Q&A Interview and Giveaway with Bianca D'Arc

LITERAL ADDICTION and Book Monster Reviews are very happy to welcome Bianca D’Arc to our sites today!

Bianca is way more than just an author!  She is a former chemist with more letters behind her name than we could ever hope to have, a martial arts enthusiast, and an artist.  We’re not talking about being an artist just with her pen and computer, though that can’t be disputed!  We actually meant with a paint brush and a guitar, since those are 2 of her hobbies when she’s not creating fantastical worlds for us to get lost in.  Outside of that, she’s an avid bargain hunter and LOVES to shop!

Bianca’s background in science has come in handy in her writing, as she enjoys mixing her real-world knowledge of science with her vast imaginary world library.  She writes in many genres and mixed genres, but concentrates most of her work in the paranormal, sci-fi, fantasy and futuristic realms with some contemporary and urban fantasy thrown in for the heck of it.  As fans, we can honestly say that we wouldn’t want it any other way!

Her new book, “Dead Alert”, book #5 of the GUARDIANS OF THE DARK series, was just released on 7/26/11 and we are here to help Bianca promote and celebrate!

To date, there hasn’t been a member of the LITERAL ADDICTION or Book Monster family whom we’ve checked with that hasn’t read and loved just about everything Bianca has put out.  And among those fans, the consensus has been that Bianca’s  books make for happy relationships! *Wink*
Now, let’s see what Bianca had to say when we peppered her with questions for the interview…

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  Hi Bianca!  Thank you so very much for being with us today!  We’re very excited to get to know a little bit more about you and dig into some of your series a bit more.  Hopefully if we have guests today who haven’t read anything of yours yet, we can get them to bump up your series in their TBR lists.

Bianca:  Hi! Thanks so much for inviting me!

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews:  We usually start out by getting to know our guest author a bit better and then move on to the more bookish questions…
Q1):  Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we couldn’t find out on the internet?

Bianca: Ooh – starting right in with the tough questions, eh? Okay, I’m game!
1) Once upon a time, I was a Robin Hood fanatic. I especially loved the BBC series, Robin of Sherwood. If you’ve never seen it, you should really check it out. (And that hunky Michael Praed isn’t tough on the eyes either! LOL!)
2) My very first car was a Plymouth Satellite. It was really old at the time and had holes in the floorboards where you could see the road passing beneath you, kind of like Fred Flinstone’s car. The song Planet Claire by the B-52’s was sort of my theme song for a few years in high school because of the line “She drove a Plymouth Satellite, faster than the speed of light…” J
3) I love, love, LOVE BBC mysteries and watch them all the time. Currently, I’m enjoying all the Midsomer Murders episodes streaming over the internet. Maybe someday I’ll try my hand at writing a mystery.;-)

Q2):  What are 3 things that can always make you smile?

1)  Wild bunnies eating fallen apples in my front lawn.
2)  Orange butterflies – they remind me of my Mom.
3)  The classic episode of Taxi where Reverend Jim is taking his driving test. (“What does a yellow light mean?”)

Q3):  What is your favorite inspirational quote?

Bianca: “No matter where you go, there you are.”

Q4):  What are you currently reading for pleasure?

Bianca: I absolutely LOVE Elizabeth Moon’s space opera series. It’s not overly romantic, but I love the way she writes space military with such authority. I re-read those books every once in a while. For romance, I’m a big fan of Viola Grace’s erotic SF short stories, Angela Knight’s Warlords and my old guilty pleasures, the Rachel Lee Conard County series.

Q5):  What’s your favorite movie?

Bianca: Batteries Not Included

Q6):  What is a typical writing day like for Bianca D’Arc?

Bianca: I’m not sure I have a typical day. I don’t lead a very structured life at the moment, but I try to write in the morning after checking email. If I manage that, I run errands in the afternoon, play facebook games and work on email again later in the day, then try to do a bit more writing in the early evening. If the story won’t let me go and I’m on a roll, I can write for hours and hours at a time, but this only happens about once every couple of months, depending on my mood and inspiration.

Q7):  What are the best and hardest parts of writing for you?

Bianca: The best is the freedom to do what I want when I want to do it. Not having to adhere to a rigorous schedule the way I did when I worked “for the man” is heaven to me and something I worked hard to achieve. The hard part is the other side of that same coin – not having a set schedule can make it difficult to get things done sometimes. I still need to find a balance.

Q8):  Can you walk us through what it was like trying to get your 1st book published?

Bianca: My first book was MAIDEN FLIGHT. It was the first time I’d ever thought of writing dragons and the book came together in a matter of a few weeks. I heard about this new startup publisher called Samhain and liked the name. I also liked the fact that Lora Leigh (one of my favorites!) was going to be a debut author for them. I submitted the book and got an offer about a week later, which is sort of unheard of in this business. I was lucky. I submitted before they’d even opened their doors and that book was one of the first few they released way back in 2006. Really, on my part, it was just dumb luck because I knew so little about the publishing industry back then. I continue to write for Samhain, but branching out to other publishers has been both a good experience and a much tougher one—to make the leap from small press to the big, mainstream NY publishers continues to be a challenge.
Q9):  “Dead Alert” is the last book in the GUARDIANS OF THE DARK series, right?  How did it feel penning that last line and knowing that particular series was coming to fruition?

Bianca: It was very freeing, actually. I liked the world I created but the zombies really NEEDED to die! LOL.

Q10):  You’ve made a lot of us happy by announcing that there will be another book in the RESONANCE MATES – “Harry’s Sacrifice”, as well as another TALES OF THE WERE – Matt Redstone’s story, and we certainly couldn’t forget the joy in hearing that there would be another DRAGON KNIGHTS installment!  Do you know in what order you might be attacking these so we know what to get excited for first?

Bianca: I’ve been working on-and-off on Harry’s book all summer, in between other projects. I think that book will be finished before the others. We’re in talks about re-issuing the dragon books with new covers next year, and in the case of the first two stories, putting out expanded editions. If we do that, the new dragon book will follow soon after or along with the re-releases. Before that, I have a new werewolf book called WOLF HILLS, coming out early next year, so Matt’s story will probably be the last of the three you asked about.

The new paranormal is the last of the BROTHERHOOD OF BLOOD mini-series that focuses on each of five women who became friends in college. Sally is the last of the college friends and she is paired off with Jason Moore, an Alpha werewolf we first meet in BROTHERHOOD OF BLOOD: PHANTOM DESIRES. Sally is unique among the college friends in that she ends up with a werewolf. The other four girls got vampires. J

For now, the schedule looks like this: HIDDEN TALENT (an erotic SF ménage) releases in October. WOLF HILLS will be out early next year. The dragon re-releases might be next, or if I finish HARRY’S SACRIFICE before that gets finalized, his book might come next. Either way, I hope to have both Harry’s book and a new dragon book in the works for next year. Matt Redstone will have to come after that. (Sorry to all the Matt fans out there! I get asked about him a lot. LOL) This is all tentative. Things tend to change rather quickly in this business. Check my website for the most up-to-date information, or people can always chat with me on facebook. I’m happy to answer questions and talk books! J

Q11):  What about “Hidden Talent”?  Can you tell us a little bit more about that upcoming release through Samhain?  Is it part of an existing series?

Bianca: HIDDEN TALENT is actually the first in a new, erotic sci fi trilogy. The other two titles are TALENT FOR TROUBLE (Darak’s story) and SHY TALENT (Agnor’s tale). I hesitated to start a new series with Samhain, but my editor got the final vote. She wanted it, so it’ll be starting in late October.

HIDDEN TALENT is set in a world where some people have acknowledged psychic Talents. Depending on what part of the galaxy you live in, you’re either part of the ruling class or enslaved by others who would use your Talent for their own purposes. The heroine, Jeri, is a refugee from one of the latter kinds of worlds and the hero is a powerful spymaster and Council member who helps her learn about her Talent. He takes her aboard his starship, the Circe, and teaches her the ways of those with Talent, which includes a lot of naughtiness, of course, (wink, wink) because the fastest and most fun way to recharge after expending a lot of psi energy is through pleasure. They don’t expect to fall in love, but theirs is one of the rare life bonds. They battle a collective that would enslave all those with Talent and in the process discover that Jeri’s long lost sister leads the enemy armada. There’s a battle and a reckoning but you’ll have to read the book to find out how it ends. J

Q12):  With your numerous books and series, do you have a personal favorite (series or book)?  Why do you think it is your favorite?

Bianca: The dragons are very close to my heart and my favorite character is Tor, the baby ice dragon. Why? Because he’s just too darn cute for words!

Q13):  We’ve had numerous requests from more than 1 of your diehard fans, so we have to ask… Can you give us ANY information about the next Dragon Knights book?
Bianca: Hmm. Well, I’ve already started the first scene or two of Prince Wil’s book, but I’m not 100% certain that will be the “next” book in the series. I mostly wrote a bit of Wil’s book so that I wouldn’t forget plot points I wanted to tie up in his story. I see his book as being the last in the Draconia series that will probably bring the war to an end, and I might have one or two other stories to tell before I end the war. I need to think about it a lot more, decide how long I want to drag the war on for, and how many of the princes I want to pair off before Wil. I also introduced snowcats in the last book, so I might want to do something with them for a bit before I have the big, final battle. Wish I could tell you more, but I really haven’t decided which way to go yet. I can say this… there are more dragons on the other side of the world and I might bring some snow dragons into the series before all is said and done. J
Q14):  You’ve captivated us with your aliens, dragons, weres, your vampires, and so much more.  Do you think we can persuade you to give us any hints into where your imagination might take us next?

Bianca: All over the place! LOL! Seriously, I just want to get through adding a new book to each of my ongoing series over the next year or so. I might end some series. I also might expand some. I’m playing catch-up after a year and a half of not writing after my Mom got sick and eventually died. When she got sick, I had a lot of books in the pipeline for publication, so I was able to coast for a while, not writing and devoting all my time to her. Now, I’ve run out of that backlog and I’m feeling pressure to get new stuff written and out. It’s hard to do while still grieving for her. She was really the center of my little world and my best friend in the universe. I can’t even describe how profoundly losing her has affected me. I’m only just starting to come out of the funk I’ve been in since she passed and I still have days—weeks, even—where I don’t want to do anything, much less write. So if you all will continue to bear with me, I’ll get caught up on all my series and fill in a lot of the blanks I never intended to leave open this long.
Q15):    Where did you get the idea of the crystal resonance tests for the mates in THE RESONANCE MATES series?

Bianca: I’ve always had an interest in gemstones and crystals. I used to be a member of the local gemological society and I worked at the big Renaissance Faire upstate, selling crystal jewelry when I was a kid. I learned a lot about crystals from a New Age perspective, but I also took a course in crystalography when I got my chemistry degree. So I look at it from both a scientific and artistic point of view. Or try to. That said, the resonance tests were pulled out of the thin air of my imagination. LOL!

Q16):  Was there any specific inspiration behind the GUARDIANS OF THE DARK series?

Bianca: Brutal honesty time here. The editor offered me a contract but said “it has to have zombies.” That really threw me for a loop at first, but I figured I could go one of two ways: voodoo zombies or science experiment zombies. With my science background, I opted for the latter. And who better to do the experiment than the military? Especially since I have first-hand knowledge of Special Forces guys in my family. So I went that route. But honestly, if the editor hadn’t wanted zombies, they would not have been my first choice.

That said, I’m actually very proud of the series, that has now come to an end with the release of DEAD ALERT. This series was my first “NY” published series and will also be my first mass market sized paperback release next month, when THE BEAST WITHIN comes out again (it’s already out in trade paperback size and ebook).

Q17):  We noticed that there are 2 more books already slated as follow-ups for “Cat’s Cradle” in the STRING OF FATE series.  For those of us that haven’t checked it out yet, can you give us a bit more information about the series and what’s coming?
Bianca: CAT’S CRADLE and the STRING OF FATE trilogy is a sort of sub-set or mini-series in my TALES OF THE WERE. They’re all set in basically the same, modern world, but in different parts of the country, among different parts of shifter society. The STRING OF FATE books all focus on big cat shifters. CAT’S CRADLE explores the Pantera Noir, literally black panthers, and how they protect their queen, the Pantera Nyx. The hero is a panther shifter and the heroine is an unlikely human woman who has a housecat named Chuck Norris. LOL. She is friends with a shifter, though she doesn’t realize it. Her best friend is a doctor who is also a Tigre Blanche—a rare white tiger shifter—in hiding. When everything starts happening, her cover is blown and she agrees to take the panther shifter’s partner, a Tigre d’Or (golden tiger) shifter who’s been gravely injured, to safety. Book 2, KING’S THRONE, is the Tigres’ story. And Book 3, JACOB’S LADDER, will bring us full circle, back to the Pantera Nyx. All the titles are names of string games. I figured cats love balls of string and fate is often depicted as a string… hence the titles for everything.

Q18):  We’ve told you that your books have been great for many a relationship… ;-)  What we want to know is how you can WRITE scenes like that and keep your cool? *wink*

Bianca: Hmm… well, when you’re writing—at least when I’m writing—it’s sort of like I’m simply documenting a movie I see in my mind. I often leave love scenes blank until I’m in “the mood” (don’t read too much into that) to write them. It’s just that you have to be in a certain frame of mind to get them right. Especially when you’re writing erotic stuff, it’s all too easy to dash off a love scene, then go back and read it later and discover it’s really tawdry. I try to avoid that. I want my love scenes—even the really erotic ones—to be sort of soft-focus and romantic. I want there to be a feeling of love in them, not just getting off, if that makes any sense. So they have to be carefully crafted. The amount of thought and work that goes into them sort of precludes me losing my “cool” as you put it. LOL! Good question!

Q19):  This is a staple question for us.  What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview but have never been asked, and how would you answer that question?

Bianca: Oh, man. That’s actually a hard question. Um… *crickets chirping* Can I get back to you on that?

Q20):  Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers while we have you with us today?

Bianca: I just want to thank everybody for giving me the space I needed while I’ve been grieving. The support from readers is really overwhelming and I can’t thank you all enough. I’m starting to get back on track again now and I love that many of you have stuck by me, willing to wait for me to regain a bit of control over my life. You guys ROCK! J

The only one I've read is "Half Past Dead" because it has Paul Marron on the cover as Simon. I like the "Science Experiment Gone Wrong" zombies better than voodoo ones.
