Q&A Interview and Giveaway with Keri Arthur

Hello everyone!  LITERAL ADDICTION and Book Monster Reviews are very happy to welcome the incredibly talented Keri Arthur to our sites today!

Keri is a born and bred Australia girl and grew up sharing her life with dragons, elves, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, and the occasional talking horse.   This, of course, worried her family to no end.  Though now that she’s successfully making her living dealing with those same type of creatures, they don’t think it’s so crazy anymore.  J

She’s a New York Times bestselling author, and has now written more than 25 books.  She’s also received several nominations in the Best Contemporary Paranormal category of the Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Awards, and recently won RT’s Career Achievement Award for Urban Fantasy.

Keri is the proud creator of the RILEY JENSON, GUARDIAN, MYTH AND MAGIC, NIKKI AND MICHAEL, RIPPLE CREEK WEREWOLF, SPOOK SQUAD and DAMASK CIRCLE series, as well as the newly established RILEY JENSON spin-off series, DARK ANGELS.

The RILEY JENSON, GUARDIAN series has 9 books - “Full Moon Rising”, “Kissing Sin”, “Tempting Evil”, “Dangerous Games”, “Embraced by Darkness”, “The Darkest Kiss”, “Deadly Desire”, “Bound to Shadows” and “Moon Sworn”.

The MYTH AND MAGIC series has 2 books – “Destiny Kills”, and “Mercy Burns”.

The NIKKI AND MICHAEL series has 4 installments – “Dancing with the Devil”, “Hearts in Darkness”, “Chasing the Shadows”, and “Kiss the Night Goodbye”.

Her RIPPLE CREEK WEREWOLF series has 2 books like the MYTH AND MAGIC series – “Beneath a Rising Moon” and “Beneath a Darkening Moon”.

SPOOK SQUAD is comprised of 3 titles – “Memory Zero”, “Generation 18”, and “Penumbra”.

DAMASK CIRCLE is made up of “Circle of Fire”, “Circle of Death” and “Circle of Desire”.

Her latest series, DARK ANGELS, is a spin-off of RILEY JENSON, GUARDIAN, and has a new release, “Darkness Unbound”, which was just dropped on 9/27/11, and another that is set to be released this month, “Darkness Rising”.  Book #3, “Darkness Devours”, is tentatively scheduled with a release date of June 5, 2012.
ALL of Keri’s books are incredible, and we highly recommend you check them all out!  They’re full of intrigue, steamy romance, action and amazing storyline…  But for the sake of this intro, though it’s an admittedly feeble attempt, we figured we’d give any new readers the synopses for the first and last RILEY JENSON, GUARDIAN novels, as well as the new and upcoming DARK ANGEL books, since those 2 are the ones we are here to help her promote and celebrate.

“Full Moon Rising”, RILEY JENSON, GUARDIAN Book #1 Synopsis:
A rare hybrid of vampire and werewolf, Riley Jenson and her twin brother, Rhoan, work for Melbourne’s Directorate of Other Races, an organization created to police the supernatural races–and protect humans from their depredations. While Rhoan is an exalted guardian, a.k.a. assassin, Riley is merely an office worker–until her brother goes missing on one of his missions. The timing couldn’t be worse. More werewolf than vampire, Riley is vulnerable to the moon heat, the weeklong period before the full moon, when her need to mate becomes all-consuming.…

Luckily Riley has two willing partners to satisfy her every need. But she will have to control her urges if she’s going to find her brother….Easier said than done as the city pulses with frenzied desire, and Riley is confronted with a very powerful–and delectably naked–vamp who raises her temperature like never before.

In matters carnal, Riley has met her match. But in matters criminal, she must follow her instincts not only to find her brother but to stop an unholy harvest. For someone is doing some shifty cloning in an attempt to produce the ultimate warrior–by tapping into the genome of nonhumans like Rhoan. Now Riley knows just how dangerous the world is for her kind–and just how much it needs her.

“Moon Sworn”, RILEY JENSON, GUARDIAN Book #9 Synopsis:
Shape-shifting werewolf and vampire Riley Jenson is through with death–causing it, solving it, surviving it. Her soul mate, Kye Murphy, is dead–and at Riley’s own hands. Not even the seductive embrace of her vampire lover, Quinn, can fully ease her mind, for she has begun questioning everything that makes her Riley–including her job at the Directorate.

Now, the ritualistically slain bodies of ex-cons have started turning up. Reluctantly, Riley takes the case, but something even worse is waiting in the wings. For a vicious enemy from her past is determined to strip Riley of everything that gives her life any meaning: her lover, her brother–and even her own identity. Can Riley survive this ultimate assault? All she knows is, she must fight one last time to find answers, before everything goes dark forever…

“Darkness Unbound”, DARK ANGELS Book #1 Synopsis:
Risa Jones is as extraordinary as her heritage. Born from a lab-enhanced clone mother and an Aedh father, she can not only talk to the souls of the dying and the dead, but she can see the reapers and walk the gray fields that divide this world from the next.

They are skill she rarely uses, however, preferring to concentrate on the business she shares with her two best friends. But when her mother asks her to help the parents of a little girl locked in a coma, she reluctantly agrees. What she discovers scares the hell out of her. Because the little girl’s soul no longer resides in her body, and it wasn’t death and the reapers that took her.

Someone had ripped her soul from her flesh.

As it turns out, a creature consuming the souls of the innocent–and not so innocent–is the least of her problems.

Because someone wants to rip open the gates that divided hell from earth, and Risa is a key component in their plans.

And the only person standing between her and disaster is a reaper who isn’t exactly on her side.

“Darkness Rising”, DARK ANGELS Book #2 Info:
Sometimes when a writer gets involved in writing a series, a minor character comes along that catches the writer's imagination and demands that their story be told. When I wrote Tempting Evil, I had no idea that the baby girl with violet eyes and who seemed to understand far too much for a child that young was going to be one of those characters. In fact, she wasn't even supposed to come back into the series.

But appear she did in Embraced by Darkness (RILEY JENSON, GUARDIAN Book #5). By then, Risa was a toddler who not only loved going as fast as possible on her plastic train, but one who, even at such a young age, could see death.

But what sort of world would someone who could see death and walk through the gray fields inhabit? It wouldn't be the world of vampires, werewolves, and the Directorate. Someone who saw the spectre of death as an everyday occurrence wouldn't willingly step into a life that was filled with those things--and Riley wasn't ever likely to let any child she loved get drawn into the Directorate when she knew just how dangerous it could be.

Of course, the key phrase there is, wouldn't willingly'.

And that became my jumping off point for the series. That, and Risa's heritage.

Because Risa's parents could never be considered normal. Her mom--Dia--isn't only a powerful psychic, but a lab-created Helki werewolf capable of shapeshifting her appearance as easily as she took on wolf form. But Risa's ability to walk the grey fields and see death--or rather, the reapers--came from her father, who was an Aedh.

If reapers are the beings who guide souls to heaven or hell, then the Aedh are the gatekeepers. Like the reapers, they're not flesh and blood beings, although they can attain that form if they wish. In flesh form, the reapers appear human, but the Aedh are winged creatures of immense beauty and power. They're also cold and clinical, possessing little in the way of human emotion.

And I began to wonder, what would happen if the gatekeepers were either no longer able to guard the gates, or better yet, no longer wanted to?

What if they decided it would be simpler to permanently close the gates to heaven and hell, not only stopping demons from escaping, but souls from moving on?

What if keys that were created to permanently lock the gates went missing before they could be used, and the only person who could find them again was a blood relative of the man who had stolen them--Risa's father.

And what if it wasn't only the Aedh and the reapers who were now looking for the keys, but a high vampire council who'd suddenly decided hell might just make an ideal prison...

We know, it’s not nearly enough, and we STRONGLY suggest that all new readers check out the synopses for her entire backlist by clicking on any of the incredible Cover Art images here: , but for now, it’s going to have to do, because we would really like to get to the interview and learn some more about the amazing author behind these fantastic books, and hear some more about them directly from her.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Hi Keri!  We’re so proud to have you here today, and are very excited to help you promote the new DARK ANGELS series!
KERI: Thanks for inviting me here!

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  We always like to start by getting to know our guest author a little bit better.

Q1): Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we couldn’t find out easily on the Internet?

KERI: I'm addicted to reading Regency Romances. I love shoes and boots, and have far too many of both. I love Midsomer Murders and have watched all 86 episodes.

Q2):  What are 3 things that never fail to make you smile?

KERI: My daughter, my dogs, and cake. Any sort of cake.

Q3):  If the world were to end tomorrow, what would you do in your last 24 hours?

KERI: eat as much damn chocolate as I wanted!

Q4):  What are some of your hobbies and/or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?
KERI: Aside from watching more TV than is probably healthy, I have a stunning garden and can often be found in it trying to stop the weeds from taking over. I'm also a hobbyist photographer, and love driving around taking pics.

Q5):  If you could spend the day with any of your characters, who would you want to spend it with, and what would you want to do?
KERI: Tao, one of Risa's friends in the Dark Angels series. Not only is he a seriously sexy werewolf, but he's also a chef. When he's not loving me, he could be cooking for me  :)

Q6):  Who are some of your favorite authors, and what are a couple titles in your TBR pile/list right now?
KERI: Favorite authors include James Herbert, Dick Francis, Eloisa James, Anne Gracie, Julia Quinn and Loretta Chase. Right now on my TBR pile there's Jenna Black's Dark Descent and Kelly Hunter's The Man she loves to Hate

Q7):  With Fantasy being such a popular genre these days, what made you choose it, and what about it fascinates you personally?
KERI: I've always read fantasy, whether it be about elves and dwarves or talking horses, so I guess it was natural that that's what I'd write. But it wasn't until Mercedes Lackey's Children of the Night that I realized Urban Fantasy is what I should be writing.

Q8):  What is your favorite type of scene to write – action, dialogue, sex, etc?

KERI: Action! Although I love writing dialogue too—I love a good verbal sparring scene (just finished one of those, actually!)

Q9):  What is a typical writing day like for you?  Do you have a routine that you follow?  Are there specific things that you have to have with you to get the creative juices flowing, etc?
KERI: My days are basically regimented. I walk the dogs then go to the gym in the morning, and I write in the afternoon. And I always write to the same piece of music—Eco Zen 2. I'm so used to having it running in the background now that the minute I hear it the mind goes into writing mode.

Q10):  What’s your favorite inspirational quote?
KERI: I could give up chocolate but I'm not a quitter. ;)

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  O.K, now we’ll ask some questions directly related to books…  J

Q11):  It’s obvious that Risa grabbed your attention and demanded her own series.  Why do you think that is?  What made you want to tell her story (or elaborate on it) so badly?
KERI: Some characters just come alive on the page and Risa was one of those. From the moment she appeared on that little train, cho-chooing around the house with her pigtails flying, I knew she would have her own series.

Q12):  Do you have a personal favorite series of yours so far; maybe one that has deeper meaning for you, etc?
KERI: I have two favorites—The Nikki & Michael series because Dancing with the Devil was the first book I ever had published, and the Riley Jenson series because it was this series that gave me a New York publisher and made me a New York Times bestseller.

Q13):  Do you have any plans to write any more books in any of your other series – MYTH AND MAGIC, DAMASK CIRCLE, SPOOK SQUAD, NIKKI AND MICHAEL or RIPPLE CREEK WEREWOLF?

KERI:  The short answer is no. There were supposed to be extra books in all of those series except for Nikki & Michael, but I doubt they'll every get written. I simply haven't got the time. Plus, they were all written a few years ago now, and I've basically lost the feel for the worlds.

Q14):  How many books do you have planned for the DARK ANGELS series?

KERI: Originally it was five, but it now looks as if there will be at least 7. I'm not very good at sticking to outlines. lol

Q15):  What can we expect as the series progresses?

KERI: bloodshed, mayham, sex....all the usual good stuff.

Q16):  Will we get additional glimpses into the lives of ‘Aunt Riley’ and the rest of the gang from the RILEY JENSON, GUARDIAN series as the DARK ANGELS series progresses?
KERI: Very definitely. The entire gang makes regular guest appearances (although not always together), but Rhoan features in every book, as he's still a guardian.

Q17):  Can you share with us anything else that you might have in the works outside of DARK ANGELS?
KERI: I'm currently working on an urban fantasy with a phoenix heroine, as well as another urban fantasy set far into the future featuring a lab-created warrior who is the last of her kind.

Q18):  What legacy do you hope to leave behind in your work?

KERI: Enjoyment. Seriously, if people can sit down and get happily lost reading my books for a couple of hours, then I've done my job.

Q19):  Is there a question that you’ve thought it would be great to be asked in an interview but have never been asked?  How would you answer that question?
KERI: I think I've been asked just about everything I could think of already!

Q20):  Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers while we have you here today?
KERI: Hope you enjoy the Dark Angels series as much as you did the Riley Jenson series!

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Keri, thank you so much for being with us today!  We’re VERY excited to help you promote the DARK ANGELS series and cannot wait to see what else you have in store.  We’d love to have you back for the releases of “Darkness Devours” if you’re interested!?
KERI: More than happy to come back!
