Q&A Interview and Giveaway with Alexandra Ivy

Hello Book Monsters and Literal Addicts! Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are very pleased to welcome Deborah Raleigh (a.k.a Alexandra Ivy) to our sites today.

Alexandra Ivy is the pseudonym of Deborah Raleigh, who is the author of thirty three books and novellas for Kensington Publishing. Writing under the name Alexandra Ivy, Deborah published "When Darkness Comes", the first book of the GUARDIANS OF ETERNITY series in January 2007. She has been an avid reader since she could hold a book in her hands, and has always dreamed of putting her own dreams down on paper.

Let's take a look at Deborah's bio (that was written by her), so we can learn some more about this fantastic author:

"I’m not exactly sure when I fell in love with books.  Probably on my mother’s knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me.  I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library.  Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries?  Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few.  I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays.  In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on."

"Years later (no, I’m not admitting how many) I’m still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy.   For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!"

"I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander.  Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams.  They are truly my heroes."

The GUARDIANS OF ETERNITY series currently has seven (7) books -- #1 "When Darkness Comes", #2 "Embrace the Darkness", #3 "Darkness Everlasting", #4 "Darkness Revealed", #5 "Darkness Unleashed", #6 "Beyond the Darkness" and #7 "Devoured by Darkness".  There are also two short stories that can be found in the Anthologies "Yours for Eternity" and "Supernatural".  The eighth book in the series, "Bound by Darkness", will be released on November 29, 2011.

If you have not read the GUARDIANS OF ETERNITY yet, we highly recommend that you do.  The characters are lovable and funny, and the plotlines are intriguing and suspenseful.  You will be hooked after the first book!  Just to prove our point, we'll give you the synopses of the last few available books of the series and the upcoming release….

"Bound by Darkness" Book #8 - Release date: November 29, 2011

The Sylvermysts have a reputation as sinister cousins to the fey, and none are more mysterious than Ariyal and his tribe. To save his people from banishment, he faces a new challenge: Jaelyn, an elite vampire warrior sent to capture him. By rights, he should kill her on sight. Yet he cannot bring himself to hurt her—or to resist her…
Jaelyn is stunningly beautiful, utterly lethal—and always alone. Until Ariyal. From their first encounter, she knows that what's between them is more dangerous than simple lust. And as they unite to thwart a terrifying prophecy that will mean the end of his clan and of the world they know, she will risk everything to fulfill her destiny by his side…

                                                        "Devoured by Darkness" Book #7-

Tane is a Charon, sworn to hunt and kill rogue vampires. His new assignment seems like a waste of his talents—until he catches up with the jinn he's been sent to capture. Half human, half demon, Laylah has a vulnerable streak that strikes right through to Tane's cold heart. He should be furious when she uses her powers to bind them together, preventing him from dragging her before the Commission. Instead he welcomes any reason to stay close enough to touch, to taste, to seduce...
Laylah doesn't know why she was chosen to protect a child who may be the catalyst in a war between good and evil. But the mysteries of her past pale compared to the dangers approaching. Tane is devastatingly strong, breathtakingly sensual. And Laylah will have to trust in every ounce of that strength, because her enemies are drawing near, eager to destroy them both...

"Beyond the Darkness" Book #6 -

He Would Do Anything To Claim Her
Salvatore Giuliani is not a happy werewolf. It's his duty as leader to track down the pureblood females who can keep his people from extinction. But the moment he catches scent of Harley, a pureblood held by a pack of mangy curs, his savage need for her obliterates all other instincts. And the only thing worse than being captured is finding that beautiful, independent Harley defiantly refuses to become his mate.
And Everything To Keep Her
Harley has been taught to distrust all Weres, especially their arrogant king. She won't be used for breeding or bonded against her will, not even to a man who makes every nerve tingle with awareness. Yet Salvatore is her key to saving the family she never knew she had-if she dares to succumb to his dark, predatory desire, and face a vicious enemy sworn to destroy them both...

They sound incredible don't they!?  Let's get started on the interview so we can learn more about the Guardians and the incredible author behind the series….

DON'T FORGET:  Deborah (a.k.a Alexandra/Alex) will be available to chat Live with members, followers, fans and guests in our Author Chatroom from 4:00 - 6:00pm EST (3-5pm Central/2-4pm Mountain/1-3pm Pacific).

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hi!  J  Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us today.  We’re so happy to have you!  Would you prefer that we call you Deborah or Alexandra?

Deborah/Alexandra: [Deborah is fine.]

Q1):   Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we can't find out on the internet, in your bio, etc?

Deborah:
I worked as a model to help put myself through college

2)  When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Deborah:
I’ve always been a writer and of course and avid reader, but most of my life I wanted to be an actress.  I even majored in theatre in college, but I took a playwriting class and I realized that I truly loved creating my own world and characters.  Then, after the birth of my first son, I decided to try my hand at my first love…romance stories!  It took ten years, but I finally, finally sold.

3)  Do you have any interesting writing quirks or things that you must have with you to begin the writing process?

Deborah:
I always write out a synopsis and try to plot most of the book.  I used to just plunge in, but with a series you have to be much more organized J  More truly strange quirk is probably in the actual writing process…I write the book in play format first (all dialogue) and then go back and fill in the action.   That way I can be sure the characters drive the story.  No doubt it comes from my days in theatre.

4)  What is a typical writing day like for you?

Deborah:
I’m fairly OCD.  Once I start a book I live it, breathe it, and even dream it.  When I first get out of bed I spend an hour exercising and then I’ll go through my email and try to take care of any promo I need to do.  Then I’ll make my house at least livable (not easy with two boys in the house) and then sit down to write.   More often than not I’ll write until I go to bed with a brief stop to make dinner and at least say ‘hi’ to my husband J.  I can’t start and stop a manuscript, I lose my passion for it!

5)  What are some of your hobbies, or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?

Deborah:
I love to travel when I have the opportunity!  I’ve been through most of Europe and to a few tropical islands!  And of course, I love, love, love to read.  That’s probably the one downside to writing.  I find it difficult to have the time to just sit down and enjoy a book.

6)  What are some of your favorite TV shows and movies?

Deborah:
Buffy will always be my favorite followed closely by Firefly.  I also love  Dexter.  It’s amazing that a writer could make you actually like a serial killer…that takes talent!  I’m also a huge Ghost Hunter fan.
As far as movies, I go back to my historical roots.  I’ve watched Pride and Prejudice more times than I could possibly count as well as Emma.  Of course, I do love The Lord of Rings Trilogy, all the Die Hards and I prefer the Star Trek movies over the Star Wars…

7)  Do you have a personal favorite book among those you have written so far?  Maybe one that holds special meaning for you, etc?

Deborah:
When Darkness Comes will always have a special place in my heart.   I was busy writing historical, and all of the paranormals at the time were all dark and broody.  So wrote the book just for me, a sort of tribute to Buffy’s ability to combine dark with humor.  At the time I really didn’t think about trying to get it published.

8)  If you could spend the day with any of your characters, who would it be, and what would you want to do?

Deborah:
Absolutely it would be Levet.  He’s my alter-ego.  I’m the kind of person who dislikes controversy and will go out of my way not to hurt someone’s feelings, well…unless they truly make me mad J  But Levet always has the perfect come-back.  He says all the things I wish I had the nerve to say!

9)  You love to write about supernatural beings...  If you could be any of them, which one would you choose to be and why?

Deborah:
I change my mind on this question from day to day…I don’t think I could be a vampire, simply because I LOVE the sun.  But I’m not completely sold on whether I would want to be a werewolf.  I think right now, my preference would be a fairy.  They aren’t the most powerful of supernatural beings, but they have a talent for magic and a unique charm.  Besides, it would be fun if I could have wings to fly!

10)  One of our favorite characters is Levet, the charming, lovable, and hysterically funny gargoyle.  Did anyone or anything in particular inspire his character?

Deborah:
He’s actually a combination of Cary Grant and Pepe Le Pew J

11) "Bound by Darkness" will be the eighth book in the series. How many more books do you have planned?

Deborah:
So far I’ve sold 14 books for the series along with 6 anthologies!

12)  Can you tell us whose book will be up next, and what we might expect from the release?

Deborah:
Next up will be The Real Werewives of Vampire County with Sophia and Luc followed by Bound by Darkness which is Ariyal and Jaelyn’s story.  I just finished up Fear the Darkness which will be released late next year…It’s Caine and Cassie’s story.  After that I hope to work on Santiago’s story!

13)   "The Real Werewives of Vampire County" anthology that is set to be released on October 25, 2011, will have another short story from the GUARDIANS OF ETERNITY series.  Can you tell us who the story will feature and give us a tiny sneak peek?

Deborah:
This is Sophia’s story (the mother of Darcy, Regan, Harley, and Cassie).  She was a real bitch (pun intended) and she seemed perfect for a Housewife story!  She meets her match in Luc, a hot blooded Were from Miami who comes to act as her bodyguard.

14)  You have a new release coming out in March of 2012 as well called "My Vampire Lord".  Can you tell us a bit about it?

Deborah:
This book is actually a reprint of one of my early regency stories I wrote as Debbie Raleigh.  It’s set in Regency England, but one of the characters, Nefri, is also featured in my current series J  It’s a story about three vampires who return to England to help stop a psychotic vampire from destroying the world.

15)  Will "My Vampire Lord" be a standalone title or part of a new series?

Deborah:
There were three stories in the original series, My Lord Vampire, My Lord Eternity, and My Lord Immortality.  They’ll be released over the next three years.

16)  What has been the most rewarding experience of your career so far?

Deborah:
The opportunity to meet other writers and readers!  I live in a very isolated part of northeast Missouri and it’s not often that I can find someone who shares my love for books, and even more rare to find someone who wants to discuss writing!!  It’s been such a blessing to connect with others that can understand my passion.

17)  What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview, but have never been asked?  How would you answer it?

Deborah:
Who are the people who support me?
My parents raised me to follow my dreams, while keeping my feet firmly planted in reality.  And my husband has always encouraged me.  Long before I was published he treated my writing as a career and never complained when it took me away from him or when he was eating yet another frozen pizza!  Not everyone is fortunate enough to have that kind of support and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

18)  If you could describe your life up to this moment in 5 words what would they be?

Deborah:
Blessed.   Loved.  Chaotic.  Adventurous.  Insane.

19)  What legacy do you hope to leave your readers with?

Deborah:
I was one of those writers who followed my dreams for years and years and years with nothing to show for my efforts by a growing stack of rejections.  Any sane person would have thrown in the towel J  But I kept trying and kept working on my craft and I refused to accept defeat!  If you truly believe in yourself and in your dream you can accomplish anything!  Always believe…

20)  Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers while we have you here today?

Oh yes!  I want to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!  My series started out as a personal love for the lighter side of paranormal.  I never dreamed that it would go beyond the first book or that the readers would be so enthusiastic.  It’s been such a fun adventure and none of it would be possibly without those readers who not only went out and bought the books, but told their friends about the Guardians!  Bless you all…

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Thank you again for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us.  We would love to have you back again in 2012 for the release of "My Lord Vampire" if you’re interested.

I haven't started the series yet, but I have quite a few of the books on my TBR shelf so I'd like to get started reading it soon. Reading the post and interview reminds me why I picked up those books in the first place. They sound fantastic, with great characters and interesting story lines. The Werewives of Vampire County sounds like a great anthology, and I'm looking forward to reading it.

I was very stupid and let a friend talk me into allowing her to borrow Beyond the Darkness I kept the cover so it wouldn't get damaged of course she promised to return it as soon as she finished it a fast reader that she is. Well ,I never got it back and she has moved and I haven't heard from her so I don't lend books any more lesson learned. Thanks for the interview. I've read a few from the library very good reads.

Read and loved them all but I would abso love to spend the day with Levet. He is such a coward but so brave at the same time. I love the bits of French I learn from him and I really loved that he ****spoiler**** got to be so big even if it was only for a little while. It seemed like a nice reward for all the crap he puts up with! :)
