grave Witch”, ALEX CRAFT Book #1:
Grave witch Alex Craft can speak to the dead, but that doesn’t mean she likes what they have to say . . .

As a private investigator and consultant for the police, Alex Craft has seen a lot of dark magic. But even though she’s on good terms with Death himself—who happens to look fantastic in a pair of jeans—nothing has prepared her for her latest case. Alex is investigating a high profile murder when she’s attacked by the ‘shade’ she’s raising, which should be impossible. To top off her day, someone makes a serious attempt on her life, but Death saves her. Guess he likes having her around . . .
To solve this case Alex will have to team up with tough homicide detective Falin Andrews. Falin seems to be hiding something—though it’s certainly not his dislike of Alex—but Alex knows she needs his help to navigate the tangled webs of mortal and paranormal politics, and to track down a killer wielding a magic so malevolent, it may cost Alex her life . . . and her soul.

“Grave Dance” ALEX CRAFT Book #2:
(KALAYNA: Warning, this blurb contains spoilers for events in book 1)
Whoever said dead men tell no tales obviously never met Alex Craft.
After a month spent recovering from a vicious fight with a sorcerer, grave witch Alex Craft is ready to get back to solving murders by raising the dead. With her love life in turmoil thanks to the disappearance of Fae Investigation Bureau agent Falin Andrews and a shocking “L” word confession from Death himself, Alex is eager for the distractions of work. But her new case turns out to be a deadly challenge.
The police hire Alex to consult on a particularly strange investigation in the nature preserve south of Nekros City. The strange part: There are no corpses, only fragments of them. A serial killer is potentially on the loose, and Alex has no way to raise a shade without a body, so she’ll have to rely on the magic of others to find leads. But as she begins investigating, a creature born of the darkest magic comes after her. Someone very powerful wants to make sure the only thing she finds is a dead end—her own.

 “Once Bitten” HAVEN Book #1:
For the past five years, Kita Nekai has faded into the background of the human world, but when a rogue shifter begins littering the city of Haven with bodies, Kita's illegal status lands her on the suspect list. During a confrontation with hunters that she can't win, rescue arrives in the form of the mysterious Nathanial Deaton. Kita soon wishes it hadn't when his method of saving her leaves her undead. With only three nights to prove her innocence and a new liquid diet to worry about, Kita doesn't want to deal with her infuriating rescuer or the ghost from her past who is determined to drag her back home. But, she needs help if she's going to stand any chance of survival.

“Twice Dead” HAVEN Book #2:
Kita is adjusting to her new liquid diet--an adjustment she rather resents. Not that everything was chocolate and sunshine before (though both were possible before the sexy but infuriating Nathanial sank his fangs in her business). Kita's ability to shape shift into a kitten when her peers shifted into lions and tigers complicated her life, to say the least, but getting stuck in one form--that of a human shaped tick, a.k.a. a vampire--sucks, literally. Her adjustment period is violently interrupted when she discovers a headless corpse during a party for a visiting vampire council. But, the headless dancer won't be the only corpse she encounters.
Kita's involvement draws the attention of the Collector, an ancient vampire with an inclination to acquire two things: power and oddities. As a pureblood shifter turned vampire, Kita ranks high on the collectability list--not a safe place for anyone who values her freedom, and Kita is not the only one on the list. But with the body count rising, there is more at stake than freedom. A killer is slithering through the underbelly of Haven's vampire community, and with the supernaturals dealing in unnamed favors, it's a bad time to be a kitten who can't slip her skin.

“Third Blood” HAVEN Book #3 Synopsis [COMING SOON]:
Going home after five years is difficult. It's harder still if you've changed species in the interim.
Kita Nekai, once the smallest shifter in Firth but now the newest vampire in the city of Haven, has no intention of returning home or informing her father and clan what she's become. Not that she has a choice. When the mage who holds her death certificate in his hands demands Kita return to Firth as his errand runner, she has to comply. Of course, there is no leaving her sire, Nathanial, behind. Which means introducing daddy dearest to the man—well, vampire—she may be falling for and confessing that she's lost the ability to shift. Talk about awkward.
Her homecoming goes from bad to worse when an attempt is made on her life, and Kita finds herself facing an unknown threat in a hostile world she never fit into in the first place. Can she survive long enough to complete the judge's task, stand trial before the elders for the rogues she created while on the run, and help defend her father's territory from an encroaching band of misfit shifters? Or is this cat down to her last life?

Well, we’re sure that was enough to peak your interest and get you excited to learn some more about these action packed, fabulous books, but what do you say we learn some more about the author behind them first?

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Hi Kalayna!  We’re very happy to have you here today, and are very excited to introduce some new readers to your fabulous ALEX CRAFT and HAVEN series!
KALAYNA: Thank you! I’m thrilled to be here and I’m looking forward to the live chat.
LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  We always start out by getting to know our guest author a little bit better.

Q1): Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we couldn’t find out easily on the Internet?
KALAYNA: Let’s see, I’m fairly open online, so I guess I’ll go with really random facts.
-Haribo gummy bears are my biggest weakness—love them!
-I paint my nails because I like the way the polish catches the light when I type.
-I have a stuffed tiger that I sleep with, even when I travel.

Q2):  What are 3 things that always make you smile?
KALAYNA: The three cats and two dogs who rule my house, Smart Cars. (I don’t know why, but I’m always amused to spot one on the street. They’re just so cute and tiny), and a kickass pair of boots.

Q3):  What’s your favorite inspirational quote?
KALAYNA: I’d love to share something deep and touching—and I’ve heard plenty of those—but honestly, while I might read an awesome quote and think it’s amazingly clever/motivating/etc. I don’t collect them or post them on my computer or anything. So, as I’m sitting here stretching for some great quote, all I can come up with are things from the internet meme Courage Wolf. If you’re not familiar with Courage Wolf, google it. They tend toward ridiculous, but they’ve become a sort of rally call that a friend and I exchange when things are tough.

Q4):  What are some of your hobbies and/or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?

KALAYNA: Reading, but I guess that’s sort of a given, huh? Well, right now one of my biggest hobbies is hoop dance. I’ve been hooping for two and a half years or so, and it’s not only tons of fun, but great exercise and a good excuse to hang out with friends. I also enjoy gardening, painting, playing video games, and the occasional bout of costuming and jewelry making. I might have too many hobbies.

Q5):  Is there a book in your series so far that happens to be your personal favorite; maybe one that has special meaning for you, etc?

KALAYNA: Every book I’ve written has been a favorite at some point. I’m almost always most excited about the book I just finished or the one I’m about to start.

Q6):  Who are a few of your personal favorite authors, and what are a couple titles in your TBR pile/list right now?
KALAYNA: My TBR pile is a scary sight as the pace in which I buy books is much faster than that in which I read them. Many of my TBR books are by authors I adore and I’m embarrassed to say how long they’ve been waiting to move up in line. Other books skip the queue because I just can’t wait to read them. While I have a lot of favorite authors (far too many to list), I can tell you that the last couple books to skip the TBR pile have been by Illona Andrews, Karen Chance, and Chloe Neill.

Q7):  What are the best and worst parts of writing for you?

KALAYNA: If we’re talking about the process, I’d have to say it the absolute best is when the scenes are working, the characters are coming alive in my mind, the story is unfolding on the page, and I’m so caught up in it that I hit a bliss-like zone. Of course, the reverse would the worst part: when the scenes won’t progress, the characters fall flat, and every word draws blood. If we’re talking about writing as a career, by far the coolest thing is when readers discuss my characters like the characters are real people they care about.

Q8):  What is a typical writing day like for you?  Do you have a routine that you follow?  Are there specific things that you have to have with you to get the creative juices flowing, etc?
KALAYNA: I’ve never really had a writing ritual or routine. I’ve had trends that may last a couple months, but I tend to change things up a lot. The only constant for me is music. Silence drives me crazy, so whether I’m writing in my office during ‘normal’ business hours, in my bed in the wee hours of the night, at a coffee shop, a bookstore, or even the zoo, I will always have music.

Q9):  If you could spend the day with any of your characters, who would you want to spend it with, and what would you want to do?
KALAYNA: Oh, now that is a dangerous question. I think I’ll dodge and just say that I spend most days with my characters as I get their story on the page. ^_^

Q10):  Can you tell us a little bit more about “Third Blood”, Book #3 of the HAVEN series?

KALAYNA: Third Blood will end the first arc of the series, which follows Kita’s growth from the very immature and emotionally stunted girl the reader meets in the first book to who she has to become to survive the challenges that await her in the third. Everything thus far has been building up to this, and I can’t wait for it to hit shelves and see what people think.

Q11):  How many books do you have planned for each of the series – ALEX CRAFT and HAVEN?
KALAYNA: The Haven novels have two main arcs. As I said, Third Blood will complete the first arc, and I anticipate the second to wrap up in three books as well, so the series will end at six books. The Alex Craft novels are in the air at the moment. Grave Memory, which will be released next year, is the last book I’m currently contracted for, but I still have a lot of story to tell so I hope Roc will want to buy more.

Q12):  What can we expect as each of the series progress?
KALAYNA: Bigger stakes, tougher choices, and dangerous secrets. Neither of these girls (or any of the other characters) will get to a happy ending the easy way. But, that’s a given for any series, isn’t it? (What, did you expect spoilers? Sorry, you’ll have to wait!)

Q13):  What’s up next for Kalayna Price?  Do you have anything else in the works outside of these 2 series that you can share with us?
KALAYNA: I have a couple stories lurking in the wings, but for now I’m giving my full focus to my current series.

Q14):  Is there a question that you’ve thought it would be great to be asked in an interview but have never been asked?  How would you answer that question?

KALAYNA: I’d be a terrible interviewer. Invent a world, some characters, and a story? Sure, no problem! Come up with an interesting question? Yeah, no. I’ve got nothing.

Q15):  Is there anything special that you’d like to say to your readers while we have you here today?

KALAYNA: I definitely want to tell everyone out there who has read the books Thank You! I couldn’t have made it this far without you.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Kalayna, thank you so much for being with us today.  We’re very happy to help you promote both of your amazing series and let people know about your upcoming work as well.  We’d love to have you back again in the future for another new release if you’re interested!? ;-)
KALAYNA: Definitely! I look forward to it.
