Hello everyone! Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are proud to welcome Caris Roane to our sites today!
For some mystical, magickal reason, early in the process, her vampires appeared with enormous beautiful wings. She says that it has been amazing to include flight in her novels, in both battle scenes and scenes involving spectacle.
Her special vampire world, THE WORLD OF ASCENSION, published by St. Martin’s Press, is introduced in the first book of the series, “Ascension”. The second book, “Burning Skies” opens up the world a little bit more, and the third and newest release, “Wings of Fire”, was just dropped in September. The fourth book of THE WORLD OF ASCENSION series, “Born of Ashes”, is due out January 3, 2012.
For those of you not yet familiar with THE WORLD OF ASCENSION we thought we’d give you the synopses of the three available books of the series.
“Burning Skies” Synopsis:
They sound incredible right! What do you say we get to the interview and learn some more about this incredibly talented author and her World of Ascension, shall we!?
LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews: Hi Caris! We’re very happy to have you here today, and are excited to help you promote “Wings of Fire” and your GUARDIANS OF ASCENSION series!
CARIS: I’m thrilled to be here! Thank you for having me!
LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews: We like to start out by finding out a bit more about our guest author, and then we’ll dig into the books…
Q1): Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we couldn’t find out easily on the Internet?
CARIS: I worked as a tour guide at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA, many moons ago. (No, don’t ask!) I studied French in college, but I’m not fluent…L I have an unfulfilled desire to paint landscapes in oils.
Q2): What are 3 things that never fail to make you smile?
CARIS: My cats being squirrelly, Endelle (a badass character from my Guardians of Ascension series), and the anticipation of getting to write the next novel!
Q3): What are some of your hobbies or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not working, writing or taking care of other business?
CARIS: Going to the movies, going out to dinner, and leisurely working my way through Barnes & Noble.
Q4): Who are some of your favorite authors, and what’s in your TBR pile right now?
CARIS: I just finished Laurell K. Hamilton’s, HIT LIST. And I’m really looking forward to a women’s fiction novel by Marisa de los Santos called, FALLING TOGETHER. She’s one of my favs.
Q5): If you could spend the day with one of your characters, who would you want it to be, and what would you want to do?
CARIS: I would love to spend a day with Endelle. She’s been so much fun to write, so I’d love to hear everything she’d say in the course of an entire day. I mean, can you imagine? I’d probably pick up some new profane expressions and blush one minute out of two, but it would be awesome. As for what we would do…take to the air, of course!
Q6): What are your favorite scenes to write (dialogue, love, action, etc)?
CARIS: I’ll make a confession, but I really do enjoy writing love scenes…there, I’ve said it. I don’t know about other authors, but I think it’s a kick in the pants especially since each couple is so different and they always surprise me…always!
Q7): What’s your favorite inspirational quote?
CARIS: “Make some magic”. When I sit down to write, I say that to myself. Now that makes me smile…every time.
Q8): What are the best and worst parts of writing for you?
CARIS: The best part of writing for me is when I’m totally in the groove, when I’m feelin’ the scene, feelin’ the tension, feelin’ the character, when I know where I want the scene to go and exactly how I want it to end…that’s just BLISS! As for the worst part, easy question to answer. There’s this point in my process when basically I’ve finished writing every scene of the book, but now I need to start on page 1, go through to the end, and clean it up! I think it’s such a different function from all the glory and chaos of invention, that my brain takes about 3 solid days to make a shift from creativity to editing. During that time, I look at my window and visualize throwing my computer out, oh, about a hundred times! *sigh* But then, thank-you-God, I make this mental shift and I’m good again. But for those three days, honestly…it’s like my skin’s on fire!
Q9): With Fantasy being such a popular genre these days, what about it fascinates and draws you personally?
CARIS: I guess I just love the idea of ‘possibility’. What if such a world existed? How great would that be? I mean in my series, all vampires eventually mount wings and fly. How awsesome would it be to be able to fly!
Q10): What’s a typical work day like for you? Do you have a routine; is there something that you absolutely have to have with you to get through your day, etc?
CARIS: Yeah…coffee! And chocolate! As for my routine; I write, I take a break, I watch some HGTV, I write some more, I watch ‘The View’, I kick around a few more ideas, I check my emails, and on and on until usually ten at night. So, it’s never fair to say that I work 16 hours a day…it’s probably more like 8 – 10 solid hours with LOTS of breaks in-between.
Q11): What’s your favorite childhood memory?
CARIS: When I was a child, I lived in a logging town in the coastal mountains of northern California. Logs had formed a jam at a place called Twin Bridges. During the summer, my mom would pack up dinner stuff, you know hot dogs, buns, sweet relish, potato chips, all the super-healthy foods. Dad would pack up some firewood. We’d all swim in the log-jam swimming hole, then dad would light a fire and we would each cook our hot-dogs exactly the way we liked them on straightened-out wire coat-hangers. Life does not get better; the sun, the wind, the rocks, the smell of the river, freezing in the water, frying in the sun. Time Travel…that’s what I should write next…
LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews: O.K, now we’ll ask some questions directly related to “Wings of Fire” and THE WORLD OF ASCENSION series… J
Q12): Was there any specific inspiration that lead to the concept and creation of THE WORLD OF ASCENSION series?
CARIS: Well, first, I knew I wanted a big world, which inspired me to create not just one dimension, but six. The inhabitants of each dimension have increased personal power with the ‘ascending’ numbers. I think Sherrilyn Kenyon did a fabulous job of creating a really big world. So, she was part of the inspiration for me as an author. Of course, I fell in love with her Dark Hunter series and her hunky men made it imperative that I fill my world with equally yummy warriors!
Q13): Is there a specific message in the books that you’re hoping your readers will grasp?
CARIS: I don’t think there’s just one but I have dealt with many themes in my books, like ‘embrace your power’, ‘you’re not alone’, ‘connection brings joy’, things like that. So, no there isn’t one specific message, well, except maybe that LOVE rocks!
Q14): What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, logistical, etc) in bringing “Wings of Fire” or the previous 2 books to life?
CARIS: WINGS OF FIRE was a HUGE challenge for me, as in ENORMOUS! Here’s why: I’d gotten about a fourth of the book written and I had to throw it out. I had the whole novel plotted but it just felt flat. I realized I had to dig deep and really search out a better, more engaging story. Did I succeed? Well, the readers have to answer that question and I have had many wonderful fan emails about WINGS OF FIRE that tell me I hit the mark. So, yes, WOF was a big challenge and a wonderful lesson at the same time since it cemented in my thinking how important it is to listen to my instincts.
Q15): How many books do you have planned for the series?
CARIS: Okay, we’re speaking about my heart’s desire here…but for this first part of the series, as in all the action and all the novels that take place on Second Earth, I have 10 novels planned: one for each of the 9 warriors and the 10th book for my beloved Endelle. HOWEVER, if the gods that rule publishing smile on me, once we wrap up the war on Second Earth, I want more than anything to go to Third Earth. I already know what’s going on with Third, the chaos, the darkness, how different the world is from Second, how the warriors in that dimension are just a little bit bigger and a little bit darker and a little bit sexier than my Warriors of the Blood! I know, right!!! So I’ve got my fingers crossed and every once in a while, I send up a little prayer on behalf of getting the series beyond the second dimension.
Q16): What can we look forward to as the series progresses?
CARIS: Well, BORN OF ASHES comes out January 3rd and this novel stars the sexiest Frenchman in six dimensions, Warrior Jean-Pierre. He’s amazingly tender with his oh-so-worthy woman, which makes his book a little bit different from WOF and from OBSIDIAN FLAME, which follows BORN OF ASHES. I’ve already completed OBSIDIAN FLAME, which is Warrior Thorne’s book, and I know that I have many fans just waiting for his novel because, well, he’s THE MAN. I hope I did him justice. I know I absolutely loved writing every word of his story. And just to give you a hint, his woman is a bit like Endelle…
Q17): What else is in the works for Caris Roane outside of THE WORLD OF ASCENSION?
CARIS: For the past year, in my brief off-hours, I’ve been toying with a Regency Historical Series. I wrote Regency Romance for over a decade before being published in Paranormal and I miss that world more than I can say. Of course, it’s a bit tricky trying to do both when my pub schedule for the Ascension series is so tight, but I’m hopeful. However, just to be clear, I don’t have a completed novel yet, nor do I have a contract…so this is still just a dream in my heart…but I’m working on it.
Q18): Is there a question that you have always wanted to be asked in an interview but have never been asked? How would you answer that question?
CARIS: I can’t believe this, but nothing comes to mind! See how thorough you all are?!?
Q19): What legacy do you hope to leave behind with your work?
CARIS: Legacy? There’s only one that matters to me; that my books gave the readers some pleasure, some joy, and some relief from the day-to-day grind. Beyond that, meh.
Q20): Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers while we have you here today?
CARIS: I’ve said this before, but I’m so happy to be able to say it again, I think of you all when I write. To me, it feels like a partnership and when I get stuck with a scene or a plot idea or when a character is really yelling at me, I can get unstuck really fast by just having this thought: what would the reader like at this point in the story! The result always amazes me!
LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews: Caris, thank you so much for being with us today! THE WORLD OF ASCENSION books are fantastic, and we’re very excited for more. We’d LOVE to have you back to help promote “Born of Ashes” in 2012 if you’re interested…
CARIS: Absolutely! Name the day! And thanks again for having me!
