Hello everyone! LITERAL ADDICTION and Book Monster Reviews are proud to welcome Rachel Vincent to our sites today!
BLOOD BOUND (Unbound, book 1), the first in Rachel's new adult paranormal series, just debuted September 1, 2011.
A new resident of San Antonio, Rachel has a BA in English and an overactive imagination, and she consistently finds the latter to be more practical. She shares her workspace with two black cats (Kaci and Nyx) and her # 1 fan. Rachel is older than she looks-seriously-and younger than she feels, but remains convinced that for every day she spends writing, one more day will be added to her lifespan.
For those of you not yet familiar with Rachel’s work, we thought we’d give you the synopsis of a few of the books in the series (specifically the first and most recent installments):

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews: Hi Rachel! We’re very happy to have you here today, and are excited to help you promote your entire backlist and especially your brand new series, UNBOUND.
RACHEL: Thanks so much for having me!
LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews: We like to start out by finding out a bit more about our guest author, and then we’ll dig into the book and series…
Q1): Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we couldn’t find out easily on the Internet?
RACHEL: Um…I’ve never listened to any of my own audiobooks. I don’t like cooked vegetables. And I have absolutely no sense of style.
Q2): Did anyone or anything special inspire you to become an author?
RACHEL: Nope. I’ve always loved writing. But I was twenty-six before I realized I might actually have a chance at writing for a living.
Q3): What are 3 things that never fail to make you smile?
RACHEL: The smell of coffee brewing. The word “wasabi.” A swimming pool.
Q4): What are some of your hobbies or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?
RACHEL: Baking. Movies. Video games.
Q5): What’s your favorite inspirational quote?
RACHEL: I have no idea. I’m not a big quote collector.
Q6): Who are some of your favorite authors, and what are a few titles in your TBR pile right now?
RACHEL: I’m in the middle of Jennifer Lynn Barnes’s Every Other Day right now, and I’ve got a HUGE pile of other urban fantasy and YA titles waiting to be read.
Q7): If they were to make a movie of your life, what do you think it’d be called?
RACHEL: Boring. ;)
Q8): What’s it like writing across the different segments of the genre?
Q9): Was there any specific inspiration behind the creation of the 3 series?
RACHEL: They’re all a collision of several ideas. Mythology, plus a character type I always wanted to try. The Unbound series specifically came about from my interest in a literal interpretation of the phrase, “a man’s word is his bond.”
Q10): Can you give us a little bit of info about the 3 series in your own words – a couple paragraphs on ‘why we should read these’?
RACHEL: I tend to get obsessed with certain themes, and I write about them until I feel like I’ve explored all angles. My most common themes are self-identity, independence, and fighting for those who can’t fight for themselves. The Shifters series was about a female werecat carving a place for herself in a highly patriarchal society. It’s very much a coming-of-age and a fight-the-power kind of series.
Soul Screamers is a young adult urban fantasy series about a sixteen year old who discovers she’s a bean sidhe, a death herald. She has a driving need to help people and discovers bits of who she really is along the way. Those books get darker and more complex as the series progresses.
Unbound is a trilogy based in a world where some people—the Skilled—have abilities which make them wanted by various factions of Skilled mafia. This world explores the decisions we make when there are no good options. All three books are about sacrifice. About what we’d be willing to give up to protect those we love. These books are very dark and gritty. And violent. And, according to my editor, twisted. ;)
Q11): What’s a typical work day like for you? Do you have a writing routine or things you absolutely cannot go through your day without?
RACHEL: It depends on what I’m working on at the time. There’s always several hours of email/social networking/promo. And if I’m working on a rough draft, I make my wordcount goal in several one-hour spurts. If I’m doing revisions or edits, I tend to work much longer hours, because I really have to be buried in the story, for consistency and tone. When I’m plotting or brainstorming, I tend to walk around in a fog, jotting down random notes about concepts, characters, and plot as I think of them. Then, when I’m ready, I get it all sorted out on a white board. Then in a synopsis.
Q12): How many books do you have planned for the UNBOUND series?
RACHEL: There will be three. Shadow Bound, the second, comes out June 1, 2012.
Q13): Can you share with us anything else that you might have in the works outside of these 3 series?
RACHEL: Not at the moment. I usually have a side project or short fiction going, but nothing I can really talk about yet.
Q14): Are there more books planned for the SHIFTERS or SOUL SCREAMERS series?
RACHEL: The Shifters series is done. I’m contracted for seven Soul Screamers books (the sixth, Before I Wake, comes out July 1, 2012) and I’ve also done a bit of short fiction in that world.
Q15): Are there any specific messages within the books and/or series that you’re hoping to get across to your readers?
RACHEL: No. I don’t write to send a message. I do explore a number of issues, but it’s up to the reader to take what they will from the book. I’m not in it to preach.
Q16): What were some of the challenges you encountered while writing “Blood Bound”?
RACHEL: SO many challenges. For the first time, I’m writing from two different first person points of view, and I was still puzzling my way through that in Blood Bound, so the POV is uneven. It’s much better in Shadow Bound. But in addition to that, the world building and plots are very detailed and complex, which means that these books are a lot of work. Lots of details to keep straight, and two new heads to get inside of with each book.
Q17): What surprises have you encountered in your career thus far?
RACHEL: Um…ebooks have been the biggest surprise. Other than that, not much is surprising. I did my research before I started querying agents, so I knew pretty much what I’d be getting into.
Q18): Is there a question that you have always wanted to be asked in an interview but have never been asked? How would you answer that question?
RACHEL: Not that I can think of. ;)
Q19): A long way off in the future, when you decide to retire and stop writing, what thoughts do you hope to have when you look back on the legacy you left behind and your career in general?
RACHEL: I hope that my books have made people think. I hope they’ve made people argue and see both sides of an issue. I hope my books were hard to put down, and even harder to forget. I’m still working on all of that, though. ;)
Q20): Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers (both new and old) while we have you here today?
RACHEL: Thanks so much for reading!
