Q&A Interview and Giveaway with Alyssa Day

Hello everyone!  Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are proud to welcome New York Times and USA Today bestselling and award winning author, Alyssa Day to our sites today!

Alyssa Day is the pen name (and dark and tortured alter ego) of RITA award-winning author Alesia Holliday.  She is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of paranormal romance and urban fantasy novels.  She was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, and spent her childhood moving all around the world with her family and her dad, who was in the U.S. Air Force, living in such varied and wonderful places as Colorado, the Philippines, Alaska, Turkey, Texas, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and probably a few other places she has forgotten.  After graduating from The Ohio State University (go Buckeyes!) with a degree in sociology, she worked in the real world for a while but then went to law school, graduating summa cum laude from Capital Law School in Columbus, Ohio.  She practiced law as a trial lawyer in three different states before deciding that she had more fun with the voices in her head than the ones in courtrooms.  After marrying Navy Guy, she started on another round of adventures, moving from Ohio to Florida to Seattle to Florida to Virginia to Florida to Japan (so far!).

A voracious reader, Alyssa has a collection of research books on mythology and history that nearly makes the moving guys cry when they come to pack up her house each time the Navy decides to send her family on a new adventure.  When not writing or reading or driving white-knuckled on the left side of the road in Japan, she can be found watching reality TV, going to the movies (she adores really, really bad Sci-Fi movies), travelling, and trying new restaurants.

Her WARRIORS OF POSEIDON novels are published by Penguin books, under the Berkley imprint.  Atlantis Rising was the first of the series, and was featured on the cover of the March, 2007, issue of Romantic Times BOOKClub magazine.   All of the Warriors of Poseidon novels have rocked the bestseller lists and have been featured in the Rhapsody and Doubleday book clubs.  The Warriors novels follow High Prince Conlan of Atlantis and his elite warriors as they protect humanity, save the world, and find amazing human women to fall in love with.  (No mermaids, gills, or fish tails; these warriors are 100% pure alpha male!).

Alyssa’s exciting new project is an urban fantasy series coming soon that combines her love of the paranormal with a hot contemporary setting, and she’s so excited to share it with you.  Deets coming soon!

When she’s not playing in her paranormal worlds, Alyssa is the very busy mom to two brilliant children (chaperone the trip to Yokohama Science Museum? Sure!), the wrangler to a varying number of rescue pugs, and the wife of Navy Guy, who may be flying over an ocean near you in his mighty P 3 Orion at this very minute.

The WARRIORS OF POSEIDON currently consists of seven (7) books and two (2) novellas, Book 1 - "Atlantis Rising", #2 - "Atlantis Awakening", #3 - "Atlantis Unleashed", #4-"Atlantis Unmasked", #5-"Atlantis Redeemed", #6-"Atlantis Betrayed", #7-"Vampire in Atlantis" which was just released in June 2011 and the 2 novellas that can be found in the "Wild Thing" and "Shifter" anthology books.  The eighth and most highly anticipated release in the series "Heart of Atlantis" is scheduled to be released May 1, 2012.
Alyssa also has an eBook that is being released on November 15 called "Alejandro's Sorceress".  Let's take a look and see what these amazing books are all about…

"Alejandro's Sorceress" (Coming 11/15/11)- synopsis -
When a very hot alpha male warrior graduates from the FBI's Paranormal Ops training academy, his very first case is to capture and kill the evil sorceress who turns out to be the only woman he ever loved.  Sizzling suspense and dangerous desire ensue!

"Vampire in Atlantis" - W.O.P. Book #7 synopsis -

The most unexpected of all allies to Poseidon’s warriors has proven to be the fiercest—Daniel, a vampire and Night Guild mage. But even the strongest alliance can be destroyed when an 11,000 year-old desire is reborn…

A vampire’s oath, a maiden’s quest…
Daniel, vampire and ally of the Warriors of Poseidon, has fought on the side of humanity—even against his fellow creatures of the night—for more than 11,000 years.  But the crushing weight of futility and the reality of always being starkly, utterly alone has forced him to finally give into despair. He took the first step into the sunlight that would destroy him—and instead walked into Atlantis.
And the blackest of magic that could consume them both…
Eleven thousand years ago, Serai was one of a group who agreed to be placed into magical stasis to ensure the future of the Atlantean race. When a dark sorceress steals the gemstone that protects her sleeping sisters, she awakens to a vastly changed world—and the one man she could never, ever forget. And with an ancient evil tracking their every step, the long-lost lovers must battle both the darkest of magic and the treacheries of their own hearts.

"Atlantis Betrayed" - Book #6 - W.O.P - synopsis
A warrior’s mission, a woman’s desire…
What could Christophe, powerful Warrior of Poseidon, have in common with Fiona Campbell, prim and proper Scottish illustrator of fairytales by day and notorious jewel thief known as the Scarlet Ninja by night? Answer:  The Siren, a legendary Crown Jewel that Fiona has targeted for her next heist. It’s said to be worth millions, but to Christophe it’s invaluable. For the Siren also happens to be one of the missing jewels from Poseidon’s trident.
And the unnatural evil that could destroy them both.
But breaking into the Tower of London is a two-person job, so Christophe and Fiona team up to commit the crime of the century. As newfound passions fire their motives--and cloud their judgment--they realize they aren’t the only ones after the priceless gem. A dark force is shadowing their every move, and threatening to shatter their trust with revenge, betrayal, and a haunting revelation about the past.

Well, now that we’ve got you all online downloading and buying this awesome series, how about we get to the interview and learn more about the remarkable woman behind the WARRIORS OF POSEIDON shall we!?

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hi Alyssa!  Thank you for stopping by to chat with us.  We’re very excited to have you here today!
Alyssa:  I'm thrilled to be here! Thank you for inviting me.  After the typhoon knocked out electricity for 3 days last week, I'm also excited to be able to go online to answer your questions!  Life in Japan has been . . . interesting this year.
Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  We like to start out by finding out a bit more about our guest author, and then we’ll dig into the books…
Q1): Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we couldn’t find out easily on the Internet?
Alyssa:  I have an irrational fear and hatred of mayonnaise.  I can sing the national anthem of the Philippines in Tagalog and the national anthem of France in French.  I have a two-foot-tall Hans Solo on the desk in my office, next to my RITA statuette.

Q2):  What are 3 things that never fail to make you smile?
Alyssa: Babies laughing.  My friends' successes.  Halloween shops (my husband, Navy Guy, keeps threatening to buy me my own Halloween shop so our house doesn't become even more overrun with life-size ghouls, zombies, and grim reapers).

Q3):  Congratulations on your move!  How do you like living in Japan?  Was it really hard for you to adjust to living there?
Alyssa: yes, it has been a challenging adjustment.  The culture and language is very very different and it's much harder to pick up a new language now than it was when I was a kid and learned Tagalog and then Turkish so easily.  I have to say wakarimasen  a lot - "I don't understand!"
Q4):  What are some of your hobbies or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not working, writing or taking care of other business?
Alyssa:Like most writers, I’m a voracious reader.  We enjoy traveling - next month we're planning trips to the Mashiko Autumn Pottery Festival, Inuyama Castle, the Kiso River, and Meiji Mura, and to Tokyo Disney! (That last one is for the kids, who demanded a little amusement park with their culture and history, LOL.)

Q5):  What are some of your favorite TV Shows and Movies?

Alyssa: Anything sci-fi always gets me; I'm checking out Terra Nova right now and have high hopes.  Love The Walking Dead.  Also Justified, The Good Wife, Vampire Diaries, Castle (Nathan Fillion in anything, let's be honest, Firefly was amazing!)

Q6):  Who are some of your favorite authors, and what’s in your TBR pile right now?
Alyssa: I have so many favorite authors I couldn't begin to list them.  But looking at what I've read in the past couple of weeks:  I'm reading David McCullough's THE GREATER JOURNEY, AMERICANS IN PARIS.  McCullough has won the Pulitzer Prize twice, so he could pretty much make his grocery list interesting, but this period in particular fascinates me, between about 1830 and 1900 when so many Americans in the fields of art, literature, medicine, and politics, traveled to Paris to live and learn.  I'm re-reading A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN with my 11 year-old daughter as part of our homeschooling adventure (one of my favorite books of all time), and I just finished THE CHILDREN OF HENRY VIII by Alison Weir.  For fun, I've recently read Ilona Andrews' MAGIC SLAYS, Jayne Castle's CANYONS OF NIGHT, Karen Marie Moning's Fae series, Jacqueline Carey's NAAMAH'S BLESSING, Eileen Carr's VANISHED IN THE NIGHT (which is absolutely terrifyingly good romantic suspense), and Jim Butcher's GHOST STORY.
Q7):  If you could have any one super power, what would you want it to be? Why that one?
Alyssa: I think super speed, since as a mom and working writer, I can never find enough time for everything.  Typing 12,000 words a minute while simultaneously doing the laundry, cooking, and dishes sounds appealing.  LOL.
Q8):  What are the best and worst parts of writing for you?

Alyssa:  The best is when it's going wonderfully; everything is flowing and the characters are practically shouting at me to hurry up and type faster.  The worst is when I'm stuck and nothing is flowing and the characters are giving me the silent treatment.
Q9):  What’s a typical work day like for you?  Do you have a routine; is there something that you absolutely have to have with you to get through your day, etc?
Alyssa:  I just answered this for another interviewer - I always feel guilty that there is no such thing as "typical" in my life!  I don't need routine, or ritual, or even for things to be a certain way.  All I need is a computer, or a pen and paper if need be, and for my mind to turn on.  I once wrote the last chapter of a book in a very noisy Chuck E Cheese's on a Saturday, while the birthday parties screamed around me!!  Unfortunately I don't have "typical" writing days, either.  With my life as a Navy wife, things are crazy all the time, so I fit in writing whenever I can and some days I'm lucky to write 5 pages and some days I write 25!

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  O.K, now we’ll ask some questions directly related to the WARRIORS OF POSEIDON series and other projects…  J
Q10):   Can you please tell us about your new eBook "Alejandro's Sorceress"?

Alyssa: Alejandro is a character from Justice's book, Atlantis Unleashed, who grabbed me from the moment he stepped on the page and wouldn't let go.  I knew I needed to write more about him.  When he's assigned to go after a dark magic sorceress, he's shocked to discover she's none other than the woman he loved--and left behind!
Q11):  If you could spend the day with any one of the WARRIORS OF POSEIDON who would you pick and what would you do?
Alyssa:  It would have to be Ven.  We'd watch wonderful B movies like Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and crack awful jokes.  Ven has the sense of humor that's most like mine.
Q12):  What was the inspiration that lead to the concept and creation of the WARRIORS OF POSEIDON  series?
Alyssa:  I've always loved mythology and history and the idea of finding a lost civilization. When I was a little girl, I told my mom I'd grow up and discover Atlantis one day--and now I have!
Q13):  Is there a specific message in the books that you’re hoping your readers will grasp?
Alyssa: That's an interesting question; I've never been asked that and I'm glad that you did.  The underlying premise of the entire series is that we can't judge others by race, religion, color, or even species!  Not all werewolves are bad, not all Atlanteans are good, not all vampires are evil--we all have individual motives and goals and beliefs.  I think that sums up my personal world view, too.
Q14):  What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, logistical, etc) in bringing the “WARRIORS OF POSEIDON” to life?

Alyssa: My major challenge is never research, or logistics, or action scenes.  My major challenge, believe it or not, is including enough love and emotion.  I usually write my "all action first draft" and then go back and find enough time for breaks in the action so that my characters can actually take a breath and express their feelings.  "It can't be ALL swordfights" as my very patient editor once said to me.  "This is a ROMANCE novel."  J
Q15):  How many books are planned for the rest of the series?
Alyssa:  HEART OF ATLANTIS is the final book in this first arc of the series; Atlantis will definitely rise at the end of the book. Whether any of the Atlanteans live through the cataclysm or not is still up in the air! But after this first arc, I'm definitely still writing Denal, Jack, and a few novellas about some of the other characters, so never fear!
Q16):  What can we look forward to as the series comes to its conclusion (although we are definitely not looking forward to the end of the series)? L
Alyssa:  Atlantis will rise!!  Alaric will abdicate his post as high priest to Poseidon --but Poseidon might not let him get away with it!!  Anubisa IS BACK!!  SWORDFIGHTS!!!  Alaric finally, FINALLY gets to see Quinn naked!!  It's a very exciting book.  J
Q17):  Can you tell us more about your upcoming Urban Fantasy series and anything else you may have in the works?
Alyssa: The League of the Black Swan is a cross between Urban Fantasy and paranormal romance.  The League formed when the Knights Templar joined with the Fae and other supernatural creatures to police the non-humans who work on the black side of magic.  It's set in contemporary New York, in an area called Bordertown, where NYC overlaps the Fae and Demon realms, and it's smoking hot!  I'm having a total blast writing it!
Q18):  Is there a question that you have always wanted to be asked in an interview but have never been asked?  How would you answer that question?

Alyssa: Why are writers so neurotic?  Because this is a profession where you MAKE STUFF UP WITH YOUR BRAIN.  As a trial lawyer, I knew how to do my job.  As a waitress in college, I knew how to do my job.  Every job I've ever had, I knew how to do it.  But, as a writer, my job is to MAKE STUFF UP WITH MY BRAIN.  What if one day, my brain suddenly refuses to make stuff up? What if my imagination breaks or fizzles or burns out?  I think many of us secretly wrestle with this fear.
Or, and this is equally valid, I'm just a total nutcase.

Q19):  What legacy do you hope to leave behind with your work?
Alyssa: Legacy seems like a very big word for what I want to do with my work--what I already do with my work.  I entertain.  I help people smile and escape reality for just a little while.  Every letter I receive that tells me a reader used one of my books to help her get through a tough time, or that she read it during chemo, or that she laughed with Ven's bad jokes when her own marriage was falling apart, or that she cheered for Daniel and Serai when she was really worried about the mortgage or her job--well.  I cry when I read those letters.  What else could a writer dream of accomplishing?
Q20):  Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers while we have you here today?
Alyssa:  I appreciate you more than I will ever, ever be able to express.  I have dreamed of being a writer ever since I read my first book at age 3 and told my Mom that I wanted to write one.  Thank you all for plunking down your 8 bucks (that I know perfectly well would buy two happy meals and a night off of cooking!)to share in my world and help me continue to do this thing that makes me crazy but I love so much.  I can never thank you enough.
Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Alyssa, thank you so much for being with us today!  The WARRIORS OF POSEIDON  are one of our favorite all time series, and we’re very excited for more.  We can't wait to have you back in May to help promote the highly anticipated release of Alaric's book.
Alyssa:  Thank you!!  I'm thrilled to be here!
