Q&A Interview and Giveaway with Devyn Quinn

Good morning Book Monsters and Literal Addicts!  Book Monster Reviews and LITERAL ADDICTION are proud to have bestselling, award winning author Devyn Quinn with us today!
Devyn Quinn lives in the scenic Southwest with her cats, ferrets, and a Shih Tzu named Tess, though she has called several other states home. She is a huge fan of tattoos, dark gothic music & shoot-’em-up action movies, though reading is her first love.  Devyn spends too much time with history books, as well as feeding her addiction for celebrity biographies, but she especially enjoys reading books on Hollywood before the 1960′s and is crazy about Marilyn Monroe (her legend and her myth).
Devyn is the esteemed creator of the DARK TIDES, KYTH & KINN and new VAMPIRE ARMAGEDDON series.

Her latest release, “Darkness Descending”, VAMPIRE ARMAGEDDON Book #1, was just released on 8/2/11 and has received incredible reviews.  It’s been referred to as:  “Fantastic”, “Ingenious”, and “A paranormal junkie’s dream” among other things.

“Darkness Descending” Synopsis:
Fallen angels in the form of vampires are infecting humans one by one, creating an army fit for Armageddon. Jesse Burke, driven by vengeance to destroy the vampiric angels, has been protecting New Orleans from the onslaught, unaware that she has a much greater destiny awaiting her in the face of the oncoming apocalypse...

Do you we have your attention yet?  Good!  How about we tell you a little bit about an upcoming release in one of Devyn’s other series too!?

Siren’s Desire”, DARK TIDES Book #3, is due out in February of 2012 and looks to be just as captivating and intoxicating as everything else Devyn has released to date.

Siren’s Desire” Synopsis:
While fighting for their lives, three mermaid sisters must battle dark and forbidden desires hidden in the ocean’s depths…
After defeating the covert agency that threatened to destroy her and her sisters, Addison Lonike grudgingly resumes her life as an EMT in Maine. She would love nothing more than to take on the dangerous Mer queen, Magaera, who is hell-bent on destroying them. But with two baby nieces on the way, she can’t take the risk. That is, until Mason McKenzie arrives…
Captain of the naval task force on the hunt for Queen Magaera in the Mediterranean, Mason sees the perfect recruit in Addison. But while at sea, the pair is pulled under a wave of passion that threatens their independent natures—and their mission. An encounter with a new race of male sea-shifters further complicates Addison’s desires. Now, she must choose between a life of the sea, or fulfilling the deepest longings of her heart…

O.K, so now that we’ve proven that pretty much anything by Devyn is amazing, let’s find out a little bit more about her and her books direct from the source.

Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION:  Hi Devyn!  We’re very happy to have you with us today!  Thank you so much for taking out to let our followers and members get to know you and your books a little bit better, and for letting your fans talk to you a bit as well.

Devyn: Thanks for the invite. I’m thrilled to be here.
LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  We like to start out by getting to know our guest author a bit more, and then we’ll dig into the books.
Q1): Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we can't find out on the internet?
Devyn: Hmm. First is I don’t own a television. I am bad about flipping one on and watching hours of mindless shows, all the while getting nothing done. So I got rid of mine about a decade ago. I get much more writing done when the place is silent. Second is my house is only furnished with a bed, a desk and a chair and table. I have nothing else in the way of large possessions. Everything else I own is small and portable. After my divorce years ago, I scaled down my life to only things I needed. Third is a portion of the royalties earned from my books goes into local animal rescue, mainly cats and ferrets.

Q2):  How do you think your upbringing has influenced your writing (if at all)?
Devyn: Hmm. Out here in the middle of god-forsaken farming community, the only thing a girl was expected to do was marry a farmer and have some kids. The fact that I wanted to grow up and write books just didn’t sit well with my parents. They could not fathom the idea of someone who did their work sitting in front of a computer. They still can’t, LOL, and would much rather I found another career. Law or medicine would have suited them just fine. Writing, not so much.
Q3):   If you could live your childhood over again, 1)  Would you?  And 2)  What would you want to change and/or make sure to do?
Devyn: I have no particular interest in revisiting my childhood. For one, I stepped in a rattlesnake nest when I was 6 years old, and almost lost my leg! So I’d rather not go back, unless maybe I could change that day I got bit by those snakes and undo all the nerve damage from the surgery! I would also start writing earlier, and pay more attention in my English classes!
Q4):  How and when did you start writing?
Devyn: I started writing as a teenager, but it wasn’t really encouraged. I tried my hand at writing when I was married (both times) but again, it didn’t really work out because the men in my life weren’t supportive of the idea. After my second divorce, I decided to do what I wanted to and damn the consequences. Even if I had to go without or own less, I decided writing was what I’d do. It was a lifetime dream and I began to feel that if I didn’t do it in my 30’s, I never would. I’m more than middle aged now and have no regrets that I gave it a shot.
Q5):  What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing or taking care of other author business?
Devyn: I do what everyone else does. Clean house, take care of animals, run errands for my parents—they’re getting on in years and don’t get around as well as they used to. My biggest fun is my iPad. I have Netflix and enjoy watching a movie or maybe renting one off iTunes. I’m pretty simple and set in my ways now, LOL.
Q6):  Who are some of your favorite authors and books?
Devyn: I love Stephen King, John Grisham and Frank McCourt. King was definitely an early inspiration for my own writing and I loved most of his books until he began to go a little bit too strange for me. I love Grisham’s legal thrillers and his spare prose is a reminder that a sentence doesn’t have to be complicated to communicate the story to the reader (did that one just go one a bit long, LOL). McCourt is just lyrical and you can tell the man has a love for words in his narrative.
Q7):  Do you have a specific routine you follow when you write, or things you must have with you to get the creative juices flowing?
Devyn: When I am working on a book, I have a certain word count to meet each day, usually 1500. That’s 7 solid pages. After I meet that, I can get up and leave the computer. Or, if I am in the mood and the process is flowing, I will keep going. I often do way more than the daily minimum. But if the process isn’t working for one reason or another, it’s a relief to be able to get up and leave the computer when the minimum is met. Once I finish a book, I am done. There is no rewriting or rethinking until after I receive the edit from my editor. If I tried to go back and polish, I would get stuck for weeks on a single chapter. That often sucks the life out of writing. I prefer to be spontaneous and let the gut write. My editor’s job is to tighten it up, take out what doesn’t work and point out what does. Then if it’s required, I’ll do the rewriting. Some books get gutted, others are barely touched, but that’s part of the process. I couldn’t work any other way.
Q8):  If you could describe yourself in 5 words, what would they be?
Devyn: Has lots of body art.
Q9): What’s your guilty pleasure?
Devyn: My iPad!!! They are outrageously expensive but I wanted one. I ate cereal for weeks to afford one, LOL.
Q10):  What’s the one legacy that you hope to leave your readers with?
Devyn: That they were entertained and felt my books were worth the price they paid.
LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  O.K, now let’s find out some more about your incredible books…
Q11):  Can you tell us a little bit about “Darkness Descending” in your own words?
Devyn: Darkness Descending was an idea that blossomed after I wanted some science show on parasitic infection. I just got to thinking that I didn’t buy the way vampires were “made” in the movies (you get bitten, you die, what’s up with that?) so I decided to create a parasitic demon that inhabited its host.
Q12):  Was there any particular inspiration behind the book?
Devyn: Yeah, I wanted to make lots of $$$! (kidding) Really, it was just an idea that stuck in my mind. Then the characters began to form and before I knew it I was sending it out to my agent to see what she thought of the idea. Fortunately she believed it was worth developing. Once my editor jumped on board, we hashed out the concept and had a series.

Q13):  How many books do we have to look forward to in VAMPIRE ARMAGEDDON?  Can you tell us a little bit about what we might have to look forward to as the series progresses?
Devyn: Right now I have three under contract, but it could go to more books if the sales are good and the readers are there. Right now, it’s an evolving storyline that will see Jesse Burke embracing and learning to use her inner demon to fight others, who are now, essentially, her own kind.
Q14):  The cover of “Darkness Descending” is gorgeous!  Who did your art?
Devyn: It was done by the NAL art department. I don’t have a specific name of the artist, but I will mention that she took what I had in mind and got it down almost exactly to what I asked form. I am hoping that will continue with the cover of Darkness Awakening.
Q15):   What are your favorite type of scenes to write (love, suspense, dialogue, etc)?
Devyn: Love scenes are the hardest, and are very slow for me. The rest I can zip through pretty fast. Action slows me down sometimes, trying to get what I see in my head on paper in a manner the reader will understand.
Q16):  “Siren’s Desire” sounds great!  How many books do you have planned for the DARK TIDES series?  Can you tell us a little bit about what we might expect as this series continues?
Devyn: Dark Tides was proposed as a trilogy and that book will tie it up. Although my editor has mentioned more mermaids, I can’t imagine doing any more at this time. Later on, I may revisit the world, but with a new cast of characters.
Q17):  Do you have any plans to continue the KITH & KYNN series?
Devyn: Kensington declined to publish a third Kynn book, and I have no plans to continue it at this time. Later, I might revisit the Kynn world and self-publish.
Q18): What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview but have never been asked, and how would you answer that question?
Devyn: Why did you get that Reaper tattoo? The answer is, I like the Grim Reaper and all things Goth and have several!
Q19):  What’s up next for Devyn Quinn?  What do you have planned outside of “Siren’s Desire” in the near future?
Devyn: I am writing on Darkness Awakening, as well as working with my agent to develop a new UF series. We’re pleased with the direction it is taking and are hoping to have some good news to announce very soon.
Q20):  Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers while we have you here today?
Devyn: Thanks for being there, and I hope you continue to check out my work.
LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Thank you so much Devyn!  It’s been incredible having you with us today, and we’re very excited for the chat later this evening!  We hope that we’ve tuned some new readers into your amazing work, and we can’t wait to see what you dish up for us next.  We would love to have you back for the release of “Siren’s Desire”, in February if you’d be interested!!  J
Thanks, hon!

It's funny to hear that most authors say that writing love scenes are the hardest. I would think they would be the easiest. I've read a lot of good things about this book and would love to have myself a copy. Please count me in. Thanks
