Five years after the Second Civil War ends, humans and Otherborn- humanlike creatures with superhuman DNA-still struggle for peace. To ensure the continued rights of both, the FBI forms a Para-Ops team with a unique set of skills.

Leader of an Otherborn clan, half-breed vampire Knox Devereaux would do anything to find a cure the anti-vamp vaccine slowly starving his people into extinction.  When the FBI contacts him about leading a team of hand-selected Others on a mission to reclaim the stolen antidote, Knox accepts.  His new assignment places him in direct contact with Special Agent Felicia Locke, the beautiful human he's craved since their very first meeting.

"Chosen by Fate" - Book 2 in the PARA-OPS series
Released on 10/4/11

Although he keeps company with a vampire and a were, human Shaman Caleb O'Flare can definitely hold his own. But neither his psychic ability nor his healing powers can help his sexy-as-hell teammate, Wraith-a ghost with no memory of her human existence, who cannot experience touch without pain. No wraith has managed to exist past its tenth year, so her time is about to run out. She wants only two things before accepting her fate: to learn her human identity, and experience one night with Caleb...

Now that we've learned more about the books and you are adding them to your TBR pile,   Let's get to the interview so we can learn more about Virna…..

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hi Virna!  We’re happy to have you with us today!  Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to drop by and spend some time with us!

Virna {opening comments}:  Thank you so much for having me!  I love the opportunity to talk to readers.

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  We’d like to start out by getting to know you a little bit better.

Q1):   Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we can't find out on the internet, in your bio, etc?

Virna:  Hmm, digging deep down for information here… I was born in the Philippines.  I didn’t begin to appreciate my naturally curly hair until my 30s.  And… I thought about being a librarian.  Actually, I was admitted into UC Berkley’s Library program but decided to go to law school instead.

2)  How long have you been writing?  When did you write your first book?

Virna:  I started writing fiction towards the end of 2006.  I finished my first novel within a few months but it was my sixth novel that sold three years later.

3)  Who or what has influenced your writing and why?

Virna:  I’ve been an avid romance reader since I was twelve.  I gobbled up books by Linda Howard, Anne Stuart, Christina Dodd, Nicole Jordan, Karen Robards and Sandra Brown.  Most recently, I fell in love with the paranormal romances of JR Ward and Larissa Ione.  When I was looking to change careers, I joined RWA and met so many passionate, smart and supportive people!  Writing became quite addictive!

4)  What do you love to do when you're not writing?  Do you have any special hobbies or interests?

Virna:  I love watching Broadway musicals, traveling, and getting massages.

5)  What is your favorite inspirational quote?

Virna:  Try again, fail again, fail better. --Samuel Beckett

6)  Who are some of your favorite authors and what are a couple titles on your TBR list?

Virna:  I just discovered Jeanine Frost and am rapidly making my way through her backlist.  I love anything Anne Stuart writes, whether it’s contemporary, historical, or her latest paranormals under the name Kristin Douglas.

7)  Can you please give us some more information about the PARA OPS series?  Who are the characters?  What do they do?  Etc.

Virna: The Para-Ops team is the first special ops team formed by the FBI to recruit both humans and Otherborn, humanlike creatures with superhuman DNA.  The Para-Ops team is comprised of Knox Devereaux, the vampire leader, Felicia, a special agent skilled in hostage negotiation, a wraith, a mage, a werebeast, and a human psychic shaman.  The team is formed after humans and Otherborn fought each other in the second civil war.  There is tension on the team not just between humans and Otherborn; each race has to grapple with their own fears and biases even as they try to work towards peace in the nation as a whole.

8)  "Chosen by Sin" is the next book in the series.  Can you tell us when this book is scheduled to be realesed and a little bit about what we can expect in this book? Who this book will be about?

Virna: I’m writing Dex Hunt’s story, Chosen By Sin, right now, and although I’m putting him through the wringer, I can’t wait to see this wounded bad boy get his happy ending.  Dex is a werebeast, half werewolf and half human, a creature that is rejected by his own kind for being “less than.” They are often referred to as “pets” or “whipped dogs” since they are generally weaker than full-blooded werewolves.  Dex used to ride with a biker gang of werebeasts, called the Ferals, but broke from the gang after he killed one of its members.  We know he was abandoned by his family and sent to live at a school for cast-off werebeasts, that he and the other boys were abused at the school, and that he joined the Para-Ops team for one purpose—to get revenge on this grandfather.  Dex is hard-edged and a loner, but as we see in Chosen By Fate, he is giving and loyal to those he cares about, including Lucy.  In Chosen By Sin, Dex is investigating a group of shape-shifters working to bring evil spirits back to earth via people’s dreams.

9)  How many books do you have planned for this series?   What can we expect as the series progresses?

Virna:  I’m planning on at least four books but am also introducing new characters.  I would love to write more if readers are willing to stick with me.

10)  What's next for Virna DePaul?  What other projects are you working on besides the PARA-OPS series?

Virna: I’m finishing up my debut romantic suspense novel, Shades Of Desire, with HQN.  The book comes out June 2012 and is the first in a series about “SIG,” the California Department of Justice’s elite Special Investigations Group.  These law enforcement officers are the “best of the best,” helping other departments solve crimes across the state.  In Shades Of Desire, the heroine, a world-famous photographer, takes a picture she shouldn’t have just before she goes blind; in the story, she must grapple with her new disability and her attraction to the hero, a homicide detective, as well as help him stop a killer who soon puts her in his sights.  The next book in the series, tentatively titled Shades Of Temptation, comes out October of 2012, and focuses on other SIG characters introduced in Book 1.

My next Harlequin Romantic Suspense comes out in May 2012, and is about a woman and her former crush, a homicide detective, who reopens the investigation of her mother’s murder; the detective is the same man who caused the heroine and her mother to fight just before her mother was murdered, obviously leaving the heroine with unresolved guilt about her feelings for the hero.

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Virna, thank you again for taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down and talk with us.  We hope to have you on Book Monster and LITERAL ADDICTION again in the future.

Virna {closing comments}:  Thank you so much for having me!  A great benefit of being a writer is getting to meet readers and all the wonderful professionals who keep us connected.

Hi Virna - Thanks for the excellent interview. I'm dying to read Chosen By Fate. My problem is SO many good books are out right now that I find myself just starring off in space unable to organize my TBR list. Do you run into this problem or are you on top of your list?
