Elisabeth is the proud creator of the STOLEN TRILOGY and the ETERNAL GUARDIANS series. The latest book in the ETERNAL GUARDIANS series, “Tempted”, was just dropped on September 6, 2011 and we’re here today to help Elisabeth promote and celebrate!
For those of you not yet familiar with the ETERNAL GUARDIANS, we’d like to give you the synopsis of the 1st three books, including the new release, “Tempted”.
DON'T FORGET!: Elisabeth will be available to chat LIVE with members, followers, fans and guests in the LITERAL ADDICTION Author Chatroom from 4:00 - 6:00pm EST!
Well, now that we’ve got you all online downloading and buying the series, how about we get to the interview and learn more about the remarkable woman behind the ETERNAL GUARDIANS shall we!?
Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION: Hi Elisabeth! We’re very happy to have you here today, and are excited to help you promote “Tempted”!
ELISABETH: Thanks so much for inviting me! I’m thrilled to be here.
Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION: We like to start out by finding out a bit more about our guest author, and then we’ll dig into the books…
Q1): Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we couldn’t find out easily on the Internet?
ELISABETH: Hm…okay, let’s see.
1. I have two Dalmatian pups – brothers - who are seven months old. Their names are Calvin & Hobbes. Hobbes is a real sweetie; Calvin can be a total stinker.
2. Even though I’ve completed several half marathons (recently, not when I was young, LOL), I hate to run. If my running partners weren’t pushing me, I’d turn into a total couch potato.
3. I was a child bride (no joke). Got married at the age of 18 (thankfully I was smart enough not to have kids for a looooong time) and 20 years later (did I just give away my age?) am still (okay, more than before) happily married. My hubby (who is several years older than I am) is my biggest fan.
Q3): What’s your favorite inspirational quote?
ELISABETH: “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.” –Henry Ford
Q4): What are some of your hobbies or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not working, writing or taking care of other business?
ELISABETH: Watching Oregon State Football, going to Yoga, traveling, hanging out with family and friends.
Q6): Who are some of your favorite authors, and what’s in your TBR pile right now?
ELISABETH: Mm…great question!
I love Judith McNaught and Elizabeth Lowell. Wish they’d put out more RS. I recently discovered Catherine Mann, whom I’m enjoying, and auto buys for me include Juliana Stone, Larissa Ione and Galen Foley.
Q7): If you could spend the day with one of your characters, who would you want it to be, and what would you want to do?
ELISABETH: I can’t pick just one! I think I’d like to spend the day with all seven Eternal Guardians. I’d love to “see” them in action.
Q9): What’s a typical work day like for you? Do you have a routine; is there something that you absolutely have to have with you to get through your day, etc?
ELISABETH: I’m hoping to GET into a routine! My youngest just started school full time on Wednesday (first grade) so my routine is changing as we speak. Hopefully, my plan at this point is to get up, check email and twitter, then dive into my book. I’m easily distracted when I’m writing so I have to turn off the internet while I work.
Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION: O.K, now we’ll ask some questions directly related to “Tempted” and the ETERNAL GUARDIANS series… J
Q12): Was there any specific inspiration that lead to the concept and creation of the ETERNAL GUARDIANS series?
ELISABETH: I never planned to write paranormals. When I was working on my Stolen Series, however, I did a lot of research on Greek mythology. The relic my characters were looking for in STOLEN FURY was a statue of the Three Furies from Greek Mythology. While researching that book I became entrenched in the Greek myths and I knew I wanted to write something related to those myths. Then one night the idea for MARKED hit me. It was totally different from anything I’d written before, but it grabbed on and wouldn’t let go. I wrote it, sent it to my agent, and she loved it. And the rest is history.
Q13): Is there a specific message in the books that you’re hoping your readers will grasp?
ELISABETH: I’m a “glass is half full” kind of girl, so my hope is that when readers pick up my books, they find optimism within the pages. I write about very dark situations, but always at the end of the tunnel, there’s light. There’s the opportunity to take a path toward happiness instead of sadness and there’s the promise that good will triumph over evil. The world is depressing enough all by itself…my job as a writer (at least in my head) is to show readers that no matter what you’re facing, it can always get better.
Q14): What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, logistical, etc) in bringing “Tempted” to life?
ELISABETH: I write linearly, from start to finish, and I don’t always know the exact plot points of a story when I start. So in every book I struggle to tie loose ends up by the end of the story. In TEMPTED I knew the basic plot of the book when I started. I knew how Demetrius and Isadora’s relationship would develop. I even knew how the suspense plot and romance would be resolved. But the one element I couldn’t figure out was linked to previous books. You see, in MARKED, book one, Isadora trades her soul to Hades in order to save her sister’s life. That deal has been hanging over Isadora’s head all through ENTWINED (book 2) and continued through TEMPTED. After racking my brain over how I was going to resolve this problem in TEMPTED, I finally realized…I couldn’t. Within the plot of this book, that story question could not be answered. It killed me to know I was leaving that hanging, and the entire time I was writing the book I was sure my editor was going to insist I fix it somehow. But then I got to the end of the book and I discovered WHY it couldn’t be resolved in this book. I don’t want to give too much away, but I will tell you this: A big secret is revealed at the end of TEMPTED that explains how several characters are connected. And when I wrote that scene, the solution to Isadora’s soul issue became crystal clear. She can’t get her soul back in TEMPTED. It may be several books before she eventually does—IF she does at all. But at least now I know how I’m going to resolve that situation. (And oh…the entire thing will make for a really good future book.)
Q15): How many books do you have planned for the series?
ELISABETH: Ideally, I’d like to do one book for each guardian. But there are outlying characters whom I’d also like to write books for – Orpheus, Nick…even Max. So the answer to this question is…as long as readers are buying and enjoying the books, I’ll try to keep writing them.
Q16): What can we look forward to as the series progresses?
ELISABETH: New characters, more mythology, increased worlds colliding as new elements are revealed. I love uncovering different mythological characters and investigating myths I didn’t know existed. Every time I read a new one, I can’t help but wonder, “How could I work that into my Eternal Guardians world?”
Q17): What else is in the works for Elisabeth Naughton outside of the ETERNAL GUARDIANS?
ELISABETH: Right now I’m working on two new romantic suspense proposals. One is straight RS, one is RS with minor pnr elements. I’m not sure yet which direction I’ll go—I’m going to let my agent weigh in with her opinion—but either way I’ll definitely be continuing to write romantic suspense.
Q18): Is there a question that you have always wanted to be asked in an interview but have never been asked? How would you answer that question?
Who do you turn to when you get stuck?
I have several author friends I couldn’t write without. My critique partner, Joan Swan, is the first. We brainstorm together, we send chapters back and forth, we talk nearly every day via IM. Joan’s debut book, FEVER, releases from Kensington in March 2012 and it is, in a word, AWESOME. If you like pnr RS, you’re going to LOVE this book. In addition to being a fantabulous author, Joan is my rock. I’ve told her several times she’s never EVER allowed to drop me as her CP. (If she does, she knows I’ll hunt her down.)
The second is my mentor, Alice Sharpe, who writes for Harlequin Intrigue. Even though Alice has written some 50 published books, she still asks ME for advice. I love Alice because she’s a wealth of publishing information, she’s a master at the synopsis, she’s still as neurotic after 50 books as I am after seven, and because I know when I have a question or concern about my chosen career, she’s always there to answer (or drink away the worry with) me.
And finally…I have several authors I’m so thankful to be friends with. Authors who celebrate my accomplishments, listen to me whine when things get rough and are always there to pull me up when I need it. These include Kristina McMorris (Kensington), Delilah Marvelle (HQN), and Juliana Stone (Avon).
Q19): What legacy do you hope to leave behind with your work?
ELISABETH: At the end of the day, I want readers to remember an Elisabeth Naughton book as being a deep and emotional love story set amidst a highly suspenseful backdrop. One they know they can lose themselves in and find hope.
Q20): Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers while we have you here today?
ELISABETH: Thanks to everyone who has bought my books and given the Eternal Guardians life! And to those who have contacted me to let me know how much they enjoy my work…you make my day!
