When Charley is rudely awakened in the middle of the night by her best friend who tells her to get dressed quickly and tosses clothes out of the closet at her, she can’t help but wonder what Cookie’s up to. Leather scrunch boots with a floral miniskirt? Together? Seriously? Cookie explains that a friend of hers named Mimi disappeared five days earlier and that she just got a text from her setting up a meet at a coffee shop downtown. They show up at the coffee shop, but no Mimi. But Charley finds a message on the bathroom wall. Mimi left a clue, a woman’s name. Mimi’s husband explains that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old friend of hers from high school had been found murdered a couple weeks prior. The same woman Mimi had named in her message.

Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally) has left his corporeal body and is haunting Charley. He’s left his body because he’s being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can’t let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they’ll have a portal to heaven. And if they have a portal to heaven…well, let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty. Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Will Cookie ever get a true fashion sense? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel them as they do?

My Review.....

The second installment of the Charley Davidson series is another fun and entertaining read. 

The book starts off with Cookie waking Charley out of a deep sleep.  Cookie's friend Mimi has gone missing and Cookie received a message from Mimi saying to meet her at a diner.  Of course when they get there, Mimi is nowhere to be found but they do find a message left for them.  This storyline runs throughout the book with lots of twists and surprises.

The second main storyline is of course, the delectable and scrumptious Reyes Farrow.  Reyes, aka the Son of Satan, literally, is being tortured by demons.  He leaves his corporeal body and comes to Charley in his ghostly form. He tells Charley that he is going to let his corporeal body die because the demons are torturing him to try and lure Charley to come to him, but Reyes cannot allow that to happen.  If the demons get Charley then they will have a direct portal to Heaven.  Of course, Charley does not agree with Reyes' plan so the hunt for his corporeal body begins.  We also get to learn a little more about Reyes' background and the background of how Reyes became Charley's protector of sorts.  Charley also learns that she has a lot more powers that she does not know about yet.

All of the usual characters have returned to help Charley on her quests.  We get more of Taft and his ghostly little sister, "Strawberry Shortcake".  Angel, Charley's ghostly assistant is there to assist.  We get to visit Rocket Man again and meet his little sister, "Blue".  Garrett Swopes seems to believe in Charley's gifts more this time around and tries to help her out.  Poor Mr. Wong is still stuck in the corner of Charley's living room.  Will he ever talk or come out?  I'm dying to know what's up with Mr. Wong!!

There is also a very emotional moment to this story with Charley and her dad.  Her dad had been acting funny and after an attack on Charley and her dad she learns why.  I have to say I cried my eyes out reading this part of the book.  You really feel for Charley in that moment.  The only good part of this situation is it brings Charley and her sister much closer.

I love Darynda Jones.  I find her stories light, entertaining and hysterically funny.  I totally enjoy sitting down and reading her books and I am definitely looking forward to Third Grave Dead Ahead.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars
